The Scootest: Tools, Toys and keepers.

When talking about justifying cars,

split into three types - tools, toys and keepers...

tools - no sentimentality involved, minimum expenditure to run, disposable, sensible, reliable daily chod

toys - unreliable, wacky, daft, rare, expensvive t run etc

keepers - can be either of the above but are worth spending on and should not be sold as will be worth far more to you as transport, hobby etc then it is to sell it.

Suggest one tool per task required: ie you could have a tow car and a daily

Toys - got to be careful buying too many as resources are tied to the Law of diminishing returns

Ke[e]pers: doesn't matter how many but these are the ones your sweat and tears go into

Mine is somewhat pants, mostly due to space and £$£$ (and being the only driver in the house)

TOOLS: N16 Almera

TOYS: Import NA MX5

KEEPERS: er.. Nokia 3210? Possibly the NA, but if the sills get much worse, I'll just swap it out for a cleaner one - prices are through the floor despite the stupid scene they seem to be gathering.

I haven't forgotten about a Camry either, I just can't justify buying one whilst the N16 is still working.

Rather than fill up Mr _M's thread with our own (There's a lot of decisions to make there!), can you apply this test to your own fleet, or do you use some other justification schema?

OK, here's mine:

Tool: '04 Mondiesel. I do a lot of miles for work and often need a large 5 door car for carrying people/ taking crap to the tip, etc. Should it ever die (it has a DMF so, no matter how well I look after it, I can't rule it out) I will replace it with something similar and estate shaped, for an extra dose of handiness.

Toy/Keeper: Ford Cougar V6*. I used to have this as a daily driver, but using it for work was costing me money. I couldn't bear to sell it, so I kept it. It owes me nowt, and still sounds pretty good and puts a smile on my face.

* Stop sniggering at the back.

In the current fleet...

Tool: Brava pickup. Carries or tows anything and everything, shame I have to sell it. It's so bloody useful!

Tool: Mazda 323F, if I ever manage to make anything happen with it. The wheels never appeared.... But, once recommissioned, it should make a perfectly acceptable daily.

Toy: Granada. Come on, who can justify a 39-year-old V6 these days?

Toy: X1/9, obviously. Can't be anything else, can it?

Keeper: A40. This is supposed to be the car I would have built when I had my first one, at 19, if I'd had any money then. Problem is, I haven't any now either. But it's a sentimental journey for me, and when completed I do want to enjoy it for some time.

Tool. 2006 Focus Ghia. 1970 Land Rover 109 Diesel.

Toy. 1970 Land Rover 109 Diesel.

Keepers. 1970 Land Rover 109 Diesel. 1961 Land Rover 109 Petrol Ex-MOD. 1983 Land Rover 109 Petrol Ex-MOD. 1989 Sierra Sapphire 1.8L.

Basically my 1970 Land Rover is my go anywhere, do everything vehicle. I go to work in it, I pamper it, and go to shows in it. It's a shed. But it's MY shed.

(Scorpio Cosworth now gone :( )

Tools - Laguna RXE. The tow bar sealed it's fate as the abused old dog of the fleet

Toys - Renault Avantime. 19 MPG assures the experience is kept rare and special

Keepers - Mégane and R25. Meggy must be the most pampered one in the country, deservedly so, she had nearly every option box ticked when being ordered. The 25 resurrection mission has yet to commence!

At the moment I am down to a single car, and that'll have to do for all three categories. Will be looking to add a toy in the near future (depending on the job/money situation, a 504 Coupe/130 Coupe or something cheap and French from the 1980s). I guess the Scorpio is in pretty much GR9 condition, so, despite the odd bill here and there, it'll have to be a long-term keeper irrespective from any additions to the fleet.

Tool: Saab, but I want something better. Or just different.

Toy: Range Rover. Can't be justified. Hoping to flog it this week. BX fits into this category I s'pose, though I hope it'll be a useful tool and it might be a keeper...

Keepers: 2CV as I'll never sell it, Mini as I'm unable to sell it. They do make a nice pair I must admit, and we've owned the Mini for over 5 years now.
