Ever fought this hard for a Montego?

There is a rather smart, bit crappy pictured VDP Monty on eBay. Onwards and upwards mate!

Thanks guys, and very true... I've been eyeing up that Vanden Plas. I think without the sentimentality attached, I'll be after a Hyacinth Bouquet style Rover 216 before a Monty.

Lord Sterling, as always you're a saviour. I'm actually over in brum from the 4th - 9th Nov so will hopefully grab a few bits off it then, and give this thread a quick update on how bad a state it's in.

Started up the Avantime after a month of hibernation today to make myself feel a little better. It seems driving around with everything open on a freezing autumn afternoon provokes even more open mouthed pointing and staring. I've missed it :D

Sorry for shite pic taken at a filling station. (Or it's second home)

I think the pic is brilliant, and an Avantime is 9327429374297 times better than a Montego. Even its shite credentials are better, because it was a complete flop commercially.

Aye. Very true. I think we're fast discovering here that early Noughties stuff that's entirely unloved is definite shite!

I love the Avantime! :D

Anyway, bad luck and I'm sorry to hear about the Monty. Never mind. At least you tried your best and indeed, full credit to you in doing so.

I know it doesn't come as much, if any, consolation but as I said before, it does look beyond economical repair unfortunately. By that I mean it'll probably bankrupt you in repair panels, welds and remedial work to any other damage it’s sustained whilst in the scrap yard. Then of course all the time it would take.

Are you allowed to take any bits off it for sentimental reasons? Badges, number plates e.t.c…? If you're that attached to the car, I don't really see why you can't. Maybe salvage one of the front seats and fabricate a frame for it and turn it into a desk chair or something…?

Cheers, I wasn't quite sure of how accepted the Avantime would be within the shite community, so this comes as good news!

Perfect. Badges, number plates and the instrument cluster will hopefully be coming out of it soon. The drivers seat has had 24 years worth of old man arse so I'm not sure how salvageable it will be, but nice idea!

But the passenger side hasn't.

Think laterally youth!

Thought of this thread while scanning some negatives tonight. I found my version of the Montego scrap yard photo.

It's how I spotted my grandfather's Escort a few months after he sold it. No longer lovingly cared for, bumpers bashed, interior a mess and the badges torn off. I desperately wanted to save that car, it felt like I needed to save it. What a horrible feeling being 13 and knowing there was absolutely no way I could.

I remember finding my mums old Morris Ital estate in a scrapyard at the Merry Hill centre in Dudley. I was 11 I think! I went home and cried when the yard owners refused to let me buy it. Miserable bastards wouldn't even sell me the numberplate! The site was compulsory purchased and turned into a coach park soon afterwards. That gives me some comfort.

Fair play for even thinking about it, I have been in there many times  It was for the best that it was not to be but, you could try and find a similar one for a lot less it would have cost you 8) I used to have an E reg Si that I bought salvage and it went well.

Well it's officially over! Visited the scrapyard while I was in Brum this weekend and saw for myself what a state the old girl was in. The car had been de-polluted and the DVLA informed of it's death. The owner said it drove into the scrap yard though :(

Not trying to be negative but i think the scrappy did you a favour in not selling you that montego.

Yeh, me too now that I've seen it.

Hey Luke, which scrappy is this? Did you not get the rear lights? I can get them for you if you want, they are mega rare things. If not I'll get them for myself and chuck them onto my spares lot.

Hello! To be honest I didn't notice a name, in fact I don't think it has one. It's on Spon Lane South in West Bromwich, hidden down a lane beside the canal and just under the M5. Here it is:

I didn't know the lights were worth taking. You have em, you'll probably need them before I do, but I'd appreciate if you could get the number plates while you're there (if you go). I completely forgot about those and now I'm back in Belfast :?

Brill, only a few streets away from where I (occasionally) work. Might try and go down in a few days, I cant see there being a huge demand in Montego rear lights. I'll try and get the plates if I can, though it might be a bit difficult.

Excellent. No it's not a priority at all, I got the dash which is what I really wanted so anything else is a bonus. They look original so they've probably become part of the car anyway....

Do give me your verdict on the car though!

I think your effort to save this car must be commended. Shame you couldnt but at least you bits to remember it by. Oh and as for the Renault Avantime...........personally i think they are stunning and im so jealous.lol. One day i really hope to own one.

Cheers dude, they've come down rightly in price, I've seen a few go on ebay for £1200-1500 so you could be closer to owning one than you think :D You wouldn't regret it!!
