Shite might-have-beens

OK, I’m going to attempt starting a shite thread. I’ve been wondering about might have been variations of popular cars (great cars which never existed, but were perfectly conceivable).

Who here wants a Primera GT-R, or even better a Primera GT-R estate?

I’ve also been dreaming about a Mondeo RS Cosworth as well...

But I think my best creation is a Polo 2 Coupe GTi. They did a Polo 2 GT but I’m not very taken with it. Or for ultimate shitness, how about a Polo Classic GTi? Shove some BBS alloys on it, stiffer suspension, a small spoiler and a hike in power and you’re there. Or maybe it would have worked as a dealer special? A sunroof, decent audio system and half leather...I reckon it would be a pretty sought after car...hope you like the pissing around (sorry, hard work) I’ve done...

Starting with this...

A change of alloys maybe?

You got me

Both of those are actually available to view. The Metro is at Gaydon and I’m not sure about the SD1 estate, but I know for a fact that it is still around.

It’s things like that which make me say “why?â€Â. I reckon the SD1 estate would have gone down a treat. And the fact that they made one shows they were serious about it at one stage...

And now I’m hankering after a Polo Classic GTi...

A Dolly estate, I like it :) It could have pre empted the 3 series Touring about a decade in advance...

There were 2 SD1 estates - one is at Gaydon, the other at Haynes Sparkford. One was David Bache's personal car I believe.

Completely stolen from other forums and I claim no credit for them, but here are some people's ideas of what a Vanden Plas Marina may have looked like

I edited a photo of a Maestro years ago and made it into a Tourer I called the Maestego

I always thought a MK2 Cavalier SRi Estate would have been a pretty tidy thing to tool around in. More so in white or metalic ice blue.

How about the Skymera? Do-able with an estate, and a 200SX engine. Oh, and a lot of time and effort to graft the R34 panels on. Go the whole hog, and casually lob in the entire drivetrain from a Pulsar GTi-R.

I’ve also been dreaming about a Mondeo RS Cosworth as well...

Ford had one of the semi-works teams try this, back in the day (might have Mountune iirc), when they were sizing up how to play the BTCC/FIA regulations like a banjo. Rejected for being too front-end heavy, and apparently a turbo Zetec was tried too.

Yup, I’m a sad fucker.

If you are, then I am too. Since '93, I've had recurring dreams about building an Astra Turbo. The Cav/Calibra mechanicals in a Mk3 shell, as Vauxhall should've done. I'd have mine as an approximation of 'factory' just to see how it might have been.

Mid engined Mk2 Renault 5 GT Turbo Maxi.

Mondeo V6 4wd. That's been on the list for a while.

Volvo V(an)70. After the yellow one which came up on the tat thread a while back, I've been thinking. It didn't look quite right with the standard estate front doors, and the rest of it panelled up; so how about letting in a pair of coupe front doors? Major, major surgery I reckon - letting in the coupe B-pillar on each side would help, but the V/S doors have top frames, where the C doors don't. And I'm not even sure the C's windscreen profile is the same either...

Looking back at some of these, that S3/Silver Shadow is hideous but wouldn't a Rover 800 "Avant" have been just the thing for carving them a slice of the premium lifestyle estate market?

They made 6 of these Bentley Dominators for the Sultan of Brunei, who also owned that Ferrari 456 wagon. Legend has it that he alone kept Bentley afloat for a few years by ordering so many bespoke motors.

Skoda Estelle Estate.

Daihatsu Applause Estate.

Matra Rancho 4x4.

Peugeot 104/205 breadvan.

5-door Panda (mk1) and Marbella.

SEAT Ibiza Carrera Targa- that's what I call "System Porsche".

Alfa 164 Lusso V6 Coupe.

and the most obvious of them all

TOYOTA STARLET/COROLLA PANEL VAN- I can't believe how Toyota have just surrendered that market to people like PSA and FIAT who are renowned* for reliability.

Some are, some aren't. The Rover RDX I posted exists/existed in at least 2 prototypes that Lara Croft types papped in the remains of Longbridge.

You've nearly described my car in the first post, Got a 1.4 abd from a mk3 golf to stick in with the original gearbox. Should be interesting.

Mk3 Cavalier estate. One day (if I ever acquire skills, patience, money, time and tools) I'm going to make one.
