Shitefest 2013 including Autoshite OVROAD Mongfest 13-15 September

I shan't be joining you lot... as well equipped as my 109" is, what with it's tyres/heritage/unburstable drivetrain*, I just don't see the point of trundling around "en masse" chewing up unsurfaced roads. I know what my motors are capable of, I just don't see the need to "wave it about" like this. Soz etc. If I need to get somewhere that entails using a green lane/BOAT, then I use it, if I have no need to use it, I don't. Also, see under "fuel cost".

Have you something else more sensible* then, like an old Sierra or summert? I'm sure not all attendees will be in 4x4s, and those without may wish to stay on the field and talk bollocks all day...

See my comment above re: "Fuel Cost" I run chod because I have little money. It's not a hobby, it's a way of life.

I have little money, but this will count as this year's holiday. Driving that far in the Disco is not going to be a cheap experience. Maybe I should bring the 2CV - that'd handle most greenlane sections! (anything but steep climbs on loose surfaces it tends to cope with).

I'm not sure that I'll be able to make this, I'm not really into all this 4x4 malarkey and it's a long way to come in a 40 year old car plus the fuel costs will be to high to justify it.

Posted

Yes!  I shall be in firm attendance. Toothpaste in pocket.  Malham's a great place in general, and would be great to see some old and new faces...

Dates let's go!

Come on Trigster (and MrsTrig), it wouldn't be the same without you. You too B668, come and take your pick of wheels for the 405.

Posted

Trigger, 4x4s withstanding, it's a decent excuse to stand around in a field in the last of the warm weather/pissing rain, with some people and some 'pop'.   Besides, I wanna have a sniff at yr new wheels...

I'll have to have a think, I want to go but it's a 500 mile round trip for me, a doddle in my Focus but in a 40 year old Cortina or Civic it will be a killer for me and the car, the Alto would be even worse!

Posted

I'm very much up for this, but I might be in New Hampshire the weekend it's held...

Posted

500 miles a killer for a Cortina? They were rep-mobiles in their day! I'll concede that the Alto probably isn't the best choice for such a trip though. I haven't even looked at the mileage, but it's probably 500 miles for me too. I'd best get the Disco's oil leak sorted...

Posted

I was just saying something along the lines of Cortinas being designed for that sort of thing when Dollywobbler beat me to it. It'll do the car good to get a good blast. I agree with you on the fuel cost though, it'll be something like £100.

I'm thinking of attending in my modern shite C5, or possibly hitching a lift with one of the other Scottish shiters. It's looking like 500 miles for me too.

Posted

Of which, it would be great if someone could give Rab (Fotorabia) a lift down. Has anyone been in touch with him recently? He's gone a bit quiet...

Aye but they weren't 40 years old then, plus the seats on a long journey give my bad back a lot of jip, we'll see!

Fair comment - nowt like a proper adventure drive though. I was amazed the shabby BX estate made it to Wiltshire last year!

Posted

Malham's about a 370 mile round trip for me, down from the *cough* 840 mile */cough* Wilts epic last year. That at 26mpg in the Volvo sounds like a perfectly reasonable camping holiday. If Rab can be found I'm sure transport could be arranged.

I'd love to come to shitefest, but I'm on holiday with the fair Mrs. barefoot down in the English River Area the first couple of weeks of September and I don't have a 4X4 so I'm a little bit stuffed on this.

Posted

Hmmm. I'd hate people to think they can only come if they own a 4x4. Sounds more like a nice Shitefest type gathering with a small section of greenlaning for those who fancy it - it isn't compulsory.

Posted

Subject to being available, I'd like to come, and I have no intention of ever having a 4×4.  Is there a date set yet?

That's what I thought as well, general gathering/shitefest first, with a bit of greenlaning for those who are that way inclined.

Is there a local motor museum or something of shite-interest for those who don't fancy the greenlaning? .... or is it off to the pub and drive home a day later?

We need Joe to check with Malham to see when the field is available - I imagine it'll be 6-8 or 13-15 September, but this isn't fixed yet.

There isn't a local motor museum, but there is some excellent country roads in the area - Joe and I discussed setting up a 'treasure hunt' circuit for people that don't want to do the laning.

Alternatively, people can walk up to have a look at Malham Cove, a limestone formation about 1 km from the village (with nails-hard climbing in the centre and a range of easier routes on the two wings for any rock climbers amongst you):

There's a limestome pavement up on top which featured in Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows:

Alternatively, back in the village there are two good pubs and (hopefully) a field full of chod to inspect.

All that part of Yorkshire is very pretty, I went to Malham Cove in 2011 and it was lovely, Malham itself is a pretty little village with a couple of nice drinking outlets and a river.

I think I'm in Cornwall in the beginning of September though.

PLEASE not the 6th-8th i desperatly want to go ad last year was one of the best weekends of the year but i will be at a Polish wedding (in Poland) that weekend and so will be far to drunk to drive from Gdansk to Malham. I may even bring back an FSO if you're lucky.

Posted

Right, let's provisionally aim to make this 13th - 15th September then, eh?

I haven't heard back from the Malhamdale Committee that any particular weekend is off limits, and I don't imagine a problem.

Of course there will be folk who can't make it because of this or that whichever date we choose; we'll just have to live with that.

Breadvan - perhaps another change of title please..?

Arse, That's the day I come back from Cornwall so I can't make it, I'm out.

Me too.

I'll try and make this depending if the funds are there, the Sierra keeps plodding on reliably so I'll probably come in that.  I like doing long trips to car-related events so am more that happy to escape London for a weekend.
