Scally Rally Ireland 2011 (Pic heavy)

Just back from this excellent annual event and thought I'd share some pics with all of you shiters.

The shite was in full flow, and not just the Scally cars, the Irish seem to have a fetish for tat.

First of all, our car. A 1995 Rover 214 SLi with 69000 miles and modelled on a Buick Roadmaster

Inevitably, it shat itself. Twice.

Other Scally cars:

Volvo 940 Diesel with 263000 miles.

I LOVED this: A 2.5 Auto Omega modelled on an NYC Cab

Shite owned by the Irish population now. Only a few. Anything with a boot seems to sell really well. Small cars like the Focus, Mégane, Corolla and Almera seem to sell much better as a saloon. As a result, the new Renault Fluence is EVERYWHERE

Nissan QX V6

Desperation to see a Vel Satis got to me.

PICT5999.jpg

We did, however, catch an Avantime for sale in Cork

Other notable spots without pictures included a few Safranes, a mark 1 Espace and the odd 19.

And for pure SHITE value, I took this:

Some top Banger rally shite there, loving the Micra and the Mondeo. Romania bound in Montego saturday...

Eurgh. Do people ever do these things without ruining all the cars in a 'hilarious' manner?

And do they actually think it's some sort of achievement to drive a few hundred miles in a 12 year old car? It's hardly a challenge is it?

Some GR8 pics there. Have a go yourself the next time with a car from Ballyclare Sheepshagger Auction with "Keep her lit!" painted all over it. Baaaallyclare Auction is GR32 - mucky burgers, iffy cans of beer, fake Rolex watches and some fit birds who'll go for a chap who has less than 3 eyes and 14 fingers. You'll frequently get a car that's dirt cheap and has been tuned by boyos who are into their quars (cars). Loaf Head Joe McKay got a servicable but rough Cav mark 3 SRi from there about a year ago for 80 notes. Once he got the cow shit off it/out of it it did him for a good while.

Nice one.

Is the cougar;

A) Being far too ironic for me to understand, or

B) Overtly religious in a horribly in-your-face way?

I don't understand.

Gr8.5 pics, but I too have to say I get a bit bored by the inevitable permanent fancy-dress the cars end up wearing. It pretty much condemns them to the dustbin afterwards.

In short, no. I wish we'd got someone to sponsor our run up to P'boro. Would've paid for the burger king at least.

Out of (very limited) curiosity, what is the 'Mystery Machine' van? It doesn't look familiar to me at all, although this may just be because I pay very little attention to modern cars rather than any sign of its rarity.

Also, got any pics of the Granada hearse?

There's not much there I wouldn't have condemned to the Bridge of Doom before....

I'm sure I saw the yellow Omega on the M6 earlier this week....

True enough. In fact I'm a total hypocrite 'cos my mate and I are hoping to do the Ramshackle Rally next year. Planning to take a MK1 Nissan Prairie kitted out as a pub with working hand-pumps and a functional fireplace.

Mystery Machine van looks like a Mitsubishi Delica to me.

Hey Earl if you can actually find a Mk1 Prairie that isn't a rotten heap, please don't banger rally it! They are probably down to single figures now and I'm sure someone out there would actually save it.

I thought Delica but it looks like it's an actual panel van, not an MPV thing. Hard to tell with the windows painted over like that though.

I figured we'd have to save it first in order to rally it! Maybe we'll find something else square instead. Space Wagon, Space Cruiser. The possibilities are endless.

I just like Prairies.

Yes, I've done 4 in one allegro (still owned, can be returned to normal, needs a suspension diaplacer), my housmates Sherpa camper did one, that lives on after being sold to a carvan magzine editor after being returned to stock and I'm off to Romania on the rat rod rally on Saturday in another allegro which again can be returned to stock (but really needs a new wing from previous damage, it was like it when I bought it, and a respray after it was hand painted blue by the firend I sold it to before he gave it back).

But a lot of people do wreck shite so I can defend rallyers too much.

In one thread we have "Stick it over the bridge, dealing with mouthbreathers etc" in another "banger rally boys are scroats"

Think of it as an automotive Viking burial, saying that I'm hitching in one motor, repatriating a different on to come home in

What are you in Andrew?

