Glad to hear it's been sorted. It's a 1.6 TDi you say? Try to track down last month's "Car Mechanics" magazine, and look at the Dealer's Diary section: specifically where the dealer's mechanic/machine shop/engine reconditioner mention the words "plastic" and "engine" in very close proximity to each other. Oddly enough, the 1.4 TDi is given the thumbs-up.

Yep it's a 1.6TDi, the 1.4 puts out about 68horses instead of 90(?), and is in the same VED bracket, and mpg difference is negligible. Anyways coming from a Pez 2.0 Fuckus, anything would be better than that!!

Cheers for the responses lads!!

Update from Outlaw_Retirement_Home

Fatha has filled the fucker up with unleaded

"I thought the nozzle wouldn't let me do that?"

:shock::roll::oops::shock:

Drove for a short distance - less than a mile, probably less than five minutes, at the sort of speed 71 year old blokes drive...engine switched off pretty much as soon as it started sounding like a bag of bolts.

Obviously i'm hopeful that it won't have done much damage; car has been recovered, and the tank is gonna be drained, lines flushed, oil and filters done.

Anything else I need to know?

The old man is obviously in the shithouse with Mutha_O, but to be honest, i think he's moar annoyed with himself than she is with him!

Any crumbs of comfort available?

Please?!

Oh dog's eggs.

Been sat here for half hour trying to source a crumb but not found any except you'll have plenty of shite fuel for lighting bonfires

May well be fine though for some reason I recall diesel in a petrol is the worserer one.

I know what it's like with aged parental units and such muck ups.

Tongue firmly bitten many times such as "I turned reversing sensor off as annoying".

Month old car reversed into something few weeks later.

Grrrrrr. It now remains on......

Just dont take it to the dealer, they will say not repair and insist on replacing every part of the fuel system. Expect a bill of between £4000 and £6000 (i've seen some invoices for BMw's touching £10,000 !

There are companys out there who will strip and clean the system for about £300

problem is the petrol dries all the seals out and the dealers scare you by saying metal swarf will be in fuel tank . etc etc etc however not every case will be severe to warrent all replacment.

Some insurers will allow you to claim for this damage although a lot are now putting a clause in to avoid this loss - I believe Swift cover do this. And if the dealer knows and it's not fully replaced they void any remaining warrenty..

Cheers chaps....it's not been taken to the Main Stealer, but to a small-ish, trustworthy garage in Basildon.

It got recovered late this afternoon, but it's unlikely that they'll be able to start any work on it until middle of next week.

No price has been quoted, but frankly, if the figure of £6k was quoted, i believe it would mysteriously catch fire somewhere.

We'll just have to wait and see, hopefully theres no lasting damage....

I think the only thing that is going to be painful might be the fuel pump as (so I've heard) Diesel being washed off the pump by petrol can cause much premature wear. But I wouldn't go through all the bollocks of replacing lines, injectors etc... Should* be fine to drain, clean, refit in reverse of removal.

Doh! Bit of a nightmare all round. Didn't Halfrauds sell some kind of buzzer warning thing to prevent this? Can't recall the details.

HI i do fuel drains quite often on these HDI engines as i work for the Orange mob,we come out and charge around £210 and it takes about an hour.

I've not known of any problems after a missfuel on these,BUT i wouldn't make a habit of doing it..

(Thinking about this what year is it as most late fords have an idiot proof filler neck, there is a flap in the filler neck that only opens when the correct pump nozzle touches 3 of its sides which a smaller petrol nozzle cant do.?)

Thats the best column in any magazine that is.

As for putting petrol in the diesel, don;t worry about it - I see it all the time. Get a respectable garage to drain it down, stick a new fuel filter on and chuck a bottle of additive in. Jobs a good 'un. Never seen any ill effects from such a mishap.

My mate done this recently in his 2002 Audi A4 TDi, He even tried topping up with diesel thinking it would dilute the petrol, It smoked like a fecker for a few days then died, He took it to a local garage who drained the tank and system down, changed the fuel filter, flushed it out and filled it up again with Derv, it's been fine since, although my mate got the arse with all the piss taking about his Bio fuel Audi.

In the bad old days, we used to slip a bit of petrol into a diesel to clean it out.

When I worked in breakdown recovery 10 years ago, we never bothered changing the fuel filters, and just drained the tanks and put a couple of gallons of fresh fuel in for them before sending them off again £125 + vat lighter.

If you run out of fuel on the motorway, never trust fuel from a can to be pump fresh from a recovery driver... If it smokes on fuel from a can and he follows you to the petrol station just in case you have any more problems, you’ve probably just been sold 2 gallons of contaminated fuel.

With most of us running old bangers that got left in the yard overnight when we took the trucks home when we were on call, we disposed of the contaminated fuel into our tanks mixed with an equal amount of fresh stuff. Bit of smoke on start up sometimes, but they ran fine once they had been left 15 min or so to warm up in the yard. I never had any problems running on a contaminated fuel mix with the emissions at mot time on my old k plate 820i.

Well, fingers crossed it'll be ok then...and i never have to resurrect this thread again!!

I used to run a V8 Land Rover on contaminated fuel. Like you say, a bit of bloke smoke and that was it.
