philibusmo Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 I recently bought this very clean and tidy Orion, which I have absolutely no need for what so ever. After spending about a month considering how I might put it to use, I have finally come to the conclusion that I would be best selling it on and letting someone else use this eminently useful and sensible car. The basics; It has MOT until July 26th 2013. On this date, I can currently see no reason why it won’t pass another. It does not have tax. It has just over 47,000 miles and is wearing them very well. It’s a Ford Orion, the 1.4LX model no less. This means it is blessed with such luxuries as an FM Radio and cassette player with multiple speakers, a roof mounted clock (not working) and two tone paint work. Being a 1.4 it is in the cheaper tax band and should be cheaper to run and insure than its larger engine siblings. No fancy fuel injection here either. It all runs sweat as a nut through a carb with manual choke. It drives very nicely and has four tyres with literally a legal amount of tread on them, although they are not of the best pedigree. The bodywork is overall very clean. There is some rust scabs starting to show through on the passenger side rear arch and a couple of small scabs above the passenger side head lamp and one just under the boot aperture. The interior is very clean and tidy with no rips or sagging in the seats and the carpet looking as deep piled as it ever has. Apart from the aforementioned roof clock and the tailgate rams everything I can think of works and works well. There is no history with this car although it is possible to piece together some parts of its past 25 years. I bought it from a local family who had been using it as a spare car. It was used mostly by the son who drove it the half mile from home to work. Previous to this and for many years it was owned by the great aunty of the family who had kept it serviced and maintained at a local garage. They seem to have done a good job. There is evidence of it having passed though the hands of two local Ford dealers. It has a dealer sticker for Clarks Ford of Cullompton who ceased trading in the mid 90s and a number plate from Old Blundell’s Ford dealership which shut shop in about 2003 having been there for many many moons. It may have been a demonstrator originally as there is a ‘please refrain from smoking’ sticker in the top left of the windscreen. So there we have it, hardly a description of Doctor sized proportions but if you have any questions that I haven’t answered here then please reply to this thread. The price for this excellent motor vehicle is just £600. The car is located in Devon, 10 minutes away from Junction 27 of the M5. Please note; if you ask me what my best price is, or lowest I will go then for you the price will double to £1200 and will not be going back down again.

Lord Sterling Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Wow man, I've kind of always wanted one of these, albeit a Ghia version with pepperpot alloys preferably finished in Diamond White over Grey, but with these being so few and far between, I'd have loved to snap this up. If I didn't have many cars and so little space.......

kinkersaab Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 I like that. Looking at the switchgear I can hear and feel the unbelievably cheap sounding click as the stalks are moved. Not unlike replacing the lid on the lurpak. Glws etc.

Wilko220 Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Looks lovely that. This must have been right at the end of the 'five digit odometer' era, I'd guess. Funny to think now that, not so long ago, folk would buy a new car and think it not unreasonable that it probably wouldn't make it to 100k.

phil_lihp Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 That looks sweet, GLWS etc. With a bit of TLC and a can of waxoyl that'd make a good runabout for a long time yet, there's not many left in that condition now. If my C'eed ends up staying at the bodyshop much longer I'd be seriously tempted, getting very fed up with the electronically gimmicky Disastra loan car Do you find it harder to sell cars in the South West? Both times I've listed a supposedly popular vehicle on eBay I only got one bid and both times the winner was amazed at the bargain they'd got. Maybe it's the shortage of motorways but I do suspect that seeing Devon/Cornwall in a for sale description instantly puts a lot of people off as they automatically assume collection involves an epic journey of intergalactic mileage. At least you're within spitting distance of the M5.

philibusmo Posted March 24, 2013 Author Posted March 24, 2013 I have found multiple times just how bloody difficult it is to sell a car in the southwest. I have found that putting that I am just off the M5 does help things, but it really isn't easy and I usually end up with a for hundred quid less than similar cars elsewhere sell for. This will probably be lobbed on ebay shortly, probably with a classified ad to avoid the last minute bid sniping and not paying fuckwits. I was really hoping it was going to be sunnier so I could get out the polish and get some lovely doctor style shots, but in the drizzle, it really isn't going to make a jot of difference.

dollywobbler Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 That seems very appealing indeed, but I'm also going to have to play the distance/too many cars cards. Can't believe there isn't more interest to be honest. What a lovely runaround.

Burnside Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Fantastic looking Orion would buy it myself if I had the cash etc which i don't. The rear period rubber boot spoiler would sell it to me alone. Had a late MK4 Escort 1.4L 5 dr about 6/7 years ago and was a great motor that I was really sad to part with would like another at some point. Would have thought this would sell quickly at that price given what I've seen them go for elsewhere. GLWTS.

scooters Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 Is it a German or British built one.The German ones had a better rep for build quality, not sure f it was true but definately used to sell them in the past..showing me age. If German you might want to add it to your ad. Cant recall how you check, Nice car btw, I always liked the orion
Shep Shepherd Posted April 1, 2013 Posted April 1, 2013 ^If the car's German-made, its VIN will have "Ford Werke" or similar instead of "Ford Motor Company" printed on it
philibusmo Posted April 1, 2013 Author Posted April 1, 2013 Thanks guys, I'll have a check on that tomorrow after work and pop it in the ad if its a German built one.

Unless someone wants to buy a Yugo and free up room for this?
