Banger Racing. Not the stolen to race thread.

Makes you wonder if a similar conversation was had over a plate of Dodo and chips.... and then someone said "Bugger, we've run out!"

I'm a banger fan and have great memories of watching it on World Of Sport on a Saturday afternoon, I find it quite nostalgic to watch Pre '68 stuff go around the oval.

It does seem like double standards to be against banger racing because it destroys allegedly rare classics yet the same people who are the harshest critics are also the people who happily tear apart a car in the scrapyard taking bits they don't actually need "just in case".

Anyway, I'm off to get fisted by Keith Chegwin...

Kaikohe Demolition

This is an obligatory watch for anybody who hates or likes banger racing...its sweet and funny...set in New Zealand in one of the most deprived parts of the country..and yes..they do demolish the odd classic...but uneconomical one.

Just found this on my spots thread and though I'd post it up being as it's quite apt given the fate of these 3 cars, this was in 2002 when scrapyards were full of them:

I have some camcorder footage somewhere, but that only has the silver one "after". The yard owners used to banger race in that field every now and again.

^^ Mk3's are too soft.

There's a tidy H plate one around the corner from work. If it's not dark I will grab a pic on the way home tonight.

I dislike 'classic' banger racing intensely. If it's strong enough to oval, it's strong enough to be repaired and used on the road. The sad thing about seeing 50's and 60's car bangered now is that these cars were old bangers when I was a nipper. They've survived the original banger/scrapyard cull, lasted 40-50 years only for some rigger booted moron (RBM) smash it up for fun.

If it's an A60 that's been rotting in a scrapyard for 15 years then there is a case for it. However, when the RBM's start smashing up rare stuff like Mercedes 600's and pre war Yanks, that takes it to a whole new level.

At the end of the day, there's no need for it. There are more than enough shagged Mondeos and XJ40's etc to destroy.

you sir are a top class knob jockey.who are you to judge me?i mainly race old stuff, more if i could find it,they are mainly rotten and non running .they come from people like you with no skills except for working a computer keyboard.i spend weeks/months welding spraying a wreck to smash up ,not so people like you can tell me its too good to race ,but to make it safe and because i can.

You should try breathing through your nose mate. :D

Funny as!

IMHO I reckon that this should be the last word on this thread. Everything that can be said has been said.

Time for this to die a peaceful but still dignified death eh?

I'm waiting for RBM to come back, showering me with spittle and raw horse meat in a suitable hi-viz rigger booted riposte.

:D

Anyone with rigger boots and a hi viz will always try to have the last word... Lol

It will be badly spelled also. Let em have the last word. They are mongs and we aren't.

Our victory is silence. They make fools of themselves.

We win!

Why is everyone slagging off riggers and hi-viz jackets? I was a racer and still have a good amount of racer friends, all with riggers, hi viz jackets, covered in grease and unshaven. All top blokes though, if I ever need any parts I often get given them for free or for "a drink". My recently sold Volvo 240 was saved from the scrapyard using donated ex-banger parts.

It seems to be that the most opinionated on this thread (and elsewhere) have next to no idea on what banger racing is all about or those who take part in the sport.

Bob, hope my response satisfies the reaction that you’re clearly trying to provoke.. I think you must be quite new or have a selective memory because on previous threads on the subject, neither side have covered themselves in glory. Comments like ‘Burn their kids’ is bound to get a reaction from those of us who wouldn’t understand that it is terribly witty hyperbole.

Your obvious prejudices and use of stereotypes will probably prevent you from accepting that people can be interested in the many varied aspects of shite but it does happens You have many ex racers on here who appear to generally try and keep out of it but some of the silliness does need to be challenged.

I look forward to the grammar and spelling critique and the always hilarious EFAs

Banger racing is a pretty good night out, if you dont like it buy all the cars that come up for sale before the lads that race do simples

i bought a car from right under the racers nose to save it, i then listed it for sale in a few places and it eventually sold for just under half of what i paid for it, oh and a couple of months after i sold it dvla had no record of it so wonder what happened to it, mabe i just delayed its death.

Im 100% sure one of the fso owners on here bought it from mr grumpys yard a well known banger racer who sells rare old cars all the time

the guys are not all bad so dont tar them all with the same brush.

Rotten now thats a nice way of putting it

I would have to think twice about puting my safety at risk racing some of his stock round the track without a weldathon to shame even the the most dedicated classic car fan.

But it's not that simple is it? How long does a car hang around in a racer's yard before being raced? Weeks? Couple of months?

How long do you have to consider storage and financial outlay for a full restoration? A year? Two? Five?

As I said before, I'm not griping about stuff that's too far gone or ten a penny, but rare cars that are restorable but raced because someone could just jump in a lorry that day and store it for a short while for race prep and not have to think about parts availability or long term storage and facilities or the cost of a decent respray.

I would safely say that no one would take on any of the cars in above mentioned yard as they are pretty mullered, even if someone did i would bet when they realised how much work was required it would be left to rot or weighed in.

you dont need to tell me about storage costs as ive just rented yet another shed for the old landie to dry out, this classic car malarky isnt cheap as you will know yourself, all we can do is save the ones we can and dont fret about whats out of our hands  lifes just to damn short

NO... Destroyed by the unthinking workshop owners, who, instead of calling a Classic Specialist and waiting just a little longer, saw easy quick money. Lots of people couldn't give a rat's ass about any car, let alone an old child killing one. The rear culprits are people who see a flash of cash and respond with a slack jawed "Yes" instead of "Bugger off, it's not for sale". For a vast proportion of the populace, an old car is just rubbish and needs to be thrown away.

