Yup - forst two letters are area code, except for Bucharest which is B. There's still a (very few) cars around with the old-style plates.

So:

Shonky Dacia 1304 pick-up, 1992

Posted Image

New but shit

Posted Image

Super-rare and mouldy early Dacia 1310 estate - only one I've seen in Romania although the later type, with the thicker rims round the headlamps, is very normal.

Posted Image

Government cars old and new

Posted Image

Battered Dacia

Posted Image

Metro - Brit tat is very thin on the ground in Romania

Posted Image

Jap crap, love the leaf litter

Posted Image

Dacia 1309, made from an estate and crafty use of a saw - amazingly this is factory-made.

Posted Image

Forgotten what this is, but it's Jap - Mazda?

Posted Image

Come to holiday on beautiful Black Sea Coast

Posted Image

Awful Alfa

Posted Image

Dacia - shite. Add to that general condition - very shite. Add to that that it's a mega-rare factory prototype - king of shite surely? (NB if this were in Britain, it'd be on a M reg....)

This is so truly bad it deserved many, many photos, which is what I took...

I really liked this Lancia

That blue Jap thing again, it says on the back what it is but I can't be bovvered

Posted Image

Yank Escort, as shite goes this is creamy indeed

Posted Image

Mk II Passat, very badly painted

Posted Image

Barkas with a special body

Terrible 5-series

Dacia Sport

Sorely tempted to buy this - 200 quid...

Crumbly Renault

Golf 4x4 bullshit thingy

General group of shite cars and houses - what a lovely country...

More on the way!

I saw a Dacia 4-door pickup thing in Aldershot a couple of weeks ago.It was LHD but UK registered on an 05 plate.I took a pic on my phone, but can't get it on the computer though

Posted

Posted Image

I love all of these!

How 'new' a car is the above? The rust on the rear arch looks quite bad for what looks like a fairly recent model?

Posted

95 to mid 98. The models of the late 90s were absolutely appalling on the rust front, this is pretty normal. That car is in an absolute world of pain - right in front of the Parliament, too.

Posted

Great selection of pics..

What's the deal with the boot/hatch on this? I thought they were a mostly glass type thing - this looks wrong?

Posted Image

Posted

How odd, my girlfriend wasn't impressed with the fact that they named a hotel after her in Romania...

The Dacia prototype is fantastic, only can only wonder why it didn't make it into production... sadly it doesn't look as if it will be saved for posterity :(Wonderful selection of shite as usual, Adrian.

A bit more...

Dacia 1310 Break, around 1992

Posted Image

No idea what this is (Jap) but it looked absurdly cool

Posted Image

I loved this down to the white wall tyres...

Posted Image

Posted Image

This was truly horrific...

Posted Image

Posted Image

But, in the background, you can just about see...

Posted Image

What must be some sort of a holy grail. Everything about this car is perfect. I want.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Trio of not-very-nice things

Posted Image

That glorious Dacia 1309 again

Posted Image

Ascona.

Posted Image

I wonder what the French would make of this... Dacia 1320, made from 1987 to 1990

Posted Image

VERY cool

Posted Image

Tidy Audi, quite rare too in this version I'd imagine

Posted Image

Bizarre advertising for a car wash...

Posted Image

Finally, this gloriously bad early Sierra.

Posted Image

And there's more ...

Posted

I came across the crusty Tagora and found it to be enven crustier than before. I doubt it'll see next year, so I decided to take a coupleo photos...

More disastrous Dacia tat

'Orrible R4 van

Nice Merc

Another Dacia 1309; all these weird variations still fascinate me

I'd have second thoughts about whether I'd really want to be rushed to hospital in this

Trio of shit - 2 Renaults 1 VW

Posted Image

Beetle, 500 Euro. But a wreck - rat look without even trying

Posted Image

This one was a lot nicer and was recently sold for double

Posted Image

Lateish Wartburg in gloriously tatty condition

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm221/Adrian_pt/DSCF3757.jpg

Another TV - or possibly Rocar, as it was known after 1990

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm221/Adrian_pt/DSCF3771.jpg

Barkas

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm221/Adrian_pt/DSCF3808.jpg

Very nice Dacia 1300, c. 1974, with wheels off the 1301 model, made only for Communist Party officials and only in black or (very rarely) white

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm221/Adrian_pt/DSCF3820.jpg

Trabi

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm221/Adrian_pt/DSCF3821.jpg

Another immaculately kept and very early Dacia 1300

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm221/Adrian_pt/DSCF3822.jpg

Two very, very special cars now: One of Ceausescu's old Mercs still doing loyal service. This was made to order for Zoe, his daughter

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm221/Adrian_pt/DSCF3823.jpg

Stunning Mercedes 170V, it was in daily use until recently and since then was very lightly reconditioned to give this beauty.

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm221/Adrian_pt/DSCF3825.jpg

Dead Skoda

Anotehr daily driver

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm221/Adrian_pt/DSCF3877.jpg

Not a Dacia 2000, sadly, but still a reasonably rare Renault 20. 2000s are far rarer...

