'07 Peugeot 307 shitheap - weighbridge awaits, expurts req'd

A mate's sister has this festering shitbox, a 2007 1.6 pez 307 that is about to be weighed for scrap due to an unfixable electrical issue. It starts, it runs but goes into limp wristed mode due to some weird problem that also illuminates the ABS light and causes the brakes randomly come on. The car is undriveable, cannot be MOT'd and they're 3 grand deep in finance. It's had a new BSI board apparently.

Apparently, the finance company won't have it back because it's unroadworthy, they can't sell it with 3 grand owing (it's worth 500 quid as is) so the other option is to weigh it in, get a COD and carry on paying. But, if it can be fixed or at least made driveable, they can hand the sorry spastic back and walk away.

Any ideas? Being a 2007 French car it probably needs a priest or Paul Daniels rather than a mechanic.

Googling the problem seems to throw up a common fault with the ABS sensors, apparently crud builds up and causes all sorts of problems, on off brakes etc.

Maybe worth a look and a clean up before the last resort of weighing it in?

Do you remember back in the bad old days when pubs had signs outside saying "no blacks no irish" well auto eletricians have signs outside their premises that say "No Peugeots".

My mate's Mrs had a 207 that started throwing random electrical hissy fits and every auto electrician he spoke to said "Sorry, don't do Peugeot's mate."

The problem is you can't even stick it on ebay as it'll have outstanding finance on it.

Have they tried yanking the ABS fuse as it's probably the ABS that's causing the brakes to come on?

Dont be tempted to think this is one big problem, could be 5 or 6 smaller problems!

I went to a Citroen specialist once with my XM and he said he didn't work on them - I said 'you're not much of a Citroen specialist then, are you?'

If it starts and runs OK then goes mental when it starts moving that does suggest the ABS sensors are 'setting it off' if you like.

You need a reasonably knowledgeable 'modern peugeot' independent who can plug it in and then translate the torrent of bollocks that the OBD will no doubt start spouting, into some actual real problems which can be fixed.

The 407 does the same - I think the usual problem on that model is the rear abs sensors. If I recall correctly, cracks in the abs rings cause issues so it might be worth taking a look at them anyway. If you can get hold of a peugeot reader (Lexia)(sorry, I sold mine after I sold the car), you could (in theory) reset the lights just before the MOT then hand it back.

That said, if you can get a Lexia on it (take a look at peugeotforums.com, there are people who will charge a lot less than Peugeot and there's a map I think to find your nearest friendly person) then you *might* be able to find out the issue and sort it out.

Good luck!

Almost certainly one of the front abs rings has got rusty and cracked, it causes very odd behavior with the abs system. You can now replace just the ring fairly cheaply.

"Finest in the district..."

"explain, pray, the logic underlying that conclusion"

"it's so clean, Sir....."

"It's certainly uncontaminated my XMs"....

etc. [/montypython]

Don't hastily give up on it, especially with that amount of finance being owed. The bigger problem is the people the car is being taken to - find the right person I can guarantee it'll be a relatively simple fix.... It could even be the bloody battery! When the battery was nearing the end of its life on my Meg II, all sorts of randoms happened - ABS light on and if you put an electric window down, the speedo would drop to zero and the doors unlocked. Car is back to its faultless self after a new battery.

Tried disconnecting the ABS modulator? Under n/s/f bumper iirc. Earlier ones had a recall for water getting into controller which brought up all sorts of odd problems.

Ooo - a cliffhanger 8)

Then what happened?

Did they set a huge dog wearing white moccasins on you?

407 rear ABS sensors were such a common problem a few years ago that for about 2 months there were NONE avaliable in the UK, and none coming from France. We had 2 407's lying round the back of the garage for weeks waiting on new parts coming through. An ABS fault wouldn't apply the brakes though, only ESP would do this- had this issue with the Vito which actually turned out to be the steering angle sensor needing reset.

Okydoky. I think the first port of call is to whip the fuse out for the ABS (which is also the fuse for the power steering*) and see what occurs. I've suggested a gallon of unleaded over the engine and a match thrown underneath. If this is what modern cars are about, you can keep them. Utter shite.

Cheers for suggestions so far though!

*Yes, you read that right. The power steering has a fuse. F.....F......S

No, the first port of call is to check both the front ABS rings, don't start pulling fuses out!The electrics on modern French cars can be upset merely by farting in their general direction, so don't give them any other excuse to go tits up!

Did the cunt who used to design the electrics for Lancias and Alfas move to France in the 90s/00s, or something?

I thought he moved to Bosch....

I was watching a program about the new aeroplane, the huge Airbus one.... There was an issue during the design and build of the thing in where some of the wiring was German, and some was French. When they laid in the harnesses, none of the connectors would mate up. I fair near pissed myself :D
