OMG NO KAOS?

Roads are OK in West Yorks today, despite lots of OMG SNO overnight...

Plenty of dithering mongs at the top of steep-ish hills though:

I overtook this lot, who were travelling at 0.00015 mph, at a reasonable 15-ish mph without skidding once:

Dug out TV2 this morning. Note the cut-out in the snow on The Volvo's roof, which I made for snowfall measurement proposes; it seems that the Southend area got three inches yesterday:

Once I got all of the snow off its body, I went for a brief drive around the area. All credit to Southend Borough Council, as all the main roads were clear of snow. I hate to think what they were like yesterday evening, though; in a way, I'm glad that I was in bed all weekend with a 'flu-like illness, as I would have had to have driven to work when the snowfall was at its heaviest.

I reckon 3" as well Shep. Here's some of my fleet in the snow this morning.

Newly acquired Consul, driven back yesterday morning from SE London in heavy snow. It's had a wash since then!

I drove the Cambridge down to the bottom of the garden to turn it round where I promptly got stuck  Fortunately it made a rather nice photo.

And the view out of my window about ten minutes ago after we'd cleared the drive, my dad's £500 Rover 75 in the road, and my A35 and my mum's Zafira in the foreground.

Despite the BBC weather forecast saying that we wouldn't have snow here, its been snowing steadily all day. Not really sticking though. So maybe they were right.

I have lived in the N.E. of the US for over 12 years and have shoveled piles of snow taller than myself in the past to get the car out of the drive. Last year was the mildest winter I have ever seen (OMG only three piddly storms) and this winter is even milder (OMG leaves still on the trees). They don't know what to do with all the snow ploughs round here.

Lovely Consul! Is it a De-Luxe? :D

Thanks! The photo flatters it, but it scrubs up quite well :D

I have no idea if it's a Deluxe, how do you tell?

This morning as I was getting ready for work I watched an Audi A3 try to climb the gentle incline of my road, it didn't get passed half way, the road is chocca with compacted snow, a Transit also failed to make it to the top. My Rover on the other hand, like the Micra just didn't care/notice that there was any snow on the ground, so carried on regardless after being cleared of a huge blanket if snow.

Credit to the councils round here - they've kept all the main roads completely clear. But they'd be stupid not to; Surrey voters have got themselves so reliant on their cars that they have to drive everywhere. The mentality is "why would you walk/cycle/train anywhere when you earn enough to drive now?" which I find annoying, but these are people who have basically got a bit above themselves because they earn a bit more than everyone else. So you've got a lot of cocky arrogant people who think they're everything in their 5-year old Audis driving slightly more aggressively than they normally would be, despite every now and then there being a sheet of ice on the road. Luckily their cars are loaded with driver aids which moderate their driving, but there's only so much stupidity it can all deal with.

To be fair, public transport in this country (with the exception of London, which might as well be on a different planet), is uniformly shit. Slow buses, ridiculously expensive trains (Sheffield-Oxford £91 oneway, on an inflexible advance ticket!), which in any event only really travel North-South (jumping on the direct Liverpool-Norwich train is much slower than getting the train to London, taking the tube to change stations, and backtracking!), no services on Sundays, domestic flights disrupted every time there is a millimetre of snow...No wonder everyone drives everywhere.

Yes, you're right about the public transport in London on the whole being pretty good. I didn't fancy digging the Citroen out from under some heavy snow so took the tube to work. Although the journey's about an hour longer it's stupidly cheap! From High Barnet to Heathrow Airport for £6 return! Beat that! The fuel alone would be £12, plus wear & tear on the vehicle, and the snow hasn't affected the Piccadilly or Northern lines at all! These fares are "Oyster" fares, as opposed to ordinary ones. Yes, I reckon London's public transport's generally not too bad! I think I read somewhere that more journeys are made on the Underground every day than on the whole of British Rail (I mean all the railways, whatever company operate them!)

We've been snowed in since saturday. This morning a JCB arrivied from a nearby farm to clear the road, spent 3 hours clearing and digging cars out. Went to the yard to collect more logs, another hour digging so I could open the gates. Home about 4, just starting to snow again. Looked out just now and it's almost a foot deep on the freshly cleared bits. FFS

No SNOKAOS this morning at half 6, but lots of ICE KAOS!!!11

Not fully appreciating how icy it was, despite having to scrape a layer of it off the ZX, I was pottering along at my usual 65-70mph. Came to this corner...

Picture1.jpg

and the back end shot towards the pub, spinning the front around. Front tyres had grip luckily, so with some quick cadence braking and wheel turning, straightened up. It was only a small patch, so it corrected itself pretty quickly, but it was a clench moment!

Then, 4 miles up the road, coming around here...

Picture2.jpg

doing a very conservative 35mph now it slips again! I pulled over further up the road to check I had all 4 tyres etc and bloody slipped over getting out! No snow around at all, but the heavy rain must have froze in patches, as all the grit has washed away.

WINDKAOS in Manchester. There's sticks of varying sizes bloody everywhere...

Yeah, just a little bit! Got the Anglia up on stands to keep it out the water and screwed a couple of doors across the front and back door with plenty of expanding foam. Waist deep where those trucks are, that silver car is up on a verge - poor buggers went away for a few days and only came back last night.

Mother in law keeps talking about the bible. Saying all seasons will come one and the world will end by flood wind and fire. Swear she should be a priest.

Wow hope the water recedes quickly for you. The Thames has fallen now so the waters 12 inches below the floorboards now rather than 4. Is supposed to rain like a bastard tomorrow though.

Breadvan I feel your pain! Most my winter tyres have seen is a lot of puddles

I don't own any winter tyres.  That was just a lame-o-la FWP meme gag.

It never snows in Raleigh, NC. They aren't prepared.

You think you get OMGSNOKAOS, they bring it to a whole new level.