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm221/Adrian_pt/DSCF3877.jpg

In between all the nouveau riche bollox, a 2-door Taunus - a rare sight these days

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm221/Adrian_pt/DSCF3881.jpg

Tatty Bus

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm221/Adrian_pt/DSCF3901.jpg

Finally, the old and the new in Romania. Sadly everyone seems to be throwing away the old, characterful, often very trusty and reliable older cars for brand new and rather bland cars. Probably a good thing practically speaking - some are dangerous wrecks - but still a great shame in my eyes.

Great pictures as usual - Thank you and keep 'em coming! If I for some reason obtain loads of money I want to go round the old eastern bloc and save these things from the scrapper. Maybe put them in a field to annoy neighbours in a posh rural district...

Posted

Superb stuff! I posted your Tagora pics here, hope you don't mind, and a Tagora owner asked if the left door mirror was still good... he needs one!

Posted

These are spots of truly Biblical greatness. The R12 is one of my favourite cars, and to see them in forms that Renault had never dared imagine delights me all the more :D Keep them coming before they all disappear. You must surely also be the only A-s membe to have spotted 2 separate Tagoras!

Posted

Romania looks a good place to visit! Nice 131 estate you found there. A rare sight nowadays. I'm lucky enough to own one. Is it just me or does that Tagora look really straight and level and dare I say it not too rusty? I'm sure a valet would work wonders. Let me at it!

Posted

That Tagora would make a great cross-continental Autoshite tat rescue mission. Armed with a 4-cylinder hiab D-series, of course :)

Bit of trial and error reveals the elusive 20 ;) :

Posted Image

Posted

I can give adress and details of the Tagora, it's parked outside a block of flats however so could be a lot of people's. Also, it's the same car as the one I posted on the first page... I did see another one, white, in mint condition, last year, but as I photoed it several security guards rushed out and made me delete the picture - apparently it was outside an embassy and I looked like the typical British spy. Next time I went there it had gone...Don't worry, there's a fair few more to come! But untul then, www.rabla.info is an amazing place to visit - some serious shite there, rotting away on the streets of Bucharest

Posted

Cheers, I'll pass it on - if he really wants to pursue it I'll tell him to sign up here, he's got a nice collection of 'shite (in good condition to be fair!).

Posted

I saw a shabby orangey-gold tagora in Bucharest a couple opf years ago. I also snapped some sort of interesting 4wd thing, which provoked a security guard to rush out and make me delete the pic!

Posted

Good dedication! I did toy with the idea of trying to explain to him the rarity and interestingness of a mint white Tagora, but decided agasint it at the last moment.

Gloriously tired Merc:

Next to this Dacia...

...was this R18

Spot the multitude of shite

Nice Renault

Nicer FiatPosted Image

This is pretty top trums - not a Merc but an Iran-built Irannational. In the 70s the Romanian Tourism Office imprted lots of their licence-built Merc coaches and minibuses, none of this type though.

Yet more shots of the GAX 69 which still tools around

Nice Mazda

Posted Image

Granny estate was a stunner

Posted Image

Newish Volga on Kishinev plates, as a fellow owenr I was exceptionally pleased to see this (while preferring my far earlier one)

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

A very nice and very tired Mosky still going strong. This demanded lots of photos:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Decent Audi 80. Until recently Romania was full of these and even now there's some used as taxis:

Posted Image

Finally, a pleasing duet of absolute shite:

Posted Image

Posted

Fab Mosky, and I can't help myself... the red 5-door's a Camry.

Posted

Yup, there's a pic of it earlier on. Cheers to those who like the pictures btw!

More cack:

Dacia - but with headlamps of something different - an Oltcit (Later they made their own version which was a lot squarer, there's one a few pics down). This was quite fashionable in the late 80s with Communist Oartty members trying to prove they had a "different" Dacia from everybody else...

Posted Image

Pick-up, circa 1993, with retro-fitted headlamps from the 70s. Why whould you do this?

Posted Image

Dacia Sport with a bigger boot welded on. Again, silly, frankly.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Land Rover-Fiat bastard son?

Posted Image

King Cab, Romanian style. They were making these till 2000....

Posted Image

Buses, Romanian style...

Posted Image

Nice trio of shit

Posted Image

This Merc, however, was fabulous - good private plate, too

Posted Image

ALFA!!!!!!! Almost my spot of the day

Posted Image

TV ambulance, c. 1980

Posted Image

Incredibly well-kept Trabant, old giffer lokes to drive round evry day in this

Posted Image

Wartburg Tourist

Posted Image

Excellent Honda, a real beaut in this condition - nice quad lights too

Posted Image

And my spot of the day. 1964ish Opel Rekord Olympia. There is so much so right on this, from the faded 2-tone paint, to the missing hubcaps, to the building behind it, to the wonky numberplate, to the unoriginal rear lights (off later Rekord).... I lked this a lot.

Once more a great update... that Accord is giving me bad thoughts.

Posted

Is that a Fiat Campagnola? They're a bit more advanced than a Land Rover IIRC, with independent suspension all round.Great spots as ever! :D
