Yes Johnf ,21 years past in may.

Thought so. And I'm sure we all agree that buying new(ish) cars from a dealer would suit most members of the general public best.

In the same way, us lot don't spend all our time on ToasterShite, mocking the fools that buy a brand new Bodum Bistro 2-slice for £60 when their 1970s avocado green Dualit 3-slice only cost them 10/- back in the day and is still toasting strong (eeeeeh, they don't make 'em like they used to, etc.).

But back to cars – we're 100% going to stick up for the old snotters in here, it's what autoshite is about. So we might as well shit-can this pointless conversation & get back to drooling over unloved ageing tat

Now, I've qualified my statement above, which part of my sentence is in bad English?

Good to see you've given up the fags.

In my case, it's old Citroen XM estate vs newish Audi A4 Avant - sorry, but the Citroen wins.

Would you stop putting fucking words in my mouth?

At no point did i say everyone who drives a modern is a dickhead, i said, jokingly, that Audi A3 drivers are dickheads....present comoany excepted. But you chose to intetpret that as refering to all modern car buyers.

Suggest you either

A) stay off the site whilst you are giving up smoking or....

B) take up smoking

Either way I thought wed settled this by PM yet you cant help but kick off again. Who's the keyboard warrior now?

For the record the A3 has been around for years so dont know how that qualifies me as a modern hater....you dont half take things personally...suggest you're preaching to the wrong forum

Well, what this thread seems to indicate that whilst people who buy new cars might not be cunts, people who sell them for a living definately are total and utter cunts...

Many moons ago, I had the dubious pleasure of trying to flog Fiats [around about the time the first Uno came out] Flogging new 131s which had been sitting in a wet field for 3 years was no picnic, especially as Fiat's anti corrosion warranty had more holes in it than the cars..........

That's the era i would have liked to have worked in,70's onwards.

This threads going well then?

What about the Audi 100?

I have worked for an Alfa dealer, every single member of staff there was a total cunt. Also worked for Fiat, only about 50% of them were wankers, the rest were OK.

What about the Audi 100?

Like to point out thats not my bird just in case you thought that was the Coupe the horrific bint was leaning on. Its an 8yr old meme.

The 100 is getting a service this weekend and will be selling itself unashamedly on here next week for £500 with more than a bootfull of spares (with the amount you gave me Tim, I can build a 2nd car). Wont run on petrol as when the petrol thieves drilled the tank it did not run on petrol for ages and the carb is now spraying petrol all over the exhaust manifold, but with 10 months MOT and 5 months tax hopefully it will sell and pay for about 3 days fuel on the coupe (work is a full 4 miles away).

However I have proved with maths and that that the coupe is cheaper to own than a modern desiesel and at the same time I have apparently proved that there is a lot of anger north of the border in my homeland. I can only assume that there is a shortage of ecstacy at the moment

Obviously selling the Avant and keeping the coupe is doing the wrong thing but love the coupe. Its the luxury thing you were on about last night Tim. It great. I know it will cost me thousands to maintain but its SOOOOOO COOOOOL!

Selling cars in the 70's would have been mint. Flogging Fords would have been like shelling peas.

I worked for three Alfa dealers between 1985 and 1996. Two were okay but the third (Robinsons in Cambridge) were Fiat/Alfa and absolutely shocking. Most folk were okay but it only took two wankers in service to fuck everything up.

As for new cars, I had only one, a Ford Ka back in 1999-2001 where I was charging 40p a mile for every one of the allowable 10'000 a year. I therefore made about six grand on fuel, but it still cost me £4000 to effectively rent the car for a couple of years. However, it did it's job perfectly and it was worth it to me at the time.

Unless you are getting travel costs back to offset the payments, I don't see how its worth it. The Fiat 500 deal is £5000 gone with nothing to show at the end. You'd be better off borrowing 5 grand and buying a three year old Yaris. Or buying seven old Jags.

Right, ignoring all the bickering earlier in this thread I am resurrecting it as I have gone and bought a XJ8. I decided to set aside about £1k for a new car to replace the Audi. I was basically looking for something that was the total opposite of the Visa, so big engined, refined and a total money pit .

I had LOTS of cars on my watch list but one was standing out as it finished on bank holiday Sunday at 7pm. Normally Sunday at 7pm is a smart time to finish your auction but if you forget its a bank holiday you could be in trouble as 75% of your potential buyers are down the pub getting rinsed.