Going in the Mongtego, bringing the bastard 216 GTI/SLi crossbreed bitza back. Unless a vehicular offer far better presents itself!

Sorry dude, didn't get a chance to photograph the hearse! It was a 2.8i Ghia. And they parked it outside of a funeral directors somewhere in Ireland which must have been a pretty horrific sight for anybody driving past.

The Mystery Machine was indeed a Delica! The only french car used in the rally was a Citroen Synergie. It didn't make it home.

The Metro is now for sale on Gumtree!

Done a few. First was an escort that was going to be scrapped and in the end drove it to Rome, had been sitting in someones drive for 8 months so was easy choice. The two cars we were going to take E28 BMW broke cambelt and destroyed engined and Saab 9000 caught fire 2 days before we left ! Ended up driving abck through Europe in an Eagle Limo (based on Carlton 1.8 gl with auto box!)

Second time we did it was resurrected 740GL which turned into a space shuttle and which we sold for a profit to a car dealer in Czech.

Most cars get done up but most of them are proper sheds. They would have been fragged sooner rather than later

The main difficulty I have in taking banger rallies seriously is that locally I know of a Lithuania-plated Moskvitch Aleko (early type from the mid/late 80s) and a Hungary-plated Lada 1200 (mid/late 70s roundlamp). I imagine most of the stuff going the other way would have had a better chance of making the trip, including charity convoys, but evidently they got here alright.

To me, it just seems like most banger rallies are an excuse for other people to fund them on a boozed-up jolly somewhere, justifying it with the fact that any excess goes to charity. I imagine some of them do put their own money in, but they could have just dropped it in a charity box if they felt that strongly about it. It is also possible to just drive an old car around Europe if you want, you don't even have to stick astroturf to it or dress up like The Golden Girls. What's more, you don't even need to appear in the local newspaper stood next to a late 90s Audi A4 making out you're some brave little soldier for driving to Spain.

Sorry to dull the mood, but that's just how I feel about just about everything done "for charity". These charities are quite happy to take your money without any real reason behind it, I'm pretty sure they don't require some kind of banger rally/bath full of beans/skydiving story accompanying the donation.

Posted

I've only ever seen them driving, whilst I've been driving - if I can find where that Aleko lives, I'm going to see if he fancies leaving it here for me to enjoy.

Both rallies I raised about £6500 + First year we sold spots like the million dollar website. Second year we got full corporate sponsorship. That all went to charities. One supported disabled kids in Bosnia. After NATO left there were alot of disabled kids left which families couldnt suport. This charity sent out phsyios and therapists to help. The big difference was that they then trained local people to do their job and went home.

All the costs of the rally plus all beer was on our shoulders (and we drunk a lot of beer) :D

Hirst, you aint meant to take a banger rally seriously!!! & what it costs to do you pay for yourself, donations to charity should be going directly to the charity. I've done one & will do more in the future, everyone pays their own way whether you're doing it for charity or (as we did right or wrong as we just did'nt get anything organised) you just do it for your own fun.

Anyone moaning about the loss of cars that could be used as a daily driver in this country should take a wander around any breakers as there's thousands upon thousands of decent cars just weighed in & cubed where as these cars get an international last blast out, the comment likening it to a Viking burial sums it up nicely. & not all of these cars do get scapped, we fetched ours back home & used it for a different event altogether the next year & I know some lads who've kept their last car & have redecorated it for this year.

Comments about it being no big deal to do a trip like this have some truth as we all know on here that a 15-20year old motor can be quite capable of such use but if something really old & different gets used which makes it more of a real adventure & risk there'll be loads on here who'd be ringing their hands at the loss of "something special", we cant win either way!!

We used an M reg 1.8 Astra Sport, bought for £70 & did 3500 miles through 5 european countries in a week which I do feel was a fair acheivment for both us & the car, my mate had never driven on the continent & I'd never been abroad at all!

But really explaining all this is pointless. It's bloody good fun, if you dont get that then you'll never get it!
