Ayubowan! In the dim and distant past I promised you some snaps from over here in Ceylon. Sorry it took so long but here's a selection of tat for your enjoyment....

First up, these photos don't do justice to just how bolloxed these two vans were

Like I said, no MoT here...

These bastards are absolutely everywhere

sMN5El.jpg

Old Toyotas, Datsuns and the like are common, too, such as these..

Loving the mismatched alloys on this

2v99Sl.jpg

Saw this home-built bike/trike type thing in Negombo

4bLSnl.jpg

On the Kandy-Colombo Road, I spotted this from the bus so jumped out, legged it back up the hill and got hold of the owner

Hasn't moved for a while...

The guy was sound and said he'd be open to decent offers for it but I'm not sure you can export old cars from here (something to do with anything over 50 years old being an antique or similar cobblers).

He also had these in his yard plus more Minors and a customised Austin Ten

Further down the Colombo Road, there's a dealership specialising in old British classics. He had various Minors, A55s and so on, plus a yard full of old crap waiting to be restored. The old bloke doing the welding was shit hot, I must say...

Txh38l.jpg

Can't remember what it was (some kind of Austin, IIRC) but pretty much the whole underside had been replaced. I have more pics of the stuff they had in, Devons, Somersets, Opel Kapitan etc if you want to see them.

Nice Minx on sale at the same place

LyzP9l.jpg

Surprisingly few of these here, seeing as we're so near to India

KWPuZl.jpg

I've seen several of these here, too.

Couldn't get a good shot of this as the driver was off like the clappers.

Saw this in Kandy and was chatting to the owner who said he was going to restore it. That was a year ago. Saw it last week (no camera with me) and it was absolutely mint.

Need a cab?

ag8B6l.jpg

This Peugeot's been here for donkey's years. It's like the Flintstones' car-no floors...

oai45l.jpg

Fancy a Stellar?

lwVFyl.jpg

Last one for now is this beastie. Plenty of trucks with wooden load spaces here.

Hope you like them. If you want more, say the word!

Lovely jubbly.

The Pugs 404 and 504 are as rare as hens teeth in the UK so its always good to see them in the wild. Any likelihood that either of those will be restored or is there no love for them there either?

Great photos.

What's the deal with having a car on the road overthere? Are there any forms of test etc?

Regarding the Pugs, there are a fair few 404s and 504s kicking about as daily drivers. Peugeot seem to be the most common Euro make over here, with some 505s, at least 1 304 estate, 405s and suchlike. There are a few Fiats, mainly old stuff like 600s and the 1100 saloon, Plenty of old VWs, one or two Renaults, the odd Rover/BL thing (I've seen 3 Marinas, some 1100/1300s and a Montego but never when I've had my camera, sadly  ) but sod all Citroens, oddly. Indian, Japanese and Korean stuff is everywhere. Old BMC stuff is still in abundance (our colonial past strikes again) but there are few Fords, although they've recently opened a new dealership in Colombo so that'll probably change.

The buses are all either Tata or Lanka Ashok Leyland (yep, the plughole of doom still lives!) and are generally pretty knackered, overcrowded and dirty. Driving 'skills' here are fucking frightening, believe me! No-one ever seems to use mirrors, they sound their horns and pull straight out without giving a bugger what's coming the other way, they undertake, overtake on blind bends, plus you have the bikes and 3-wheelers dipping in and out and, as you can imagine, it makes things 'entertaining'. It's a wonder more people aren't killed. There's no MoT but vehicles have to (read: if the owner can be arsed/has the readies) have a yearly emissions test, not that you'd know it from the crap everything pumps out here. You need insurance and tax here but, again, no speed/traffic cameras or ANPR means you can get away with that most of the time plus, if you get pulled over by the boys in khaki, you can generally bribe them not to do you for it... I love this country :D

Is that peculiar thing cobbled together out of two Honda C50/70/90s twin engined? What an excellent device. Don't know why I didn't think of it.

Excellent spots! That nanocab is gr8.

Not much good for the airport run with a bunch of suitcases though.
