O/T (slightly) Tell me about shiny new luxo cars

V70 D5 or 530d. Boring, but real world sensible. A 09 plate from a dealer - pay over the odds, get a nice ironed smooth 50k miler with nice orthodaedic chairs and it's one less thing to worry about when there appears to be a lot of other things to worry about.

Modern Volvo V70 is fine, no horror stories ASFAIK. Either that or a Mondeo which is just as big.

I'm not sure if anybody's mentioned it yet, but all new cars are overly complicated mass market appliances.

Thats all very well, but the OP's dad is not going to want a Morris Traveller or 1978 Volvo 245DL, he wants something new(ish) without a tendency to self destruct, what's wrong with that?

I'm not that well up on the newest cars but i do think the Volvo V50 Estate seems a good bet, good looking, well built and reliable and a image which would fit in well down the golf club.

Of course It depends on his budget.

I wouldn't rule out a Mondeo.

Actually I think the Mondeo won the tow car of the year awards at some point. I have noticed quite a few of them out and about towing some pretty big caravans.

Have they thought of getting a tiny Fiat or something and A framing behind their motorhome?

For me it would have to be a Subaru legacy or outback.... followed by perhaps a volvo of somekind, one with a few miles under its belt so any biggies had happened....

Another huge vote for the Superb Estate here. He'd be a fool to NOT go and at least sit in one, or go for a drive. Seriously, a million cabbies can't possibly be wring.... They do a huge dead cow spec 4x4 model aswell.

It should be a Mercedes, but not a C-Class (which isn't a big car at all).

E-Class, saloon or estate.

Every single E-Class in various incantations from 1953 onwards have all been first rate motor cars, with the exception of the W210 (1995 - 2002) which in itself isn't a bad car but suffers from rust problems. If he buys an E-Class estate preferably diesel where the original owner has shelled out a fortune on options including leather I will guarantee he will be as happy as a schwein in scheiss....

I sold my motorhome with the intention of buying a car and caravan and absolutely wanted a BMW 5 series. After being seriously disappointed with the 5 series and to a far lesser extent by the Audi A6 I turned to Mercedes after ruling them out originally due to running costs etc. I use an independent with labour costs half the price of MB and 11 months after buying mine I am as happy as the day I bought it. I expect it to last me for some years yet !.

One of these should tow a caravan with ease*...

Well, at least it's not Vectra based. You have to give it that.

*Whilst, admittedly, using as much fuel as Thunderbird 2

If they're spending proper money, the E class Mercs are hard to beat.

I know someone who's had four E classes in the last 10 years, done 200k in each of them and not once had to do anything other than routine servicing, tyres and brake pads. They've all been very good on fuel and they've progressively got faster and more economical.

Not the most involving car to drive but they've all been bloody good.

Likewise, we've got some in work and they never need anything other than routine servicing, and they're all as good as new after three years and 60,000 reasonably hard miles.

In truth, they're no worse build quality wise than the old, fabled W124. The bits that matter are as good as ever, but there are more little fiddly trim bits than before as there are more things to cover. W124s only took a little bit longer to get rusty. The 95-98 E class was an unfortunate anomaly of the type that only accountants could manage. Things are better now.

Much appreciated. Having looked at the latest V70, I have to say, they look fucking lovely to my eyes. I'll work on him on that or an e classe, and look forward to many happy years of not being able to have a go in it.
