Further to the shite NI numberplate thread, here's the car it's attatched to!

I got this as a source of spares for another Xantia which i'm suppost to be picking up soon, however the seller keeps putting off the collection date and I may run out of time to get it. This isn't such a bad thing as this particular Xantia isn't a bad old bus! It's a 2001 HDi 110 with 122k on the clock. Starts and runs great, new tyres, electric windows all round, electric mirrors and a nice colour! However, the interior stinks of dogs, there's the odd dent and scrape, the drivers headlight is cracked and the drivers front wheel bearing has collapsed. Infact, it's so collapsed that I can hold the wheel and move it about about an inch. Not sure if it's done more damage than just kippering the bearing and the shaft/hub has been damaged too. Are bearings easy to change on these?

Fingers crossed I should be on my way to 50MPG commuting, the road tax is only £130 a year too!

Anyway, what doe's the larger shiting community think of my purchase?

Just take the hub carrier off and swap it for a good scrap one? Last time I had a bearing fitted it cost £10.

Looks quite decent.

Class, that's what I think.

What spares are you bumming it for, he said in a ' wonder if the 2.0HDi engine will fit a 306' kind of way?

Posted

Probably won't be bumming it at all, infact i'll be un-bumming it.

OMG IT'S SHIT SCRAPE IT NOW £100 CASH TONITE

You'll love it. :D

Looks straight enough and the rear spoiler is a nice touch. Hope the suspension was set on high for the pics though as is sitting a bit higher than I would have expected.

Yeah, sorry I was having a play with it! Not sure what use adjustable suspension is but it's good fun.

It's especially good for parking up next to OMGslammedzzz dubmobiles and dropping it even lower than them. Then, when they drive away trying to avoid pebbles on the road and smashing their heads against the ceiling, you can cruise past laughing hysterically.

I've used it the other way as well. We had a water pipe burst on a road near us that was causing quite a flood in a bit of a dip.

Frontera in front of me, would not go through, but I put the suspension on high and gently drove through the water.

Had quite a smug feeling at the time. (Admittedly that was in my old 1.9TD, but the suspension is still the same)

Lowest is really only for depressurising the system to remove sphere's etc. Highest is for when you want to go off road (SLOWLY, as no suspension)

Nice. They did these later Xants in some very lovely colours. Such a change from hideous, bland silver.

As has been said - a new hub carrier is your easiest solution. I imagine it's pretty similar to a BX, which is so simple even I can do it. Or buy a bearing on Ebay for about £12, pull the hub carrier off and give the whole lot to a mechanic equipped with a hydraulic press. A few minutes work and about a tenner should cover it. If the carrier isn't fooked.

Interestingly, these Xantias seem to have a massive following already in Citroen circles - possibly because the C5 that replaced it was so shite. At the X Rally this weekend, there were more Xants than anything else. I may have to own one. In fact a really early 'sinker' is old enough for classic insurance this year...

Lowering the suspension on these, bxs, xms, cxs etc....gr8 way to avoid getting clamped, towing away is difficult as well! never buy a tax disc again! 8)

Is it true that I need a special Citroen tool to get the bottom balljoint off?

Posted

Depends what you mean by off. You can just undo the balljoint and lever it out of the arm to remove the hub if it's like a BX. You ideally need a special tool to replace the balljoint and remove it from the hub, but brute force and a good chisel seems effective judging by my local garage.

Xantia HDi - top shitting there young man. :D

Adjustble suspension are ace for fording small streams & rivers ( the air intake on the 110 is quite low down IIRC) and makes hitching up to big heavy trailers an utter hoot useful also when changing the wheel.

HOWEVER - Xantias are not as reliable as the BX and you will find that you end up taking a BX with you as a spares car wherever you go for when the Xantia's electrics eventually decides to shit the bed.

Can't wait for my XM now! Can you still drive ok with it low or high, or is it a massive no-no that will fuck it up? I like the idea of veedub baiting!

Driving it in low will cause much grief the first pebble you run over, driving it in high will cause your fillings to shake loose. They re maintenance settings really.

You can play traffic light roulette though. Stop at the red light, slam the car, then put it back to normal height and hope it raises up before the traffic light changes colour...

Posted

I slammed mine on the ferry as they started wandering round with chains ready to tie down the trucks. Didn't want them tying it down to find it lower the suspension on the chains.

Traffic light roulette is great. Watching the faces of the people behind as you drop and raise the car six inches.

There is no suspension movement at low or high settings. And it will rupture a sphere eventually if you do do it.

Just worked out that this should be on a 51 plate. Does that qualify it for OMG late reg madness?

Posted

Just thought - with the pikey plate, surely you can blag your way into Northwich? How are they going to tell what year it is?

Posted

They're not are they? Good thinking!

I'll be interested to see how you get on with the modern hdi type stuff, looks like a good buy.

As for Chumley - the gate monkeys are usually too busy trying to point us towards the regular public parking areas and away from the "show" area

There's only one arsehole on the gate at Chumley, right miserable od bastard that he is. I think he told me my BX wasn't a classic car so I just told him to FOAD.
