Station Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 Later K-series had six bolt manifold-to-downpipe flanges, the earlier ones had four bolt. They will be seized, but they come out OK.Cat bolts won't come out, you'll have to cut a bit out of the edge of the cat flange and hammer the tapered bolts out, and then use new nuts/bolts.You'll know if it's HGF, it'll overheat after running for 20 minutes, you'll definitely have emulsification in the oil (dipstick is a sure sign) and you'll get a ton of steam from the exhaust.EML light could be one of the sensors on the throttle body - or it's probably the coolant temperature sensor on the coolant elbow on the front side of the head on the exhaust manifold side. I think it's the brown plug. I'd do what Ash says and do the MLS gasket change now before you overheat properly as this will certainly warp the head or block and turn the engine into one more K-series-Kasualty. They are really good, revvy engines that you never tire of, under-rated cars thanks to dinosaur English motoring press.

SambaS Posted May 30, 2012 Author Posted May 30, 2012 You're very right the cat nuts wouldn't come off... well one snapped the bolt or stud or whatever it's called thankfully. The other I attacked with an angle grinder! I won!

SambaS Posted May 30, 2012 Author Posted May 30, 2012 Thank F. for that! Lancaster will insure it for £236 a year. I was getting angsty then! No idea why they quoted me for a 2001 car on a classic policy though!!

Craig the Princess Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 A Maestro Turbo is £177 per year fully comp. Juding by the MG ZRs I've seen driven around (espically barried up) I can see why the ZR is a higher risk. But generally Insurance Companies are wankers.

dollywobbler Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 Why would you go there? Rover 75s/ZTs are still depreciating. You could get a working one for comfortably less than a grand (especially if you're not fussed about having a saloon). There's no point in dragging a shonky one out of a scrapyard! As for insurance. MGs all seem to count for classic insurance. I bet you could insure an MG6 on a classic policy. I wonder if the equivalent Rovers can be had on classic policies? It's daft.

SambaS Posted May 31, 2012 Author Posted May 31, 2012 I wouldn't go out looking to buy one. The fact it's sat there looking sorry for itself, as usual, has made me want it!

dollywobbler Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 Learn to ignore that feeling, or you'll end up very skint and with far too many cars!
