Thought I'd update/amend this thread instead of creating a new one, I was stuck for somewhere to put a picture of what I've just found in Bedale. Also the aformentioned Horizon has gone.

My pals yard today...

A friends old Rover diesel in the foreground.

And here it is a little later after John removed the wheels and stuck it on the heap.

Tomorrow they will flatten it and keep stacking em up. I'm one of those that gets quite sad seeing this. As all the cars in my opinion have taken on personalities in a way. It isn't quite the same as I remember it when they were all Mk3 Escorts and MK2 Cavs and Talbots; now it's more Vectras and K11 Micras and the like, but still sad non the less.

I know how you feel mate. I hate seeing any cars go to scrap to be honest (except for the ones I dont like) alot of these cars still have a fair amount of life left in them, in fact if looked after they can often outlast thier owners. But of course we live in a throwaway society where we are encouraged to have and behold the newest because we think its the best.

Three cheers for our throw away society

Seeing that Rover going to scrap is particularly sad, especially after seeing the destruction of most of the old Longbridge plants :(

Posted

...and there's an R3, 2 HHRs and an R8 in the pile nearest the camera too :(

The Horizon was in a different yard, I've yet to speak to the owners.. I suspect as we got it going someone bought it, the owners son said it was in no danger of being squashed.

The Volkswagen Beetle was a welding accident so I'm told.

I though this would be a really good picture but wasn't paying much attention clearly!!

What the hell sort of crazy digger arm arrangement has he got going on there?

These pictures are typical of what I see these days, almost all of the cars that are in the scrapper are newer than mine, and more than I can afford :(

Posted

Madness aint it. That Hyundai was tidy enough last week.. The digger is a Hyundai too.

I think pics of yards like that look more wastefull than the pics of the scrappage cars on that old airfield, although the cars are there for the same reason though, fucked and/or unwanted.

I know these ARE everyone's cup of tea genrally, so on here these arn't likely to interest so much BUT.

It's a strange one this, I think it would be sad to restore it, and sad to squash it!

If I had land I'd like to stash it away... I nearly bought a Morris Minor 1000 when I was 17 in order to take advantage of some insurance policy that through the owners club, would have cost me £400 instead of the £1300 I paid for my MK5 Escort!

It is absolutely rotten.

Year of manufacture: 1970.

Smells old inside, it's a really nice place to be.

All things considered I still would, but I am not going to. Phew!

As I'm sure most people are aware, you can get pretty much any panel you need from one of the minor specialists- but the cars are not worth so much as for it to be a lot easier and cheaper to just buy a better one to start with. unless you actually enjoy welding.

You know you're a true shiter when scrapyards are full of cars newer than you own everyday motor

Went up LB Metals yesterday and there's all sorts of shite!

I'm tempted to squirrel away the Hyundai Coupe F2 or the 10,000 mile Kia Rio? All these cars work, some have an MOT. I would think £300-£400 would buy any one if anyone is interested.

An old school friend told me about this last week and said he'd get me a picture. It's in a yard in Scotland. Anyways turns out to be a bit worse that I expected:

I spot a Rover Sterling in this pic:

G520 VYR, enquiries say its a 1990 Rover Sterling last taxed in 2001. Do you know if works or anything? Couldn't grab us a few pics of it could you?

GEJ 464N, never my car but I used to clean it and stuff when I went to my Grandma's. It lived on the farm next door. I was all of about 11.

322_27648022991_6633_n.jpg

Mum's MK3. I used to like to think it was mine after she drove it to York with no oil.

322_27648027991_6874_n.jpg

The first car I paid money for (and the only one I have no picture of) was a Talbot Horizon in white, it was a special edition with some funky decal on the C pillar. I was driven up and down the scrapyard lane in it but someone smashed it up before it was dropped off at mine.

This MK2 Fizzle we did take delivery of, my next door neighbour and I bought it from his Dad, it started but there was no clutch.

322_27648037991_7234_n.jpg

Got this when I was 15 with the intention of driving it up at the quarry, wasn't fazed by having to drive on the road but it wouldn't fit in the garage and Mum went nuts at me and managed to persuade my neighbour to swap for his Charade Turbo.

