Ebay seller in truthful statement shock

Remember the Subaru SVX I bought last weekend? It was out of T&T, but the eBay listing contained those immortal words "will pass an MoT". Usual thoughts went through my head, "if I had a quid for every time I've seen that on an eBay ad" etc. Seller's excuse for not MoTing the car is that he'd just moved house, didn't have the time to run it in for a test and didn't have anywhere to keep the car even if he did MoT it (this at least proved to be true when I went to pick it up). To be honest, though, I've wanted an SVX for so long that I would have bought it anyway even if it did need work, and it was cheap enough that I wouldn't have minded spending a bit to get it back on the road.

So I ran it in for an MoT this morning, and bugger me if the old crate didn't pass first time. There would have been an advisory on slight weeping of transmission fluid and very minor exhaust blow, but I was there at the time so the tester just pointed it out to me rather than doing an official advisory. It's solid as a rock underneath too, and still has metallic grey paint on the inner sills and jacking points. Rear tyres are almost new Bridgestone Potenzas - new enough that they still have the little bobbly bits on the sidewalls. It went straight through the emissions test as well, and HC and CO were way below the limits - not bad for a big engine with 192K on the clock.

So now it's all tested up I can concentrate on doing the odd little bits it needs (aircon could do with a regas for one), and then run it around for a while and decide whether I like it enough to fork out for a full cambelt service, which is going to be due soon and probably won't be cheap...

I say, what a result! Pictures please.

If the belt on other Subarus is anything to go by, it'll be a piece of piss.

Well done on SVX result.

Aye - longitudinal engines are far easier to change belts on generally than transverse. As long as you don't need to do something daft like remove the rad...

I shall echo the call for more pictures and offer my congratulations!

sume really helpful vids on youtube - most scoob engines are similar to this:

here's a 2.5 change - tells you how to reset tensioner and also some good tips re pulley order, belt route and how to set the marks so that when you put the pulleys back on the marks settle into the right place
