My Volvo 66GL Estate (the Mushy Vee).

Thought you guys might be interested in seeing this.

I spent a couple of hours at the barn today where this little 66 is being stored and did some purely cosmetic stuff on the Mushy Vee as she is called. She cost the vast sum of £250 a couple of months ago.

Here is a little 'before' picture:

A bit sad and dusty isn't she.

Here are some 'inbetween' pictures:

003-19.jpg

004-17.jpg

An annoying dent showing the damaged wing repeater. Replacements to original spec are pretty hard to come by, so a couple of alternative one's will need to be found.

What lies beneath (front O/S sill):

And t'other side:

Slight hole at the N/S rear:

015-10.jpg

That seems to be it with regards to the underneath bits. Not too horrible to be honest.

The bit below the Ovlov badge is grotty (and the lip behind that as well) and will need fixing at some point.

A teensy bit of rust at the base of the rear pillar:

019-9.jpg

A scab on the rear O/S wheel arch:

024-9.jpg

Slightly tatty but otherwise solid!

Tank looks a bit sorry for itself, not sure about it's leak-proofness:

The front end looks solid enough but the various chips and stuff will need to be dealt with:

029-10.jpg

Oh look, shiney paint!

And after:

Bye Bye little Mushy. See you soon!

So there you go. The paintwork came up pretty well with a bit of cutting and claying. The stick on side strips will be coming off but I will need the services of a hairdryer for that. What does need doing appears pretty minimal, but with all this car and old, I have no doubt that other things will appear.

The wheels will need blasting and powder coating as well.

The interior just had a very basic wipe over.

Things that need doing:

I have the service items and a battery lurking somewhere, so that will contribute to getting her running at some point. She will need a set of wiper blades, an interior light cover, a bloody good vacuuming out and a good scrub. The drivers seat didn't want to tilt forward, so that will need looking at. Seat covers will be required as the vinyl has started to split/tear in places too.

The rear section of the exhaust needs replacing. The brakes will need an overhaul. I think the drivers window needs looking at and possibly one of the column switches might be kaput.

Not the end of the world and once on the road she will be an eye-catching and rather practical car.

Cheers

Ken

I remember back in the 80s on my road there used to a white 66 estate just like this. :D

Love it, especially in that lime green colour. Also liking the Terry Wogan Radio 2 sticker in the rear window!

Paint came up well ken. Did you do it by hand, what products?

Wow £250 seems like a bargain. They never seem to come up when I am looking  !!

I hope you are going to keep the t.o.g.s. sticker!!

The TOGS sticker is quite cool and fits the car well lol+++. I used Bilt & Hamber auto clay which now comes in two flavours I believe and Meguires cutting compound and the Autoglym Super Resin polish. Eclectic aren't I.

I know of a blue Volvo 66 saloon that might be for sale. It's not a minter but it is a good basis for a rolling resto perhaps.

Cheers guys.

That's brilliant, Ken. Doesn't look too bad at all and the TOGS sticker is the icing on the cake!

I love that, my dear old dad had a red 66 saloon back in 1980, I managed to write it off one Sunday morning

That is loverly is that. There was an estate on ebay a while back that was fetching strong money IIRC.

Scotty, if I get my greasy mits on a monkey in the near future your tues brown 44 can once again terrorise the citizens of Edinburgh!

Top buy Purple,

Have you tried Danny at DAF Hobby? He had some ovlov repeaters a couple of years back

Yes, they are all variomatics but the different models have either one or two belts. I had a 33 as well, lovely little thing. Quite toy-like.

There was indeed a green estate on the bay fairly recently but that was the 1.1, whereas mine is the 1.3. Not that it makes much difference in the real world but mine has the quad front light set up.

Danny is great but some of the stuff is a little pricey, especially when you factor in p&p. That's life though.

Thanks for the +ve comments folks :D

I do like these little 66's, particularly the saloon versions. Didn't they do them in quite a few lurid colours?

Glad to hear the side mouldings are going...they do look a bit crap. Congratulations on a superb little bargain!

Not bad at all, and comes up lovely. Is there a reason for ditching the silver side stripes beyond personal taste? I thought they were an original thing on these.

Posted

The unlikely/qaint mash-up of DAF and Volvo (Dafvo?) really works well as far as the 66 is concerned :)

Posted

The colour is very umm, eye catching isn't it. Not the kind of car to miss in the car park lol+++.

The wide silver stripes are original and will be staying, the plastic strips lower down are after-market stick on tat and look bloody awful. They will go.

Lovely! Two old Volvos saved in one day, and couldn't be much more different. Delighted. And yes, the TOGS sticker must remain!

I see which bit you mean now... I hadn't spotted those.

I love your 66. Such a nice car, especially in that green; which reminds me of this!
