when a car has no MOT do they say : -"It shold have no problems passing an MOT because it starts first time"well there's a few other factors to an mot that actually being able to start the sodding engine

...and if it'll have no problems passing an MOT, why not put one on it?

Because folk are shit-thick? It's always pretty LOL-worthy, when the snotter in question is really fit for the crusher.

Because people are tighter than a gnats tw@ and know that it wont pass for whatever reason, be it a blown bulb or big fook of hole in the rear subframe that is conveniently hidden by the rear wheels.

Not always the case m'luds. I very rarely MOT stuff that I take in and sell on and if you speak to various members of Retro-Rides, the BXC plus a few Vauxhall forums you'd know I've sold loads that have tested with little or nothing. In fact I think the green 106 I sold recently to LankyTim's mate went straight through a test after he'd fettled the exhaust where the fast fit centre had bodged it.Some people really don't have the time, money or inclination to test stuff and as long as it's priced accordingly it doesn't matter in my book. If people are thick enough to bid on eBay without viewing first then it's their fault if they buy a lemon, and that's the same for a thirty grand nearly new car right down to a 'should pass MOT because it runs well' £56 snotter.

It's the supposition that's most irritating, coupled with the belief on the part of the seller that because they say it might pass, it's worth the same as one with a years ticket. I try and get everything done and roadworthy where possible - where I cannot be arsed, I'll list what needs doing so the buyer is under no illusion. Sometimes it can be true, my 325i needed naff all work for the MoT (should pass easily said the seller).... shame they didn't disclose that the water pump was kippered, and that there was no fluids in it. Or the accelerator was missing. It passed easily, then threw me into a world of pain. Bastards.

I think I'd be much happier buying something that has listed faults and "stacks up" with a short ticket, than something that appears inherently ropey/too good to be true but has a very suspicious 12 months MOT on it. There are still a number of, shall we say, "lenient" testers out there, as my 405 saloon will testify to - it got a ticket at a faraway MOT station with no advisories at all last year, and was subsequently found to have no handbrake or rear brakes to speak of  Even with all the rectification work and more done for this year's test, I still got 6 advisories, at least half of which (windscreen, oil leak, brake pipes) should have been picked up 12 months ago...My local MOT tester is of the Moscow police school - firm but fair - and since he's been in operation (18 months) has only had two cars through that have had no advisories at all, one of which was my mum's Honda Logo which has done so few miles in 8 years it might as well have just rolled out of the showroom anyway.

True there are bent testers out there.... but I don't know any / use any. I have my regular guy who has too much to lose from non-legit tickets now his business is expanding rapidly, also I use a more 'backstreet' place occasionally, merely because it's very close. Occasionally I will use the services of legendary skoda man "Dave Rapid", especially for something very odd/obscure as other places get confused by how wierdy things work (e.g. getting flummoxed by a starting handle) :)

"Just needs new battery/starter motor to be a runner"Then you replace the starter motor only to find the head gasket's shot to bits or the timing belt's snapped."Just needs VIC check before it can go back on the road".Or my all time favourite on ads for salvage cars - "Was in mint condition before accident". Pity it's a Cat A write-off now...

One of my favourites in a similar vein is "But how can the clutch go, it`s just passed it`s MOT hasn`t it?"

only done 50 miles since last MOT in 2005 so should pass fine (but been parked in a field for 3 years)

Ah, you see I had it the other way round, my "should pass its MOT and wont need any welding" eGay special introduced me to a world of pain before passing its test and pretty much stopped me bidding anything above scrap value for anything without an MOT, Sorry Cav this is where we will have to differ - if its not got an MOT its worth scrap value - end of.

Will easily pass its next MOT with no welding required

Hey Ted, scrap value is scrap value and most people think like you do. Scrap value is all most are prepared to bid usually but I find if you're totally honest and list ALL known faults then a home for a fair price will be found.Scrap value is actually a very good point because so many cars get binned because sellers assume no-one will want to buy their old motor. This means less old motors on the market and less chance of a bargain for the financially challenged or bargain hunter. That's whay honestly described MOT-less cars can be a bloody good buy for the sensible and thrifty.Mr B should back that up: I think the last two cars he had off me cost less than a hundred the pair and I believe they both went through an MOT with little or nothing. It is a gamble buying something without test and you have to value it at what you can see it if it turns out to be a lemon. That scrap price you mentioned is your top whack, others might see it different but probably most would agree with you.

But thats the nub, people being honest - more and more ebay sellers are not, or are over economical with the truth (see seppr't rant over on BXC re Egay and Paypal).

Right enough mucker, right enough. It's one thing trusting a regular user/member of a forum you might use but another altogether when it's someone on eBay.I still maintain it's all relevant though: if something is cheap enough then to a large extent it doesn't always have to be as described on eBay. Forums are slightly different because no-one should ever be dishonest enough to turn a fellow car club member over.

prime examplewent to see an Audi Estate last night, no MOT of TAX up for £350Seemed OK usual dings and rattles so I went straight in at £200"Can't do it for that little" was the reply"but with no mot I really don't know the condition, it may fail and cost a fortune" I said"Oh she runs lovely, she'd fly through an MOT and lets face it, if I put an MOT on it I'd get £900 easily for it mate"The thought that ran through my head was - get off your fat lazy arse, take it for a MOT and get more than double than you have it advertised for them numbnuts especially if she runs lovely, we all know thats a guaranteed MOT pass as it's top on the tick sheet you retarded braindead fuckwit. But graciously I left my thoughts in my head and wandered away....

Or even better, retort with "So £900, minus the test, minus your asking price, means it needs £500 worth of work for your figures to be correct, yes?"

I'll still defend some people who sell cars with short or no MOT and to be fair (to an extent) he's right ayd. I don't know what model or year or anything of course and his asking price with no test seems expensive but it will be worth a few quid more with a full test.People ask me if I'll take anything I'm selling for an MOT (probably hoping they'll catch me out) and I'll always agree to as long as they pay for the MOT and invite them to come with me.I've very recently taken my Astra TD for an MOT and it failed on very little indeed, but I was going to sell it without one and would have got far less for it.

My son works in the local garage and the chap who m.o.ts my cars makes a point of failing mine, allways on something silly. If he had his way he would fail mine on odd valve caps. at the end of the day I think its just what mood hes in on the day
