I had a few very late Dinkys too including the Burmah Foden tanker and the TK bin wagon, plus that 109 S3 Landy fire engine that made a great weapon to twat my older brother with, I also had that MG Maestro Corgi with working lights, that big airport tender that fired water, and a Plymouth/Dodge fire engine that had a working siren from a 9v battery, I had a huge hoover box full of my umpteen hundred toy cars in playworn nick, plus a fair few Tonkas, including a huge 3 axle fire truck with working ladder.

I can still remember my Tri-Ang Zephyr pedal car getting luzzed on the back of a Thames Trader dropside during one of my parents' frequent "clear-outs".   Fucking hell, no wonder I'm warped.....

Im lucky mine never did stuff like that intentionally :(

Oh off topic but i went to the NEC british motor show in 2000 and got loads and i mean 4 or 5 massive bags full of brochures even a branded lolly for the BINI Launch! They all got thrown :( :( :(

Also i know im waffling.. But bare with me acolytes of shite.

Ive got some doubles of some older hotwheels not shite exactly but the police escort cosworth, The white countach above and a few other bits..

Im not saying make this thread like bumtree but how about a SWAPZ kind of thing? where we both post each other a diecast? Good way for shit to find a nice home and expand the collection?

Has anyone actually found the golf county in poundland? I'm thinking its just not filtered through yet.

Nice lot there Laser_Foo, I would never have forgiven my parents if they had given all my diecast away! Thankfully I still have all my early stuff however theyre totally uninteresting Corgi Juniors and Superfast stuff which have sentimental value only.

I think I mentioned that they are hovered up by greedy bastard 'collectors' who use them to orchestrate a trade which is grossly biased in their favour. I flat refuse to even acknowledge these cretins.

This talk of parents binning cars reminds me that one year the Blue Peter Appeal was to collect toy cars, presumably for scrap metal, and every week they showed boxes full of old diecasts. I'm sure I cried seeing thousands of desirable Dinkys and Corgis getting shovelled into skips.

As for my childhood cars, as the oldest of 4 boys , they got handed down and played with until, literally, the wheels fell off. Luckily my Grandma kept a box of my Dad's old Dinkys, which I now have.

Some of the Blue Peter stuff did get pulled out for auction - I remember them showing some pre-war Dinky stuff on the programme.   But, yeah, tons of it got smelted.  I sent them a knackered Corgi Thunderbird amongst others that thankfully my mind has blanked out.   This was for the Offshore Lifeboat appeal I think and they ended up buying four inflatables including one for Littlehampton.

On another subject, that of greedy bastard collectors as referred to by Mr Pin there was a bloke at the local boot fairs who used to spend his week trawling the shops and other boot stalls for stuff and mark it up on his own stall every Sunday morning.   Personally, I didn't begrudge him other than the fact that he wasn't actually building up his own collection but I won't forget his face when I taunted him with a Beale's-liveried Matchbox removal van found for 50p two stalls from his own one morning.   Could have Ebayed it that day for £80 or so but I still have it and its not for sale!

There's a dealer I use, he's been quite reasonably priced for stuff. I suppose that way he gets repeat business. The ones charging a fortune always go out of business quite quickly.

The folks buying up these Golfs can't be making packets, some of them at as cheap as £3 plus postage. Deduct a quid off that and then eBay's fees then they are making fuck all. I suspect the ones in poundland are 2016 issue ones so might need a bit of patience before they're a common sight.

Idea of a swap shop sounds ace.

That Blue Peter appeal led to the formation of Pirate Models, who went on to be a big name in the model bus kit world and are still in business but now owned by a greedy chap in Kent who charges the earth for not very good kits. Two guys realised some of the toy cars donated would be too valuable to scrap so they volunteered to sort them out for auction. A lot had missing parts and they set up Pirate Models to make reproduction bits, so named because they didn't have Dinky's permission although Dinky approved and actually directed customers asking for spares to Pirate. They got into the growing bus kit market in the early seventies and the Dinky spares side of the business eventually faded away, but thanks to their efforts the Blue Peter appeal made a lot more money by auctioning the valuable stuff instead of just melting it down.

I can see Peter Purves on his hands and knees rummaging through a box of Dinkys, taking all the decent stuff home. Shitehawk.

I don't actually think he was in it then!   This was, I believe, in the period between him joining and Christopher Trace leaving Val and John Noakes to it.

Returning to the stories of parents giving away your cars, mine never did that but my mum stopped me getting some more years ago. My elder cousin was an only child and thus had many cars that he kept in good condition and which I of course always coveted. One afternoon my mum and I visited her mum and my aunt was there with a box of my cousin's cars which she was going to donate to a charity which would send them to Africa. I of course voiced an interest in having them and my aunt said that I could have the lot for 30 bob, that's £1.50 to you youngsters. I was okay with that but my mum then stepped in and said that they should be free as we're all family and she wasn't going to give my aunt any money for them! I said I was happy to raid my moneybox but my mum stuck to her guns and wouldn't let me have them. That was the last I saw of them and I'm not sure that I have ever forgiven my mum or aunt for not letting me have them, been around 50 years now, lol.

What were they going to do with them in Africa?   I was always puzzled by this vague parental threat of stuff being sent there.....

The pickings were slim indeed, probably because the event was overshadowed by the NEC.

Anyone got a screen and steering wheel for it?

On the subject of disappearing diecasts.. My old man had TB In the 60's as a kid and he got put in isolation and the special ward and all that lark, He used to always tell me about the time he lent a full box of dinkys to a kid on his ward who promised to return them :( only the sly little shit didn't re appear the next day and obviously planned the dinky theft! Could of ended up a politician!

Who wouldn't be seething even at age 6?!

I think one of one of the late Eighties reissues will fit, steering wheel too.

You know, these:

They were largely made from the original moulds.

Those can be had cheap, should I not have a shonky one still kicking about somewhere.
