Dispatched!

In my latest tale of old shite, I bring you a piss green van, one that needs a clutch and a cambelt amongst other things...

Here it is on the lift ready to go:

After a couple of lunchtimes this is the progress:

And then, as another good idea, I bought this Scud-o:

Niiiice!

Now the Dispatch looks a lot like this, only the engine is sat on an old tyre ready to be pulled out...

Anyone got one of these they want parts for?

are the door mirrors any good (ie do they still adjust from inside)

And condition of gear lever cover (mine is goosed, as is the one in that white van)

Would like a set of synergie, 806, Ulysse seats for mine too.

I think we're all familiar with that method of maintenance

10 start taking it apart

20 watch it all go wrong

30 buy something else that's not necessarily better - just differently fucked

40 goto 10

To add insult to injury, the lift crept down last night and broke the driver's side engine mount rubber... FUCKSTICKS!

I've removed the front cross member today and dropped the engine and box onto a trolley, it'll be out tomorrow for a clean and some new bits.

In other news, I can't seem to make one of the local "gorreny scrap mates" understand that if I want £40 for something, no amount of him hassling me on facebook is going to make me relent and let him have it for £30.

Well this happened today;

It's got a new cambelt and waterpump on, and tomorrow will see the newly cleaned belt covers on and the gearbox off.

I thougt those post lifts have a safety mech built in against that kind of thing happening?

More progress then?

The engine is now back together and back in the van, along with some replacement gear selector cables from the scrap van. Only it being a 1.8 DW8 they are too short... fucksocks!

Another hour lost on fitting and then removing them, before trying to decide what to do. Well I came up with a proper autoshite solution. Several months ago we did a major overhaul on a Dispatch Hdi, including replacing the selector cables, so after a 10 minute wade through the scrap skip, I found the old damaged cables.

I cut the housing on the skip find cables and hammered the bush out, then cut the bush lining in my van's cables before squishing the new/old bush into them making one good set.

Saving for this job? £120+vat !

More updates as they come, I can tell you are all riveted!

Autoshite solutions FTW :D

After my weekend BX adventures I'm glad that I rarely throw stuff out

Best of luck getting the rest of it back together in a similar fashion

TBH these threads and the tat collections are the most ineresting to me, keep it coming m8!

A few years ago I broke a gear selector rod trying to disconnect it from the gear box on our 806. I couldn't believe the price for a replacement.

These days I don't even attempt to disconnect those ball joints. Instead I unbolt the selector block from the top of the gearbox and leave it in the car. This works okay on a HDI.

Changing a clutch on a 806 HDI takes two working days and earned me respect even from people in the trade.

No it was always XUD, the breaker I have is a DW8 though unfortunately.

This weekend I went off to a local chap who was breaking another of these vans (one I was going to buy myself before the ad disappeared!). I liberated the RH driveshaft, which feels like the outer joint is knackered, but mine has a knackered inner joint, so I imagine I can make one from two...

This is the van I vandalised: $T2eC16JHJHwE9n8igtftBRdT+CKBJ!~~60_12.JPG

To show for it, I have a driveshaft still stuck to the hub, a 3rd headrest and a lump on my head from bashing it on the caravan hitch that was just in front of this van...

Posted

Well today I mostly finished off refitting the gear cables, and then got to dissecting the new driveshaft...

When I removed it, the outer joint looked a little odd, and it turns out that at some point the outer circlip had been removed and lost. This meant that once the hub was free from the van, the only thing holding the shaft together was the cv boot!

Well what I now had was 1 shaft with a broken inner joint, and 1 shaft with a worn outer joint... You know I could have bought a new shaft, but this is autoshite, and so I twatted the outer joint off of my original shaft and fitted it to the new one, another saving!

Also when getting the shaft, I managed to snag a nearly new track rod end (I can tell it's nearly new, as A: it came undone and B: the boot isn't split).

Also today I sold the double seat from the spares van, so that's a few quid back in the kitty, which is nice!

I have been putting on a show with the van today, so much so that I completely forgot to get any pictures... Oops! The slam panel is now back on the driveshafts are in and all the wiring is back on, aiming to have it all done for a week tomorrow, fingers crossed!

Reporting in from the coal face, the bumper is now bodged ready to refit, the strut has been nicked off of the spares van and swapped on, and so it looks like a sprint finish for the snotbox, full update at 6!

Ok full fat update time!

This is how the van stands as of this evening, there is still a fair list of jobs to get done, but I'm hoping to have it finished by Friday and on the road by the weekend, as my itching bidding finger appears to have lead to an amount of old shit to collect from Nottingham on Monday... oops!

IMAG1435.jpg

Bodgery bumper, in the past the van has had a brush with something on this side, the wing is poorly aligned and the bumper bracket was hanging off, the easiest solution was to drill through the outer bumper and bolt the bracket back on (it's just melted plastic originally) These rubber topped bolts used to be mounts for the 2l hdi engine found in a lot of Citroens and Peugeots, the bobbin breaks off leaving a 13mm headed m6 bolt, handy for things like this as they don't stick out too much.

IMAG1436.jpg

New strut and franken-shaft fitted; the reason for the strut replacement will become obvious in the next picture, however the original shaft had been damaged by a failing engine mount causing the inner joint to pull apart.

The replacement shaft wasn't much better as in the past, someone had neglected to fit a circlip that holds the outer joint onto the shaft, now I'm not sure if this was the cause, but there was a lot of free play in the inner yoke, so I knocked the end off of the original shaft, rescued the circlip and fitted it to the new one, total cost of this job £10.

IMAG1437.jpg

This is the original strut, broken springs piss me off.

IMAG1438.jpg

Join me for more tomorrow, with highlight including fitting the headlights and where have all these fucking bolts come from?

News in for today,

I've got the leaking rear shock replaced, and the front end is all back together, and mercifully, the list has more items ticked off than unchecked... although I have added a few more to the list today!

IMAG1440.jpg

You have no idea how encouraging this sight is, I actually feel like it might be done by Friday now!

Good stuff.

My mate is on his 2nd, the first clocked up 268k before alternator, turbo then HGF within two weeks sent it over the bridge ...

Posted

Well it runs, it drives and it broke a handbrake cable during the mot, so truer than shite can be in my book.

The brakes are all sorted now, and the tracking has been set (although I need to do it properly to bring the steering wheel back into line)

To do list:

  • Tighten alternator belt
  • Fit bulkhead
  • Fit towbar
  • Front brake service
  • Remove & Reseal gearbox endplate
  • Paint & fit new grille
  • Kidnap Volksangyl and lock him in until he promises to clean it for me

As it goes I won't need it for collecting old shit from Nottingham on Monday so I will take the Xsara instead... that is unless I buy the Xantia estate I've been offered!
