I used to get a ride to school in a MK3 Escort 1100, total povo spec trim, I dont even think it had any trim designation at all.

Cool I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for that brown Taunus, since it was spotted in the town I now live in (again). I've seen those ones that look like MkV Cortina / MkI Orion hybrids in Turkey & also saw one here in Bognor too a few years ago! I just took it at the time that all MkV Cortina equivalent Taunus' looked like that.

I saw a base Mk3 Escort for sale a few years ago. It didn't even have carpets. I can't remember if it had cloth seats or not.

A mate's mum had a white 2-door UVW 392W which was a 1.3 base model but it wasn't too grim inside though I think it was vinyl. It had upgrades like a boot spoiler, Ghia wheeltrims and the later badging on the boot IIRC. She always kept it in mint condition. Had a Mk2 1100 Popular before that.

Reputedly the heads off them were good to stick on the bigger capacity Pinto lumps, and therefore banned in stock car racing.

I am sure the few banger boys who frequent here will know more than me, but I think it was (also?) down to the fact that the chambers were so small/lots of metal in there that they were a lot better starting point for shaping/flowing for the air/fuel mixture.

Indeed, I think most of these were snapped up by Dave Walker of CCC fame for that very purpose.
