e: New 4x4. Advise- fuel consumption calculation

Evening ladies and gentlemen. Please examine the picture below and the motor vehicles contained within.

IMAG2305_zpsb55089d4.jpg

One of these is a reasonably economical superb tow vehicle with high reliability and low running costs.

One of them is what I bought from darkest Barmouth and drove back to sunny Bewdley.

One is French.

One is some plastic soft roader.

One is a Focus in odd clothes.

Bonus inclusion of my English Springer looking at me having been introduced to new mode of transport. In fairness the look probably gives it away...

Let the flaming/hilarity/condolences/incredulity/BlindHatredOfGM commence. :-)

I can see a rusty, unreliable, fuel guzzling, poorly made 4x4 thete alright

But let's leave your neighbour out of this for a moment. Like your Fronterror but probably the only one on hete who does.

Not so; Occasional contributor, full time lover of the Fronterror. Run a MK1 SWB myself and always makes me smile. 8)

I've just moved my Fronterror Sport* on - I think I liked it because they are so unloved.

Had five or so. Still have two actually, so three 4x4 now in total. Forgot to tell wife about one of them....

Anyways...my new shite is shite.

I think FruntHorrors make a perfect shite 4X4, You would have had to be criminally insane to have bought one new, but thats not the point.

Ps, the 2.3 slighty crashed fronterror is for sale. mostly to fuel the 3.9 v8 gas guzzler parked on my neighbours drive... ooooer.

Posted

Sorry. You fail. While the 2.3 turbo (allegedly) diesel is shite slow, the ultimate shite-spec Frontera must have the 2.5-litre VM four-headed monster.

Seriously though, I class the Frontera like my Maverick. Unjustly unloved and therefore stonking value. I'd quite like to try Frontera ownership. I have driven a few but not managed to actually own one (and therefore off-road it) yet. They're meant to be pretty good.

I look at that photo and think - god those garages are narrow

Posted

Yep - the builder actually got two more houses in the close, so none of them then had a garage after he moved all the houses up. You can just get a Swb fronty in and open a door. Partly. :-/

The 3.9 is actually wider than the door. ^^

Fuel consumption update - 10 gallons from empty (literally....whoops) later I have cover 135 miles. Admittedly at a fair rate of knots...

Hmmm. LPG recommendations anyone? prob going to be doing about 10k in next year in this or split across 2 vehicles. Got to be worth looking at?

Aye, they had -

Frontera A

2.3 CF lump with a turbo bolted on.

2.8 isuzu - best of all of them.

2.5 VM (insert comment here)

Frontera B

2.2 Dti Ecotec (pump eater)

Imagine going from the 2.8 pullanythingdeadreliablestartsin -20 to that VM thing.

Shoehorned it into some Omegas as well.

Must admit I thought the 2.5s were Japanese engines tbh.

Still maintain the 8V (petrol) Sport is the best of the bunch.

Aye Billy, the C20/X20 take some beating. The 2.8 is ridiculous in a shorty though, so will be keeping that one!

Range Rover bought at the behest of SWMBO as she is a bit of a self-confessed L-R snob - she did some navigating in some loony Disco/RR thing for years. Fairly sure It'll be a weekend thing once fettled as it's crippled my fuel budget in a week. Ace noise though !

2.5 VM (insert comment here)

I think this is the same engine as the Scorpio diesel - gear driven OHV so no timing belts or chains to worry about. Pretty much an off the shelf engine for engineering wonders like the TX4 and LDV Maxus. Made in Italy.

Posted

The engine used in the TX4 and Maxus is a later belt driven OHC effort I think.

I like the VM OHV engine, they are much maligned but very torquey and reliable in my experience. I cooked the one in my Rover 825D when the bottom radiator hose fell off, topped it up with ditch water and it was fine, no 4xHGF.

VM engine is not exactly refined, but I found it a pleasure in my Rangie. Also fitted (midly modified) to the Rover 800, Ford Scorpio, Jeep Cherokee, Alfa Romeo 164 (not sold here sadly) and probably loads of other stuff.
