Are ancient tyres dangerous even if they look OK?

Nankangs seem to get a pretty good reputation for Chinese tyres. I've been looking into new summer (ha ha haaa) tyres for the BX. Found the new labelling actually quite useful, allowing me to focus on wet weather grip ahead of noise and fuel economy. Haven't actually bought any tyres yet, but it is helping me make up my mind.

Looks like someone's in a rush to see Taiwan annexed by the PRC.

If they hold air pressure, have legal tread levels remaining and are not perished or cracked I'd roll 'em.

Naturally, it would be a good idea to test their grip in dry and wet conditions and make your own judgement.

As mentioned before, it's ultra-violet light that breaks down rubber tyres - if they'd been stored in a dark area they will be fine for decades more than likely.

I always try to buy the unused spare wheels when shopping for used tyres at the scrappies

Tyre labelling & oriental tyres?

Of course those chaps at the PRC wouldn't tell fibs, A++++ ratings when even Michelin and Goodyear can't manage those ratings?

I will let you smart guys decide....

I fitted new tyres to my car recently, the old ones looked fine except some very light signs of cracking.

Once they were off it was obvious they were utterly fucked. Looked fine when fitted.

Choice is yours. They're only the things that stick the car to the road after all.

I am planning to replace the ancient one, together with one of the rears which was made by the famous* Sime Tyres of Malaysia.

And then I'll be left with the problem of mixing all-seasons (because that's what I'm getting) with summers, etc etc.

You might be ok but I found that with winters on the front and normal 'all weather' tyres on the rear the handling could get very interesting and kept you very alert!

Would you use an ancient condom which looked “OK That’s made of rubber too.

^ Certainly not on my wheels...

Something like this?

I've got that problem with the red BX. Winter tyres on the front, summer tyres on the rear. Once it stops being VERY COLD, I'm going to get another pair of summer tyres I think. Then I'll spend the summer trying to find a set of steelies on which to put the two existing winter tyres, and a fresh pair.
