What age can you own a Car

A friend’s son who is 14 wants to buy an old car to tinker with before he reaches driving age, he has off road parking for it. The car we have found had an MOT until 2 weeks ago and has been in use. The tax disc will have to be returned because it will no longer be insured.

He would like the car in his own name, I have searched the direct gov site and I can find nothing about a minimum age to become the registered keeper of a car and declare it SORN. Anybody know any different, as I don’t want to get the lad into trouble?

To get a V5 all you need is a name and address so I wouldn't have thought so.

^^^ WHS, my first car was in my name at 14 (VTC 263H). Cost me £50 from my Saturday job money.

Thanks it looks like Oliver will be able to have the car in his name.

With the price of scrap cars high at the moment the best I could find is £150 for a 1995 Citroen ZX 1.9D that is in good working order. It just needs a few jobs to be done such as adjusting the handbrake if he wants to bring it up to MOT standard. The car has a few knocks and scratches and the glass sunroof has been replaced with a wooden replacement. Oliver partially wants a diesel car without electronics, so the choice was limited.

No age limit needed, or even proof of humanity. I once bought a car off a cat.

Well, a car registered in the name of a cat.

Was it an honest cat, selling you a fairly described car?

I expect it was purrfect although you'd have to paws for thought before handing over the cash I suppose.

Sorry. Couldn't resist.
