Yo Samba, if you’ve got no job and no money to heat the house I would give that a wide berth, I love cars and all that but you can’t save any cars at all if you have frozen/starved to death

Today I focused my attention back onto this:

07042013472.jpg

I found there were a lot more things to do to it than I remembered.

My foot pump died of exertion so I had to take 3 wheels off and drive them up to the local pay for air thing. And stick some petrol in a can as the car had ran out.

Put the wheels back on avec air and put the juice in and she... had a flat battery. So swapped the one from the Style and VROOM - life!

Next the jobs I knew I had to do for tomorrows (hopefully) MOT.

The hazards worked on the right side only. The indicators worked both sides. Strange. Turned out to be some dodgy wiring from the switch. This car is full of dodgy wiring!

The the side light on the right didn't work, that was a bad earth which I managed to trace fairly quickly. Bit of a roll today.

Found the battery clamp and fitted that.

Fixed the K&N base plate to the carburettor and now that's on a bit better than it was before.

I found a slight coolant leak from the top hose to the water pump, I tightened the jubilee clip and will have to keep and eye on it.

I found the washer bottle that still wasn't refitted, MUST source a new pump for the original system tomorrow as I bodged an Opel Manta pump and bottle on last year in haste for the previous MOT.

Then I properly screwed down the rear seats, a job I never got round to doing prior to it's last MOT, and fitted the rear seat belts.

Gave the number plate lights a whack.

Took some rubbish to the tip from my final garage, now that's ready to hand back. Took some other rubbish the neighbors kindly left strewn about the place to the tip in another run.

And I think that's about ready. Just have to buy insurance tonight. Then ring up Bilwoods in the morning.

Oooh and I went to a Ford show as well today, I'll put those pics up on another thread. MMMMMM Fords Probes!

Hope the sun comes out for you Edd.

What's the plan then? You buying some tax then bringing her across country on Sunday? (When (if) she passes this week.)

Posted

Unfortunately, even if it passes I wont be able to afford to TAX it in time for Sunday.. And I really wont trust the clutch until I've done a fair few miles in it! Would be great though.

Reason for refusal of test certificate

001 Offside front (rear mount) Subframe prescribed area is excessively corroded.

The holes are in the drivers foot well and circled, I can see filler so this will probably turn out to be worse than it looks.

All in all though I'm pleased :P

Je commence maintenant.

J'ai deux semaines, ou je dois payer à nouveau pour MOT.

Mais .......... Pas de problème!

Import Mr Bollox?

It's really not as bad as I was expecting under here, also turns out the floor is double skinned.

Rear right hand footwell, the worst bit of the upper level floor pan.

Left hand rear footwell:

Bulkhead is solid on both sides, now I can paint the bit I welded from the inside too:

There is definitely rot in the A pillars, although it seems to be the upper pillar as opposed to the door hinge area.. unlike the Style.

Well that's me for the day. Until I get some cutting disks. Going to chop out the bottom layer of rotten metal, some of the 2nd layer maybe and treat everything else and weld a nice plate to cover the hole.

There are 3 layers of metal in this part of the floor, also the chassis leg.

1. Bottom layer of floor (Fukt)

2. Internal strengthening bit (rotten, cant really justify making up this part this time round it's quite a complex shape)

3. Top level floor pan (pretty sound in this area)

Will have to grind off a few old repairs.

As for the interior I will throw a Hydrate 80 grenade in, then pant it and job done.

Not sure what to do here at the min, it's off the scope of the MOT, there is another layer of floor underneath this one that's quite sound. Ideally it want's cutting out and plating.

I intend doing a full nut & bolt restoration on this in the future, so at the minute I don't really mind not fixing everything. Just treating it and painting it, so it doesn't get much worse.

Please excuse my child like drawings i only have MS Paint at the min... this is the plan:

547765_10151408485287992_306033775_n.jpg

1. Cut back the outer skin to good metal, easy peasy.

2. Treat internal part with Hydrate 80, possibly cut off any bad bits (this is where I skimp on fabricating a whole new bit as the panel is 3D and I don't have the tools or skills).

3. Weld big plate over it

4. Treat and paint inner floor from inside car. Put back together.

5. Take for retest

6. Treat and paint underside

That sound about right?

Brilliant picture Joe, looks like she's under hard accelleration as the front's well high!

Posted

Ta!

Hard acceleration? Well, as hard as a one litre Samba ever could, up a 1:4 gradient!

We're awaiting today's Cabriolet welding report... did you* make much progress?

(*Steve)

Primered the internal floor pans, chopped out rust (last week) treated and painted everything that is going to be behind the plate on the underside, cant see any reason it wont be done tomorrow. Booked retest for 3.30pm Monday

Nice work yet again SambaS. My old Style had a rust hole in the middle of the passenger door pillar. I sprayed it with spray grease to help stop it getting any worse. Which in the 5 years I had it thankfully it never did. An it never failed on it etheir. The only welding it ever had in my ownership was on the passenger rear suspension turret. By the time the garage finished cutting the rot out you could put a bag of shopping through it!That was after only passing the Mot only 2 weeks before an then I drove it from Tamworth to Newquay for a Holiday to meet up with some mates with my brother.[be 10 years this August] I don't think my Style had ever been out the Midlands in it's life till then. Did the business all Holiday without fuss an ever got a group of ladies dressed in nurses uniforms flash me when I beeped them. :D

Hope the Cabriolet passes the Mot Monday.

Cabrio passed today..

YAY, time to change the thread title! Is this gonna be your daily for a few months now?

Once it's TAXed, God I've missed it! It's so good with a working clutch and the induction noise is ace.. And it makes little pops and bangs on over run! So pleased. I have many threads to update but it's slow pro on my mo pho.. also o2 wont let me use postimage.org to host pics, it's asking for age verification since I changed my number. And the other pic hosting sites are wank on a mobile.

Have you got Wifi up your house? Could bring my laptop I've just been gifted. It's running Vista I'm well happy as it's ten times faster than the PC I use. And it has a well stocked itunes! *PROPER UPDATE WILL FOLLOW*
