1.2 Renner Clio - NOW WIF PIKTYEARS

Well, here it is - at 1998 Renner Clio in Vert Racing de France. purchased for 100 groats. 1 months ticket and 1 months MOT, new pov spec rear tyres and spare, new rear springs, new timing belt, tensioner and water pump (3000 miles ago) in reasonable nick, not too smelly.

Problems to sort before MOT - fuel filler cover - has rusted from the rear (a well known mud trap) and fallen orf. I have the cover but will need to repair the panel to re fit it as there is a hole. Welding - hmm...awfully close to petrol....preferred fix would be a bodge involving FYBRGLARSE badly slapped on over the rust and the filler remounted with B&Q wood screws in brass to ensure any steel contact results in further rust.

The rear bushes have seen better days and the port side bow is a tad clunky on speed bumps again - suspected bush.

However, great wee car to drive, 1.2 engine is a hoot and a half and the gear box nice and tight, no porridge stirring.

Central locking on blink - the sensors go in the roof but I suspect it just needs re set so will do the battery disconnect thingy when the rain stops.

Pics to follow

Any opinions on these....keeper as a runabout or get shot of pronto?

First of the new shape judging by the fuel filler cap rusting off? They all do that.

For scrap money it'll be great for using and abusing. That engine is pretty much rock solid with only the odd head gasket failure ruining its reputation. Sunroof, if it has one, WILL leak, which isn't very nice. Electrical gremlins will have been ironed out on them by now, although the immobiliser may play up.

I know a guy who has delivered Chinese in his 3 nights a week for the last year, and the car just takes all the abuse it gets thrown at it.

Thanks, thats very helpful

What about the timing belt changes? 1.2 seems to need em every 30k or so.

Head gaskets can be a problem - my mate's went and he had it repaired.

However, the engine had been excessively overheated, so much so that the piston rings were damaged.

As long as it runs ok it should'nt be a problem - if it goes tits up you send it to be converted into toasters.

These things have iffy bonnet catches as well don't they? So either it won't open, or will decide to throw itself at the windscreen when you're doing 60 on a twisty road.

In short, lubricate the bonnet catch well and often.

One of those cars that I want to like but have seen far too many with shagged headgaskets and electrical maladies.

Posted

they usually have 2 litres of water swishing around in the rear foot wells as a non-optional extra.

No timing belt is 60k miles or 5 years, so less of a worry.

Renault are very good about the bonnet catch as well. Bring it to them and they sort it there and then for free no quibbles, it it hasn't been marked up as having been done already.

Will give Renner a call about the bonnet catch spech if they do it for free.

3 cheers for Watchdog and not taking personal responsibility!

I have just written to complain in the stronget terms about Sainsburys family pack loo roll..Whilst wiping up a cheeser this morning, my finger burst through the poor standard arse paper and ended up covered in jobby! I have high hopes of Anne Robinson and her team of jackles descending on Sainsbury's HQ on Holborn and asking some awkward questions!

- forgot to ask R9UKE -

have you come across a post on any of the Renner forums about fixing the fuel filler issue, I had a quick butchers on the web but nothing so far - judging by the spread of the rust looks like it might be best to soda blast off the paint, cut out the rust and weld in new metal.

The true shite solution is to cut it out then pop rivet on the a lump of quarter with the fuel filler on you've cut out a Fiat Bravo you found in ascrap yard.

You might stuggle to find a repair panel for sensible money. If you just want to get it through the test for general using and abusing then I'd clean it up, rust treat it then wang a load of fibreglass filler mix all over i. Job done.

I don't think it is an MOT faliure as the actual fuel filler pipe is air tight, lockable and also very firmly anchored to the body, more of a cosmetic issue.

If you start welding it you'll have to drop the tank (unless you're brave) and it's not exactly a duesenberg. I think a lovely mix of kurust, fibrglass and filler will do the job long enough to see it out.

yes, I'd like to include some newspaper, and the shitters friend - an old baked bean can as well but was also thinking that a nice bit of chicken wire could be a decent solution

so - baked bean can with chicken wire stapled to the front to provide a key for the Fibreglass/Kurust/filler mixture - the whole lot glued in position using epoxy and the back side plastered in position with fibreglass strips and newspaper (including the date for archaeological purposes - I pulled an almost complete front page of the Daily Record dated May 1974 from the rear wing of a mini once.

Perfect for taking brass wood screws.

The sohc16 D4F is a screamer, not arff.

As an exHillman Imper, were it not for the revlimm, I'd have popped a rod by now :)

I love mine [mind you, not too taken with Clios]

Couldn't get on with the driving position in the one I had. The seat seemed too high such that the rear view mirror was in my eye line rather than slightly above it.

it is a car made for short arses indeed - even with seat back it's cramped for missus S and I (both 6ft). I know what you mean about the height of the seat, when I first got in I though the seat was jacked up -

splais why they are usually driven (very badly) by 18 year old wenches with dozens of disgusting soft toys piled on the parcel shelf

mind you at £100 I'm not complaining - costs considerably more than that to feed the Rangerover!

uh oh

Mrs S opened the sunroof!!! :o:shock:

just reported it won't shut -

2 greatest mistakes in life -

1 - never get in volved in a land war in asia

2 - never open a non leaking sunroof on a 1990s French car!

Posted

Better go get some gripfill for a stealth solution, or find some gaffer tape for a quick bodge!

Posted

phew!

it's just a tilt roof and the seal is in reasonable condition - looks new - Missus obviously forgot how to operate them..had the central light off and there is no sign of any water ingress into the car

shame, it would have looked barry with some gaffer tape on the sunroof!

Posted

You could tape it up, then carefully cut the tape so the sunroof still operates! Then you can be barry but have a working sunroof

Posted

Just taken it for a spin. Needs new anti roll bar bushes but after months of iveco, musso and now rangie it is a refreshing change, lively wee thing, nice gear box Mrs s is happy,

Best 100 quid I spent in ages

Shutting yourself in a fridge freezer and getting someone to push you off Beachy Head would be a refreshing change from an Iveco.

Sorry didn't visit this in a while. No, come across nothing about the filler cap rust, but as said, if the tank itself is still airtight then it's fine, apart from looking shit. It's just the door hinge that rots away and not the cap itself thankfully :)

And LOL about the sunroof. Definitely a rule of life. Had a similar mishap with my 406 and it'll never be opened again :)

For £100 drive the absolute fuck out of it, spend NO money on it, and weigh it in for a profit when it goes bang!
