DIY studded tyres anyone?

What a fecking idiot!

I'm just amazed it wasn't until page 3 that someone pointed out that actually driving the thing would force the screws through the tyre resulting in a puncture!!

What a prat.

What a genuis. Totally lacking in humour too as he can't see people are ripping the piss out of him!

Jesus wept - I hope he's banned from breeding!

Been there, done that, slightly different context though :D

I leave the car at home and go off road when the weather hits up here in Scotland.

That guy is a willy. Aside from all the problems already mentioned, rubber tread can cope with snow. Ice requires a point, and he hasn't even achieved that.

Mind you, that is a pretty good summation of what the Fiat forum is like. Glad I sold my Brava, no need to visit now.

It may be technically illegal but surely if done in the interests of safety it has to be a good thing?

The stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze me.

To be fair there are quite a few people on here who are really knowledgeable. There are a lot of dingleberry retard chavs on here, but there are some decent people too :)

Funnily I was talking to someone the otherday about studded bike tyres and he mentioned that he'd done the same as you, only problem was they didn't last long.

Good grief, I really hope this guy is winding us up. If he's for real the mere thought of people like that being out on the roads is enough to make me surrender my licence.

The tyre is filled up with expanding foam! See on that basis it really is a good idea.

However I am going one step better, I am going to set fire to my tyres to melt the snow as I drive along.

I know I shouldn't tar folk with the same brush, I guess I just meant folk on Fiat Forum maybe aren't as knowledgeable as folk here. Or as sensible, evidently.

Those tyres have hundreds of miles on them - indeed I've replaced screws. Takes hours, but it is over £150 for a set of quality mountain bike ice tyres.

Nah I think the autoshite idiot ratio is as good as the Fiat forum - its actually a pretty useful forum.

I completely agree. I'm on FF myself (306maxi) and I think a lot of it is an age thing. You've got people on there who've just got their licence and seem to think that they know everything about everything. People on here have generally owned a few cars and know better than to do daft shit like that.

Then there are people on there who are very very competent people :)

Screws in treads seem a totally silly idea to me. However ... on those lines I do recall a pal using studded tyres on his Anglia in the 60's. These had studs bolted right through the (tubed) carcass. I believe that they were Michelin radials (although tread pattern looked like cross plys) and had done a Monte Carlo rally 1960 approx, and went on to be used many winters to come.

So what we're saying is that it is preferable to to be run over by a skidding car rather than the remote possibilty of being hit by a screw?

God help us, I'm so glad we have all these rules, if we didn't people might have to use common sense instead

All the "OMG Snow Tyre Chaos" folks should pop over to Club GTI where the original idea/posts were from.

It was posted to the Fiat forum for a laugh.

Studded tyres give fantastic grip on ice. But these aren't studded :D

Whatever will those Volks Folks think of next? Cars so low you smash the sump on slight contortions in the road? Maybe taking the paint off the car and letting it go all "naturelle"?

Everybody knows you should let some air out of your tyres for driving in snow, this looks like a pretty effective way to do that.