Therefore I thought I might get a bargain here so I came back from the pub early and picked up a few cans of Strongbow to sit and sup at my computer whilst the missus watched some banal drama series like Casualty or something on catchup.

The ad for the car was pretty basic but covered most stuff. It was going on about corrosion which I think put a few potential bidders off but thats not something that scares me. I spoke to the seller and he seemed reasonable. Most of the photos were okay but I have picked this one from the ad just to wind up Junkman ;) although to be fair to the seller these are bigger than the average car so it is probably slightly more difficult to get it all on shot.

$_57.JPG

The car was listed as having been stood for a couple of years but having been resurrected by the chap selling it. The timing chains were done and it was T&T'd. With 10 mins to go the auction was at £450. My earlier bid to check if my computer was working right of £420 had been beaten.

I had been watching how much these had been going for over the last few weeks so was thinking a bid of about £800 would bag it for me on a normal day. Fuelled by the Strongbow I chucked in my maximum bid of £820 in the last few seconds but could have kept a fair bit back as got it for a MEGABARG £565.

I know people have got these cheaper in the past but hell, it have just paid 1.3% of the £42k when new price. If I adjust the £42k by inflation its £68,800 so by those standards I have got it for a mere 0.8% of the original price in today's money. RESULT. Stick that in your cigar and smoke it.

I contacted the seller and went to collect it on Tuesday from Kettering. Train fare was only £18.50 from Shipley but I did have to change about a zillion times and EVERY train had some bird on it talking loudly on her mobile. Fuck that, its quiet carriages for me in future.

On the way I was really hoping it was as described as I only had a one way ticket.

I got down there at about 6pm, he picked me up at the station exchanged money and I dropped him off at the pub and set off on my way back to Leeds.

Here is the standard petrol station shot. I will probably be able to get a few of these:

It was an uneventful journey and I got back at 8.45 and rang Mrs Imp to come out and have a look at it and I could take her for a drive. When she came outside she started laughing and gasped 'Its so BIG!', so I put it back in my trousers and told her to get in the car.

The corrosion is minimal but will be painting the floor with something in the next few weeks to protect it for winter. Little lumps on one of the arches but nowt serious.

Been using it a few days now and a quick MPG check is giving me 23 and all I have done is drive to work each day so would think that it would be worse. I pretty much always have it in S mode as prefer the gearing on that so would assume I cold get even better.

Its VERY comfortable. The sound system is ace, the only electrics that don't work that I have found are the electric mirrors which you never use anyhow.

I also need to watch myself as after driving the Visa I have found myself breaking the law a little easily. On the way up I was cruising along with over 110 on the speedo for god knows how long before I noticed.

Anyhow, here it is:

I have noticed though that the radiator fan is not working and there is a small leak coming from the cooling system somewhere (as in a couple of tiny drips). This seems to be coming from a pipe going into the radiator itself so I have tightened it and will see if it stops.

Its not overheating but when I set off from cold, it is getting to the middle of the temp gauge very quickly. Wondering if I should get a new thermostat, but did read that these are designed to get to running temp quick?

As I don't want to bork it with no fan, I took the Visa to this place in Ponte Carlo this morning that is a Jag breakers to pick up a radiator fan relay. As I had driven all this way I thought I may as well get a fan too as it would save any hassle getting one at a later date if I needed one (although on the way back I thought, its got 2 fans 'innit so must be a problem with something not setting them off -durrrrr).

I think that the 2 chaps working there must have spent the whole of their lives munching temazepam. They were barely understandable.

'I have come to get a radiator fan relay for an XJ8'

'Mmmmmph brumph hunrrrr Mmmmgh'

'A radiator fan relay?'

'orphuruuuh phureur'

I guessed he meant over here so followed him to an XJ8. He opened the bonnet and pulled out the 2 relays at the top.

'I am sure its underneath the car behind the bumper, the radiator fan relay mate'

'Nurrrrrrrgh, tis urgh thesurghns, uuuugh'

Okay, I thought, 90% of everything you do is break XJ8s, you know better then me, all I have done is have a look on some forums so let him lead the way. So I left with these relays and a complete fan.

Get home and the brain dead twat has only given me the bloody windscreen wiper relays. WHAT AN IDIOT. I could understand it if it a breakers yard with 400 different types of car but FFS YOU ONLY DEAL WITH JAGS. At least know what you are going on about.

So I am still here with no relay. Have ordered one of Ebay but will be ringing them asking for another on Monday.

But even so I am happy with my Waftomatic luxobarge. Hopefully it will give me many miles of happy motoring.
