Shite my family has owned

Some members of my family have owned some fairly disastrous cars. Sadly, I don't have photos for them but they include a Renault 14, Renault 12, Renault 30, Chrysler Alpine which was replaced by a Talbot badged variant, Peugeot 104, Maxis galore, Triumph Spitfire, Austin 1300s. Mini Clubman, a few Mk3 Escorts and a couple of Landcrabs. The worst I can remember was probably a bright yellow (probably ex-phone company) Commer van. That got replaced by a Dodge badged version of the same van. I have a picture of my grandad and his NSU Ro80 somewhere but need to dig that out.

The shite posted below is me old man's. Some of these motors I grew up with as a kid. The street cred of having a Fiat at school was nil. Still, didn't bother me, I liked shite back then too.

Dad's first car, Datsun 120Y:

This was replaced by this:

Clutch went on this in the drive way the day after purchase. Didn't stay with us for very long. It was replaced by this:

Datsun Cherry GL Coupe

Then this replaced the Datsun and basically started my dad's 20+ years of owning Fiats. Uno 70S

Punto 55 SX

Bravo 1.4 SX. This is still in the family, Dad sold it to my uncle and at some point it's coming back to me when he's finished with it.

I like the increasing camera quality juxtaposed against the decreasing car build quality.

I nearly bought a Datsun 120Y back in 88 but it seemed to be made of a poor quality tin foil. Nice looking car but very rusty...i seem to recall the boot and doors were all different colours.

I wouldnt say no to a nice Tipo now...thats a lot of car for the money although they have always screamed Italian Maxi to me... :D

Whats physically wrong with the Jaguar ?

Needs a full resto, really. Rotten, interior has seen better days, paintwork is crap and the engine is seized I believe. Other than that, nothing's wrong with it! :D

I love Fiats anyway (judging by how many my old man had, then how many I've had I ought to really) and the Tipo remains one of my favourites. I can see what you mean about being the Italian Maxi though :)

Oooh, this 120Y had quite a bit of tin worm. I remember the old man had a very low speed impact with a car coming the other way and the front disintegrated. At the time he was a caretaker at a school, and a refurb job had been done and they'd thrown out the old metal paper towel dispensers to make way for new plastic jobbies. The old man took them for his brother to use as he was a welder. Turns out it was those towel dispensers that kept the front of the Datsun together until it was scrapped a few years later.

Well, being a 240,unless it had the optional leather it will have the ambla seats which tend to last fairly well, but that still leaves lots of wood and other trim to perish with age ! Id be tempted to take all the spark plugs out,and pour some diesel or parrafin down the plug holes and leave it for a week or so to see if it helps to ease the engine, and try to get her moving again.

Will be a nice car when put back on the road, but they cost more to fix than they are worth sadly, but still a lovely car to have, and better value than the bigger engined models.I spent ages looking for a Jaguar, but ended up with a Daimler instead

Haaahaha, missed that earlier on :D

Father in law has been meaning to do stuff to the Jag, as it's been in the family since the mid eighties when he bought it for fifty quid. Did it up and used it as a daily driver. The last eight or so years though, it's been stood. He begin to start stripping it down a couple of years ago but work commitments have just gotten in the way and not much more has been done. Don't think he has the inclination to either, sadly.

Had he got the Jag in good dry storage ? Maybe see if he will let you practise your skills on it;Jags rust even more than Fiats !
