R9UKE Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 A few of you expressed an interest in seeing more of this old girl so here she is. Those of you tat didn't see the ebay tat entry - it was on Gumtree for £450. I emailed offering £200 and she was on my drive that night. Absolute bargain? hmmm... probably about right to be honest, with no tax and test and having the few issues that it does. The Xedos was always a bit of a mystery to me, and with so little to lose, I'm glad I got it. It's a 1997 2.0 V6 SE Manual. I have no idea where that puts it in the range but it's got a leather interior, automatic AC, cruise, leccy windows all round and an electric drivers seat - the Xedos budget obviously didn't stretch to the passenger side. The ride is absolutely shit - That'll be down to the bad boy council estate rims though. The reason it failed it's last MOT was one of the rear callipers which is well and truly shagged. After a few braking episodes it decides it doesn't want to part company with the disc and gets to the point where a handbrake isn't necessary. Christ knows what the fuel consumption drops to and there's a great smell of heated brakes when you decided you've had enough Xedos fun. Apparently that's why the ABS light is burning, I'm not convinced that's the whole problem though. The seats are bloody brilliant. Really nice soft leather which needs a good scrub but should come up great. The curvy dash and heater controls came as a surprise from the Japs, but it makes for a completely shit lower centre console which consists of little more than a tacky Sony head unit - does anyone know if this was what Mazda fitted them with??? There's a CD changer in the boot. The 2.0 V6 is the best thing about this car. You forgive it for being rather mundane as soon as you start it up. It has an equally pleasing meaty growl and acceleration should be good - I'll know properly when the brakes aren't binding!! It's one of those that wants to be revved... unlike my V6 Renaults. My plan for it? Very unsure as the weather here is shite at the minute and I haven't had a chance to get underneath or sort out the rear brakes. I'm not sure whether it's worth my while MOTing it. I keep my cars in the bogs of Irish countryside and a blast around the country roads in a less than road legal V6 isn't really a problem. Soooo... I'm thinking possibly flog the wheels (with VERY good tyres) and be left with a Xedos which will hopefully owe me less than £100. That way I don't need to do anything with it, it'll be a nice car to have in the collection and can be started up and taken for a blast whenever needs be.

Cavcraft Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Looks good that and 'can't go wrong' money too. I'd bet the CD is aftermarket, I've had a couple of similar ones in various cars I've had. Also the head unit in your's looks like a CD player itself so I'm sure the standard one would have been radio cassette or it'd have come with two CD players inc. the boot changer.

R9UKE Posted October 14, 2012 Author Posted October 14, 2012 Exactly what I thought Cav until I pressed the button and front dropped to reveal a cassette deck....

ashmicro Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Head unit looks later than the car. I wonder if the sticky caliper is the same as a Ford one of some type? Either way, for 200 bills, that's fab. My 2002 S Type came with a single CD player in the dash, and a changer in the boot, but the 05 X Type has a cassette + changer! Cassette players are useful for MP3 player connectivity.

phil_lihp Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 That seems like a huge amount of car for the money, especially with an interior like that. Those wheels are dreadful though, a set of OEM alloys would be a huge improvement. Surely if the only significant issue is the stuck caliper it wouldn't be too much to an MOT? If it has the typical levels of Jap reliability it could make a good daily driver.

Charlie Croker Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 That Mazda is well fit.lol. I had one a few years ago and it was indestructable..........beleive me it was flogged to within inches of its life. I would have that in a flash. I think the wheels really set it off. Very well bought i say.

STUNO Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 I had a look through our sales lists and came up with a few photos of the dash. The car MAY be a bit older than 1997, the ones here are all JDM and are about 1993-4, imported 1997? also they are badged as Eunos in Japan. Also whole looking this came up.1990 Mazda Cosmo 3 rotor turbo, Want! Can't have! link to ad with photos.......http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-ca ... 820953.htm

dollywobbler Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 I'm stunned by how uncluttered the dashboard is. So few buttons given that it's an executive machine. I like that. I've always liked these. T'was good times when they were doing the BTCC. They never seemed much good but they sounded nice.

R9UKE Posted October 14, 2012 Author Posted October 14, 2012 Thanks guys, cheers CHUNO, that cassette deck looks far more in keeping with the Xedos theme. Any guesses as to what to realistically expect for the wheels? £100? The 5 stud obviously limits their appeal. May flog the stereo with CD changer too, it looks shit.

RoadworkUK Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 That's super acceptable. The wheels are fairly similar to those that the Xedos 9 came with at the death.

KruJoe Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 This does look remarkably similar to what I know as the Lantis: ...which, despite looking larger, is related to this shape of 323: There is a 2.0 V6 ZXi version of that 323F with five stud wheels (I'd love one). They're not uncommon, so may be a source of parts, and the ZXi boys would love those wheels. Offer them as a part-ex for some standard ones. The 1.5 and 1.8 323s have four stud wheels, and (probably) a different rear brake set up. Good luck with it, I hope it lives on.

M'coli Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 That dashboard looks like a very nice place to sit behind! These look quite good these days, quite anonymous and handsome and younger than mid-90s.

Pillock Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 That 323 and the Lantis above share doors for a start, although they don't look at all right on the saloon. As for the Xedos, I remember the launch of it - there was a discussion in Auto Express about how to pronounce the name. I think Mazda stepped in and said it was "Cuh-see-dos". Wheels aren't too offensive to me, but Googleage suggests they're 5x114.3 so you'll be wanting to fling them up on Hyundai, Mazda or Mitsubshi forums mostly. Or find a really desperate Ferrari 458 Spyder owner. Full list here: http://www.wheelfitment.eu/car/Mazda/Xe ... 20-%202000)/

Until a Mazda exec came down and corrected us that it should be 'Ker-see-dos' And IIRC the radios originally fitted were Clarion, although it was 90-92 when I worked there, so may have changed in subsequent years.