322_27648042991_7501_n.jpg

322_27648057991_8051_n.jpg

Also bought this Rover. £60, Police didnt like me driving it at 15 though

322_27648052991_7807_n.jpg

My old Jimp next to my first car after I passed my test :D

11043_172844897991_1206944_n.jpg

After the Escort died of multiple collisions I got this:

322_27648077991_8908_n.jpg

And scrapped it within 2 months as it was an unreliable, quite frankly useless thing. (That I wish I still had)

Polo didn't last long

Charade CX Automatic and Mum's Rover Coupe

11043_172372347991_3316771_n.jpg

This got a ragging before i used it to rebuild the auto.

322_27648097991_9775_n.jpg

This was a mates Cavalier I had to borrow to commute to IBM in, avec spray painted yellow steel wheels.

322_27648102991_214_n.jpg

...because the mate who owned it did this to my Charade:

11043_172372387991_4538182_n.jpg

Which got scrapped a week later as the steering was absolutely shafted.

11043_172372317991_3226691_n.jpg

Next I tried to buy this MK5 Escort Si but the garage owner would not sell it to me for the £1000 I could afford...

11043_172372322991_4869449_n.jpg

So I looked in Auto trader and found this in Leeds for £650:

11043_172372392991_1992821_n.jpg

Then I had a break from driving (could you see that coming?) during which time I bought:

322_27648117991_823_n.jpg

322_27648122991_1185_n.jpg

322_27648127991_1523_n.jpg

322_27648132991_1861_n.jpg

In 2008 I swapped the above Saab 900 for this:

352_32003042991_5453_n.jpg

and still have it to this day. Yay. I'm much more careful with my cars, life and wellbeing these days!

Each year they have a Ford show at the Motel in Leeming Bar, which is quite convenient for me :)

Did you take those late on as quite a few gaps. I left around 3ish - I went in my mineral blue over silver 2.8 and my mate took his ex rally Escort mexico (he used to rally it in the eighties and I restored it for him a few years ago) my lad also took his red Polo mk2f (parked in the macdonalds car park) first time of driving on the motorway for him(insured last week at a stunning cost of £2200 !!!) we were parked on the back row a few cars down from that white mk2 fiesta you've taken pics of. In one shot you can just see the bonnet of mine in the distance.

I really enjoyed it but my mates escort if geared for hill climbs so he can only go at around 60ish on the motorway (blistering acceleration though) I was bored stupid following him in the capri doing 2200 rpm best fuel economy it's ever done though

I've had the capri 11 ish years now and it's the first year I've noticed more and more comments. great to get the capri out in some rare sunshine

Posted

Yeah I didn't venture up until about 2.30, I never know when this even is on, just someone usually ends up sending me a text saying have you seen all those old cars at McDonalds.

I got my beauty there in 2010:

30428_393275602991_5116359_n.jpg

Looking forward to getting it painted and a HUGE amount more presentable.

There were a couple of rougher cars there, I like to see them just as much but I can understand the guys who have spent £1000s getting a little pissed off with my wreck being there.

I did like the Capri with the red whale tail - he was only person who spoke!

I go most times it's on but that's the first time I've been in the Capri (did used to go in the Xr2 but the last time that was on the road was 2009)

I agree I like the old chod just as much as the blingstuff. My Capri was parked to the right of the white Capri / red tail fin. next to that American camper van. There was a shed of a 1.6 LS parked next to mine.. I'll make a point of letting you know next time a go and can have a chin wag !!

Went up a local scrapyard to see what cheap cars he had in and found this:

01052013913.jpg

01052013914.jpg

Currently considering buying it, the clutch is siezed, and the sills are rotten. Should be cheap, wants to be no more than £500 IMO

He's getting back to me with a price.

These are also for sale:

Volvo 480 Coupe (1990ish) been sat years but looks okay in red. In region of £300 I should imagine.

Vauxhall Calibra £495, some MOT still, 2.0 red top but engine "quite tired"

01052013915.jpg

Toyota MR2 In region of £800 if I remember rightly

01052013916.jpg

Peugeot 405 Mi16 £895
