I know this has been covered before, but just wondering what the best options would be to do the following...

I now have two vehicles, The Volvo S70, and the Renault Master. I'm looking to insure them both, one as my daily and the other as a Campervan, quotes received so far have been around £900.00 for the Volvo, and £300.00 for the Renault. Both fully comp, as it's coming in cheaper that TPF&T. Does anyone know if there is a cheaper way of insuring them, maybe a fleet policy, multicar (most seem to be for cars only though) or maybe a traders policy. I would have thought that the last option would be best, but do I need to set up a soletraders company to be eligable for one? Or can I just blag that I'm a mechanic part time?

All advice greatfully received!

I use primo plc in Sarfend

they cover a motorhome, scooter, four cars, plus classics

My trader's policy doesn't formally require you to incorporate, but they may ask for 'proof of trading' in the event of a claim, however they again don't ask for a minimum turnover/number of cars traded...I'd just make sure to keep records of whatever cars and parts you buy and sell.

Interesting, who's that with? And what do you pay a year on average?

Frank Pickles for the motorhome, based in Otley, ours is about £200 for the year.

I've only had it for a month or so- the underwriter's Tradewise and the broker is Peacock Insurance Services. The latter have been really helpful- they were happy to e-mail me the PDF of the entire policy booklet before I went ahead with buying it, had no problems with e-mail scans of my NCD proof and driving licence and generally appear to be worlds apart from the call centre drones ("we don't have e-mail access" FTW!) you get with a consumer policy.

They do take NCD into account, so I'm paying £565 TPFT (with a limit of 5k per vehicle on theft/fire claims) which is a RESULT! The only thing I didn't like was that the cancellation terms border on the ludicrous- IIRC, you won't get anything back if you cancel after 4 months!

That sounds pretty good. I've given them a call, just waiting for them to call me back. Cheers!

No probs!

Another thing to be aware of is that your NCD from the trader's policy will most likely be unacceptable for a consumer policy, so, if you think you may need to revert to an individual policy in the future, you may want to think about buying a consumer policy every couple of years and cancelling it within the cooling off period just to keep the NCD fresh.

Right, have shopped around,

Best is: Separate policies

£505 - Volvo

£285 - Renault

= £790 Fully comp

or

Traders = £900 Fully comp (+much flexibility)

hmmmm

Did you ask the trade insurers about the TPFT price? In my case, it made a massive difference (over 30%).

Yes, £750 TPF&T

hmm, for some reason they seem to have given you a bit less off than they'd quoted me. Assuming that the camper is indeed worth something, I guess it may make sense to go for the fully comp option.

Lux; I think it's what star sign + lunar eclipse etc etc...

The problem for me is one will be my home for the next six months.

So, going for this

Thats actually the first time I have seem the Renault despite it being a stones throw away from my house. It looks well nice. What made them get shot of it, they must have been mad.

Out of interest, if you are going to be taking that away to live in why are you insuring the Volvo? Is the Renault on a classic policy?

I cant really help but you can have this photoshopped picture of Anthea Turner with a snake if you want.

I would too - you can't turn your nose up at a free Renault Master camper.

You might be seeing a lot more of it M. Imp - MOT test on Friday.....

It got passed on as it was too big, heavy and unreliable, and they've bought another van, so it became surplus to requirements. The idea is to install this on the campsite, where it won't need to move until October, and use the Volvo as my car.

My trader's policy has a specific exclusion for camper vans, so worth checking that before you fork out the readies.

Back to insurance for a moment...

More than managed good price for Scirocco - £150

So I thought I'd give them a whirl with the 944 - current quote - AVIVA £250

Indian* fucking call centre...

'and we'll just have to credit check you before we can proceed with a quote, this won't affect your credit rating is that OK?'

"noo it's not, you can see that I manage to pay the Scirocco monthly. If I take out your insurance you can credit check me then, but not before"

The upshot was, they wouldn't quote without credit checking me, so I told the twat to "fuck off"

Rather helpfully he then put his boss on, who again, trotted out the company line

& I told him to fuck off as well.

Went on Confused

As the quote screen eventually appeared, the phone rang

and it was the AA who'd come up top at £249 because they'd quoted with double the excess I'd asked for.

So I told him to fuck off as well.

I've had a cracking day so far.

I will always recommend Safeguard in Leeds for Camper Van insurance, there are 6 Yorkshire lasses in that office and it's,

"Hello it's Dave & my post code is XX74 2XX"

& they've got you & they're helpful, they mirror your NCD for the van & the cover for the contents of the van is £3000

*some of my best friends are Indian, I'm not racist, I'd just like the call centres to be in the correct country.
