Parts dept in my local Renner Main Stealer. I always got parts from independent factors as could not rely on Renner to get them to me quickly - according to the same dealer Renner UK do not hold a UK based parts distribution centre - all has to come from France

Your dealer is talking bollocks then. As Renomad says, there is a UK parts distribution place. Some of the more obscure and older stuff will have to come from France - it all does ultimately - but they are usually pretty quick. I ordered a front anti roll bar for my 26 year old van, not only was it still available but it arrived within five days.

oh and the fact that Renner does not stock parts or tech support cars older than 10 years old

Don't know where you heard / imagined that but it is WRONG.

As someone who still buys parts for older stuff direct from my Renault dealer I reckon I know. Theres plenty of stuff still available for even really old stuff direct from Renault and the older models are very well supported. Certainly a lot better than Ford for example.

They're a nice thing those Meganes though. At least when they are sorted anyway.

I ordered two 18 backboxes from Renault - five days from France. Trim is obviously difficult and so are some hoses (but stuff for a 1984 Renault 9 arrived), but I think Renault have done a fairly good job in keeping stuff alive.

I've NEVER known a Megane to rot there. If the rear arches start to go then they will go there, but that scuttle is odd. Unlike the 2.0 Ide engine the one in yours was pretty reliable. Pity as the Ide was absolutely fantastic - but extremely fragile.

That's top work. I would have been happy with the welding but that dashboard would have got chucked over the other end of the garage and the car set on fire. Don't have the patience for that kind of shit. Well done.

Re the fuel issue. Sod worrying about passing out. Its evaporation that's the problem. Have you seen the price of fuel.

I once drove an Imp back from Reading to Worthing with fuel pissing out the carb and burning on the engine. Car was filling up with smoke but not catching fire or owt. When I got home and started watching the bill I started hallucinating with sounds echoing in my head.

Good luck with the car anyhow. All of these that I have driven (3) have had heavy clutches so it could be right.

My Clio has a fuel gauge fault. First thought was the sender unit but there's a cautionary note in the Haynes manual about exactly what you said. Any interference can cause the tank to distort and write itself off. I've since discovered that the fuel light works so no longer a concern!

Those Meggys are ace. My aunt had a convertible in the same colour and interior but it was an auto! I say "was"... the box has since killed it.

Plus - first thing you did was BRIM your shite!???? Brave man, I've NEVER filled shite with fuel when I've just picked it up! I like to see whether or not it'll actually get home first!

Me too. I've got a new car now and still find it had to put more than £30 a time in it because of too many old knackers that have either pished the contents of their tank all over the forecourt or terminally chucked it with £30 deposited in the tank.

Indeed. 5 years ago I bought a new wing for a 1979 Renault 5 - nobody else had one. And 20 years ago, I bought 4 wings and 2 sills for a 1966 Renault 8 Gordini that my Dad and I rebuilt. Took about 4 days to come from France and they weren't old or dusty looking.

Re the Megane bulkhead - respect. I would have wired brushed and hoovered the worst flaky bits out before 'glassing over the whole lot and undersealing it for that '2 year repair' look.

Meganes rot like a bastard - sills, back arches etc. Clios aren't as bad and Lagunas are seemingly immune. If you want to see rot, look no further than Ford.

Although Mazda are more than competitive in that respect!

I think car makers have given up rustproofing the f**k out of cars like VW/Volvo/Saab used to, they don't want them to last more than 12 years anyway.

Fook you're kidding aren't you ? Especially in the case of the mk3 MX5s they're usually just as, if not worse, than the average mk2 even though they're half as old. Usually only 5 years old or so and the undersides are fooked, bolts seized in bushes, all sorts of nastyness.

Result! That was some epic repairing. They're nice cars to drive, not so nice to work on!

And on the other topic, I got exactly the same nonsense as Scooters, from the parts counter at Park's in Dunfermline, about them not supporting cars over 10y.o. I asked the guy if he was happy to lose a sale, he shrugged and gave me some lame crap about 'policy'.

Think you misunderstood me, Mazda are probably the worst now given Ford have given up the old Ka. Interesting about the Mk3 MX5, I'm looking at getting a Mk2.
