What car names should they bring back

The BMW numbering system makes perfect sense. No it really does. Some cars, with different numbers, have the same swept volume. That is all. I know it's upsetting if you're "OMG IYVE GOTT ORTISM SPEKTRUM ASPURGERS". If you haven't then allow me to explain.

The numbers relate to the equivalent performance generated by the state of engine tune. The 316 has a 1.8. This is because manufacturing a completely different engine, ie an actual 1.6, would be expensive. Thus they de-tune the 1.8. This gives an advantage in terms of torque but keeps power lower for insurance purposes. The 318, the model up, has the same engine in a higher state of tune. The 318 iS (FUTURE'Z CAR IZ ORSUMM AND HAZ 16 V) is again upgraded to include a 16 valve, high performance head and alloy construction.

The 323 is a de-tuned 325. This again follows the same principles.

The 525e had the 2.7 US market six. This was larger than the 525i but tuned for economy. The engine generated vast torque; in order to turn slowly with a high top gear. Thus reducing petrol input. They did not call it a 527 as doing so would indicate a performance adavantage over the 525. There wasn't one so they didn't do it.

The 745 turbo was so called as it was accepted, in those heady days, that the addition of a compressor would increase the performance to that of a 4.5 litre car.

The 325, 330 and 335 diesels of modern times are the same. The first two use the single turbo six in low and high tune respectively. The 335 has a twin turbo setup; thus is more powerful and merits a higher number.

It's easy.

As for names that should be brought back. I don't think that there are many. Modern cars, a lot anyway, simply do not deserve the great monikers of the past. A DeTomaso Pantera with flappy paddles and race-mode traction control. No thanks. A "new" Capri with a Duratorque TDci. A Saab (Vauxhall) powered Eldorado Coupe De Ville?

The names that could, potentially, be brought back are those of ordinary cars that now have meaningless ones. I wouldn't mind a new Sunny, Bluebird or Tercel. The Honda City is surely due a come-back.

More aircraft related.

Phantom.

Corsair. (Although this is also boat related, as is Corvette)

Or even (The) Phantom Corsair:

And the Gaylord, just because!

On the same theme, how about the Mitsubishi Zero? Ideal for some new low emission thingy :)

A quick google shows nothing, but I'm pretty sure they actually did a Colt Zero special edition in Japan

They did a "zero" Lancer Evolution too. http://www.fantasycars.com/sedans/HTML/ ... _zero.html

Zero appears alot in Japanese culture. I think it has a general ethos of "elite" though not a literal translation.

...... a King Tiger that had been dragged from a river bed.....

Jeez, they're like 120 ton aren't they ?

The correct name for the plane would be "Navy Type 0 Carrier Fighter" or Allied codename "Zeke". The zero comes from the fact it was introduced in 1940, or the year 2600 in the Imperial Calendar

...), lots of old Nazi and Soviet aircraft engines and a King Tiger that had been dragged from a river bed.

Actually, that's a common mistranslation... the German "Königstiger" translates as Bengal Tiger
