Bikeshite: weird random fuel leak from Fizzy

Once last year my 1977 Yamaha FS1e threw all of its fuel out onto the garage floor. Attempts to find out why led nowhere, and the problem did not recur. This morning I arose at 0400 to find the house infused with petrol vapour. The garage floor was once again coated with petrol that had fallen from the bike. Much mopping, window opening, and cursing later, the bike is now standing over a tray, but no fuel is leaking out. There is still some in the tank.

 

The fuel cock is closed. There is no sign of anything torn, broken, leaky, etc. The bike last went out on the road about three days ago, without incident.

 

I am wondering if this might have something to do with extreme cold, and the movement of some gasket or seal due to temperature, but my garage is integrated in a row of terraced houses and has an insulated door.

 

Me:- baffled.

You might have a seal somewhere that contracts enough when it's really cold to leak......

Perished fuel line or bad seal on the tap are my suggestions. Piss taking aside have you felt round for any damp bits that may indicate the source of the leak?

You'd have to disconnect the fuel line to verify if the tap actually turns off fuel flow as you'd expect it to.

The petrol soaked the wooden box containing some seriously posh wine that I have been storing for later. Wine that is worth more than at least one or two of my cars, and is bound to be more tasteful. Arse. I will bin the box, and rack the bottles, but now my plan to sell the wine for a tidy profit is busted, as unopened cases are the ones that sell. Oh well, I shall have a very merry Christmas circa 2020.

Long shot but from my fizzy owning days, are you sure the fuel tap is off? Seem to recall they were three way, down is on, up one way off, up the other way reserve. If it was on reserve and the float level crept up it would leak?

The seepage issue is definitely from the cock up Pin hole in tank, dodgy cock gasket or runny cock would be my best guess.

Remove cap, apply mouth to orifice (told you) and apply slight pressure. Check for dampness. And fuel leaking.
