VERDICT: LOVELY LOOKING MOTAH

Posted

Brings back memories, when i started as an apprentice panel beater i used to work on probaly half a dozen of these a week.

Great cars to work on, i think i've replaced every panel on one of those ( chassis legs, roof skins,inner/outer quarters etc) a word to the wise though if your going to replace panels do yourself a favour get genuine (not that expensive these days) as spurious panels tend to fit like a cock in a shirtsleeve.

Cheers for the heads up....surely it depends on how big the cock is?

Gloss white hubcaps ? The Fiesta Bonus wheeltrims were finished in white :) The Ford caps make the car look so much nicer

Posted

Yes they do, although ford did do some terrible hubcaps in their time. All I want now is a wider set of steels to put them on as these tyres are far too skinny for my liking

Posted

My Fiesta is on XR2i spec 13" steel rims running 185 60 R13 tyres which feel nice

Posted

I'm struggling to find a set! Also looking for a cheap lowering kit with matched dampers. One thing I cannot bear is the ride height.

Posted

Think I've got a Haynes manual for this shape of Fiesta if you haven't got one/ if its any good to you;

Drop us a pm if you want it and I'll bung it in the post.

That underbody is astonishingly clean! Apart from the front x member it looks like a 2 year old motor!

Good find there!

For uber-shichten points, the local Ford Dealer where I used to live in Linlithgow, Regent Motors, flogged some Popular models by fitting a roof spoiler and gold wheeltrims. They called it the 'Regency'.

Posted

The regency? Awesome! The front is still only light surface rust, it comes off with a bit of wire wool, once I do it all then I will treat it all.

Doctormop pm heading your way matey

One issue with the car i'm not sure about is the paintwork. It is very pink and very patchy. I have used compound on one half of the bonnet, it came up gleaming, then a few days later, its pink and patchy

It needs some holes welding up on the scuttle/fuel filler and tailgate so will need a fair bit of paint anyway, but I want to stray away from red. Ive never been a fan of red if i'm honest, unless its a Ferrari..

The colour scheme i'm thinking is this:

Untitled-2.jpg

Either 1 colour or 2 tone, not entirely sure, but then lower the car a touch over the steel wheels and wheel trims, I think it would look quite nice in all fairness. That or beige..

Not 100% on whether it will happen yet, but that's what I want.

Posted

Fair do's if thats what you want but I love these Fezzers as is. Getting rare now and I reckon that by remaining standard the car will have a better chance of surviving should you sell it on.

Only suggestion would be to bin the trimz and get some 'hub cap' type ones that cover only the bolts and spray the steels.

But hey its your motor!

Posted

I'm not sure I would bin the hubcaps, I do like them to be fair, plus the wheels underneath are ugly as an ugly person that fell from an ugly tree.

Like I said I'm not sure about the brown, if I do it, I will go for the top colour all over.

Posted

I might be saying something stupid here (but it would be a shame to drop a developing theme) but mightn't the paint need a polish applied after the compound to preserve the shine? Even so a couple of days gleam is still a poor return..

Posted

After it was compounded I used auto glym super resin polish, which I've used since I used to be a valeter as it is by far the best polish. The Volvo was similar, the pinkness would come back but it would take a few weeks and not days in the case of the fiesta. When money allows I will definitely get it painted.

Bit of progress with uncle festa. My mate said he had a present for me that he took off his old car. It turned out to be some lowering springs and Koni sport adjustable shocks. Result.

Next job was fit them. Job jobbed and I think they are a major improvement. Sensible height, I can still go over speedbumps at normal speed and it handles so much nicer, not like a sailing boat...

Then I turned my attention to the wheel trims. They were in very bad condition, only managed to paint 1 so far, have been spending all my time stripping and prepping them.

And in between I have bought some RS accessory goodies for very very cheap. This includes RS front and rear underbumpers and rear spoilers for that retro vibe.

Here they are in the 1989 catalogue.

I have also been given an RS turbo steering wheel, centre console and gearknob, which makes the inside a nicer place to be.

Still not sure on my plans for paint yet. Although I have a tin of Ford Carnival red which looks quite tasty.

Front RS underbumper fitted..

Will be staying black,I think it looks better with the original bumpers.

Plans are;

Red stripe in the bumpers,

Some sort of rubbing strip/pin stripe down the side,

Fit new RS tailgate as original one is rotten,

Fit lower RS tailgate spoiler,

Fit new windscreen rubber,

Prep work and then paint in red.

Following on with RS accessory parts...I found THE most unfashionable set of retro wheels for sale which will fit this car perfectly. 3 spokes FTW NOT DRIFT OR BARN FIND OLDSKOOL RETRO FORD INNIT

Also won this for 20 notes, absolute bargain for this.

Can finally chuck the rotten tailgate in the scrap pile!

Also, today, whilst very bored and unable to do much because of the rain. I decided to prove to my misses how bad the Isle of Sheppey was, so took a drive over. It was as bad as I remembered, a timewarp/boarded up/inbred dive. She believes me now.

Anyway, a quick shot in Leysdown outside the bangin arcades. I had to take the shot quickly as a huge group of tracksuit wearing morons were huddled together shiftily walking down the street towards me!!

That's looking very smart, a nice combo of bolt on bits and povvo spec.

I don't usually post here but your early Fez brought back some memories!

My Grandmother bought a brand new 'F' plate 'L' model.. in erm, Gold, with the awful rubber-band automatic transmission. It was one of the first Mk3's to hit the roads as my uncle worked at Dagenham and got a very good deal on it.

It was the first car I drove and as a 17yr old, it felt a bit, uggh, like a gold Fiesta auto!!! Only saving grace as I remember was the standard fitment of a Weber carb on the auto models, as opposed to the Ford VV on the manuals.

The wheel trims, I can advise on if you wanted originality.

The povo spec cars had the standard steel wheel, with small black centre caps-

The one I drove was an 'L' spec car which still had the plain wheel on show but had a bigger 'hub' cap-

As the car aged, the wheels went rusty very quickly, I mean in a matter of a few years. The car only did 10,000 miles in the first 4/5 years and was garaged but still the thing rusted and got scabby.

Hence, Grandma telephoned the local ford main dealer (Haynes of Maidstone) and they fitted a new set of full trims, like these below!-

Mk3Fiestatrims.jpg

Oh the luxury !

The car didn't last long, these early F-registered models were flawed. I remember it needing repairs quite often. It detonated its autobox at around 15k miles. Haynes fitted a new one and that didn't last much longer.

Still, I have fond memories of thrashing the car about. It felt very solid compared to the Mini I had at the time.

I still have the dealership documentation/ welcome pack that came with the New 1989 Fiesta. It consisted of stickers, leaflets and curiously, a Ford branded cassette with classical music on it and some great 80s Ford man voice-overs :D

Hope you don't mind me indulging in my mk3-shaped memories, I think you should do your best to save this car- it'll be a very rare survivor one day- they weren't built to last.

Thanks for that reply, I love it when people have fond memories of old shite. I have vivid memories of being driven around in my grandads bright red sierra sapphire, would love one now though!

I also found the Ford accessory catalogue with the wheels in! Pure retro, I CANNOT wait for people to tell me how shit and dated and unfashionable they are!

From the same catalogue, I didn't realise how disgustingly disgusting some of the optional bits were!

Here are the external decals
