Another shite car quiz

Seeing as the other xmas quiz thread seems to be more of a film snapshot thing then try this one, these questions are from a 1992 CAR magazine so some questions are a bit dated, see how many you can get WITHOUT googling!

I remember using this quiz extensively for creating others in various forums, so I'll butt out, but I do remember the "D'oh" moment when I realised the lateral thinking involved in #7.

Easy peasy, 'kin loads!.......

without googling...
awww. Three and one of those was number two. I'd have been hunted down and strangled by the 'shiter known as "Jack Harper's teeth" if I'd missed that one.

(I pondered over #7 for ages. Until I realised that it didn't specify at which end of the car the engine was located, so my answer to 7 is 3 NSU Prinzes. 8) )

LRs weren't offered with overdrive, as in factory fit overdrive? The units sometimes fitted were dealer jobs, supplied by Fairey among others but not a factory thing. As far as I know, but then I haven't looked at the scan of the answers on Trigger's hosting site yet.

I think that Volvo would have been the last to offer o/d on the very last of its RWD models (940?), so pretty recently then.

Just watch it be a trick question whose answer - technically - is that most motor manufacturers still offer overdrive in as much as there are very few boxes around where anything above 4th isn't higher than 1:1.

No19: is the answer Land Rover?

I'm pretty sure Volvo were still doing overdrive boxes in 1992.

I can answer 12 but I haven't checked if they are right.

Edit- beaten to it by GJR so I'll answer 22- Energy Absorbing

I was thinking Volvo as well for the overdrive question.

However I think Mitsubishi were doing 3-pd auto's with overdrive up to the late 90's

The other thing about #7 is that there's more of them since 1992! I can think of at least 5 pre-1993 cars without thinking of motorsport models, but suspect there are many more.

22 - "Energy absorbing"

Again technically  , and unlikely to be the device that CAR was talking about as their answer couldn't be as late, but Daimler-Benz used what was to all intents and purposes a 3 speed overdrive 'box in pre-2008 (450 model code) Smarts. OK, so they marketed it as a 6 speed device and it operated sequentially but that was a 3 speeder with mechanical overdrive to create the impression of 6 gears.

That Mitsubishi auto+OD would be the Aisin-Warner one very similar to that used in Volvos wouldn't it? So for that reason, I think that both Volvo and Mitsubishi would be equally valid answers and probably in the same period. The 940 was still on sale as late as 1998, possibly later (the latest I know of is a February 1998 car but that doesn't mean they didn't rumble on for longer), and its options included the AW71 auto+O/D as well as a manual +O/D box derived from the 240's one.

I doubt the Insignia was even thought about then

That is a pretty freakin hard quiz, i'm struggling with 90% of the questions, specially if I keep away from google and limit myself to pre-1992 cars to answer everything. I know that no.11 is the Alfa 90 though. And the VW1500 (no. 5) is from Argentina.

Let's have a go! It's hard building the 20 year age gap in mind!

5) the south American avenger

6) Lonsdale?

10) 4x4 405

14) AX Espace

17) cortina

18) dolly sprint (overdrive innit)

19) Mercedes

22) best before 1978

Now that everybody's had tome to see it I'll answer all the ones I think I know.

1- Renault 21

2. Triumph 1300/1500/Dolomite

5. Argentina, it's an Avenger wearing yet another badge

6. I'll say Lonsdale

10. Rolls Royce and 4x4 405

11. Renault 25

12. I'm going to guess 2CV

14. I'm not sure if it's what they are after but Avenger door pockets could take a full size bottle. The Sunbeam had the same pockets so that's two.

15. Subaru XT

16. Skoda?

17. Mk1 Cortina, unless Mk1 Mini had them

18. Dolomite Sprint

19. I'm saying Volvo but 1992 might be the year they discontinued it.

21. Fiat Punto, Peugeot 306

22. Energy Absorbing

24. First time I noticed was on a Mk1 Astra Estate

31. First one I noticed was Mk3 Escort

OK, since no-one (apart from GJR) has come up with any actual answers for #7 I'll tell you the secret.....think mid engined.

Fiat X1/9, Lamborghini Miura, Toyota MR2, Lancia Stratos, plus whatever we've had since. (MGF, Elise etc...)

And rear engined too of course, such as

#7: Suzuki Whizzkid.
and the NSU that I recently mentioned somewhere. Possibly here, possibly in the Reliant World forum. Brain in park or neutral since it's a holiday......

Probably completely wrong but for number 7 I would guess Lotus Elise and MG F??

Edit: Stupid answer as they weren't about in 1992.
