Car crusher in action (Crystler Neon content)

Someone asked me fairly recently what the crusher looks like in action, and how long it takes to bale a car.

So, the other day I videoed it. For the record, it's about 2 1/2 minutes from car to cube.

Hahhaa! I love the way the rear number plate doesnt apear to have moved or broken.

Lovely! Enjoyed the melancholy soundtrack as well, very appropriate

Not as exciting to watch as the industrial shredders. Is that you plucking the strings Scary?

It is - I'd been filming for about 5 mins waiting for a clear start to finish shot that didn't have traffic or autofive passing across it and I got a little bored so I got the guitar and started to play along.

I think the HSE would blow a gasket if anyone tried that for real rather than as a product demo! Next stop for the baled cars is the fragmenter at Blaydon-on-Tyne (basically a huge and ancient version of the thing eating the dodge)

Great soundtrack and one less Neon - what a bizarrely soothing video!

I couldn't make it out from the video, do you remove the engines before cubing?

Neons were so shite. Briefly had one that came from a shipment supposed to have been sold in Japan but sold to UK Chrysler employees instead with no warranty as cars had been sitting in japanese dock for years. White paint and maroon leather...nice. It died after a few hundred miles, got rid.

Far as I can see, engines are only removed if they are worth selling on or someone bought it while the car was in the yard. The neon went through whole.

That's interesting. There was a photo of a cubed car on MacDroitwich a while ago which spurred a discussion about whether the engine goes in or not (on the basis an engine won't compress).

Yeah, but it doesn't have to. The crusher is just to reduce the volume of the car so it's easier to transport to and feed into the frag.

Dunno about the Neon but 99% of the time engines are removed as they are made from stuff like cast iron and ally, which is worth quite a bit when removed from the car and scrapped seperately. A baler will have no problem crushing a car with the engine still in however, the "cube" will end up being a bit bigger though.

They always used to, but recently I've noticed that everything goes in whole unless it was already engineless - maybe the difference in price isn't worth the extra time/fuel any more.

Right, I KNOW I have seen a scrappy somewhere in Birmingham where the surrounding walls are made of baled cars. I'm 90% sure I didn't imagine it.

F8ck me, I grew up in Blaydon but not been there for years - where is the frag machine?

Blaydon metals (now EMR Blaydon) is on factory road... it's down past the level crossing right by the Tyne.

That kinda sounds like the Custard Factory in Digbeth.

Bonus footage time - I reviewed the video and decided that the rest of it wasn't THAT bad, so I uploaded it anyway.

Warning, contains swearing and loud belching (thanks autofive!)

It isnt a scrappy, well, at least it isnt now, its a public carpark. Digbeth used to be depressingly industrial. Sadly it has now been taken over by 'arty farty' 'uber cool' wanker types now.

Ah crap, could really have done with the drivers side mirror from that Suzuki before it went in the bin, some toerag kicked one off the Alto me and a mate are tarting for sale and I've had no joy in finding one for what I'd consider reasonable coin.

Always enjoy watching this kind of stuff in local yards though shy away from filming most of the time as often a camera isn't well received!

I see a few Metro and MK1 and MK3 Fiesta wheels in that lot