Much as I couldn't give a shit about clothing. I wear things that fit and have pockets, etc, and I get told that I have had these clothes for longer than I have known my Wife. Apparently I should have thrown them away by now... if they're serviceable, they stay. I'm one of those hoarders. I have turned down serious cash offers for my Sapphire, and it is heavily blocked in on my drive, well away from the road. Yes, they are soft, but for "Junior" or "Non-Contact" events, it is ok.

WE are in the minority. Stop crying about it, and act immediately that you hear about old cars available. Don't hesitate and wonder about the "What ifs" when you miss out on a bargain. You may have no storage, might have a Wife that hates it, but if YOU are determined to prevent it reaching the jaws of the Hiab, then you have to act. If you can't because of other financial and family commitments, let it go, then can it, as it's beyond your power.

I'm fed up of this bickering. The people that can and DO act, do so because they have more money and space than us, more free time, and less nagging Wives. Lucky them! I may not approve of it, but I cannot slate the people personally, as I do not know them. Everyone on this planet is an individual, they cannot all think like us.

well said Albert. I dont get the attraction of destroying something rare. Aside from that, much of what they destroy is panels and body parts. I have broken 3 vans that could have seen the track or the road with about the same big effort. They could have had em after I was finished but I doubt you can race a floor pan with much of the chassis missing! THAT is what I have against banger racing. The sheer waste. Even middle aged stuff that goes that way could keep other cars on the road.

[LifeofBrianmode] I'M NOT! [LifeofBrianmode]

SRSLY, Albert speaks the truth. I'd love a '49 Mercury leadsled, or a flathead powered '32 Ford. Ain't gonna happen as I don't have the money/skill/facilities. Some people do, so should I go into full 'Kevin the teenager' IT'S SO UNFAIR!!!! mode?

The FSO 125P we have just bought came from a chap who bought it to race, and Richies Caro. He's a top bloke for giving us the option to save them from the oval. Both cars are currently safely stashed away and you'll be able to read about the renovation of them over the coming months.

Still Morons.

Anyone who isn't a complete and utter moron would have known that a complete and saveable 67 Rapier might have a value, from the brainless sperm thief that wrecked it with a hiab to the other mong who raced it. Had that car been offered on the Bay of Evil, I'm sure it would have made a grand.

Morons, every single one involved in that chain of events.

I think you've lost the thread a little. Have you actually READ any of it? I'm sure people know of a ££ value, as well as a rarity value, but if all they want to do is feed their kids that night by plonking a ton and a half of mixed metals on a weighbridge, then so be it. I hope it bought a KFC bucket, some ice cream, and a 4 pack of cheap lager for the Mother. I really do. Some people live hand to mouth, and this is how they make their coin. Please leave them to it.

RBJ, chill out before you have a heart attack..... seriously. The cars aren't your property, you don't take rent off the Hiab owners, I bet you don't even know their names. Some people cannot wait for money to generate itself. They may have no computer or indeed literacy skills, but to label them morons and sperm thieves is over the top. I challenge you to rant like this to their faces, next time you see some family carrying out a house/garden clearance to pay for a funeral.... see, there's a circumstance for you. It would boil your blood to see waste, but if you know nothing of the facts, you cannot judge them for it. Perhaps stop and ask if you can help in anyway, by buying all of the dead cars and clearing them for her, instantly.... no? Perhaps you have no resources to be able to do that. Until you do, and are on a level playing field, I suggest you really do bite your lip on this subject. Open your eyes and tape your fingers up. Your responses are beginning to get on my tits.

I have read it. Quite calm and collected here - it's you that needs to blow the sand from your fanny, dear. Have a cuppa, and chill!

And they're still morons, and I judge them as such. Not my fault they're as thick as pigshit and need 200 pound to feed t'fambleh. :D

I'm entirely chilled, Beta-Blockers help that. Second "almost" heart attack caused by stress saw to that.... hence my warning to you to calm down....

I still don't find you funny in the slightest. You put forward a persona of having no perception of other peoples' circumstances. Whether it is merely you faffing around or not, some of us don't appreciate the suggestion of being any lesser than others. It ain't all rosy out there, and people do struggle to make ends meet. Your judgmental attitude, however "humorous" you try to make it, still has an air of bigotry about it. Try living life in someone elses shoes, go on, dare you. If you reply " I was there once", I won't believe it for a minute, as you would remember hardship. If you don't, I can only assume you ARE a bigot, and were born with a Silver Spoon in your mouth.

Remember, you will need people like me, a lot sooner than I need someone like you.

I don't see what this has got to do with poverty. I have lived on a very small income and I still recognise (and did at the time) that smashing up old, rare stuff for fun is RONG and generally done by the intellectually lacking.

Income and class don't come into it.

Blimey, a Guardian reader! You've been reading Rene Descartes again as well? I have of course given your little veiled threats the derision they deserve. But tell me - why would I 'need someone like you', exactly?

FYI - yes, I've been in a position of poverty. That's not the Jeremy Kyle watching dole sponging sort, but the Crisis Loan and cans of beans kind. I don't care to dwell on it much tbh. As has been said, it has nothing do dop with class or income but everything to do with stupidity.

P.S I'd still rather be a bigot than an ignorant Moron. :D
