305 Questions (not that many)

Ha!

I'm going to get proper flamed for this, but I wanted to ask the great and the good on this forum some 305 questions, seeing as I won that magnificent pile of rammle on eBay yesterday.

Anyway:

1. I would like to lower it, slightly. I have a spare set of 20 mm 205 lowering springs for some reason and wondered if they would fit. Does the 205 have anything in common with the 305 at all? I imagine there would be torsion bars at the back which would go down a click or two. But no more - don't worry I haven't lost it. I do know the stud pattern is the same at 4 x 108. Sharing a unit with SCTSH_ANDY means that there are a large number of fit Pug rims available to try, including one nine Speedlines, Mi16s and Harriers. I think a set of the former would look GR9 on it. HALIFX_MARK also has some old school Ford wheels available but will the centre bore be too small?

2. I was also going to fit some continental bulbs like those on Pete-M's 604 for that 'Gitanes and merde' style I reckon I can pull off if I don't shave for a week.

3. I am binning the BNP plates and fitting some repli-Sercks from Framptons.

4. Does anyone know of a set of 305 GTX wheels anywhere? Got my eye on some BX 16v boots as well, but I can't go nuts because this is supposed to be a cheap bit of fun.

PLEASE NOTE: I am not about to cut the springs and \ or matt black, stickerbomb it or turn up at shows with the (built in) roof rack full of tat*

*Unless I need to go to the tip. We're still friends, right?

BUILT, NOT BOUGHT.

I don think these things have the 'usual' twin-torsion-bar PSA suspension arrangement at the back, I think they are from before that was invented. That said, I dont know what arrangement it actually is. I think its some sort of coil spring set up.

I thought 305 rear suspension was very similar to the 205 (and all the other FWD Pugs of that age).

The Ford wheel will probably fit but the offset is a mile out and will probably look, handle and wear tyres BAD!

Mi16 wheels get my vote!

My big book of boring facts reckons the 305 has a coil rear end, so Mr Bol's on the money.

IIRC it's a rather complicated set-up involving horizontal coil springs.

I would be reluctant to alter the suspension or put different wheels on, these cars have phenomenal roadholding in standard form. I had a slight problem with the (standard) tyres rubbing on the inner wheelarch on my van, I don't think there's much room for wider wheels anyway.

305 rear ends are indeed a somewhat slightly horizontal independent-ish unit, with a coil over set-up involved. I recall being somewhat befuddled trying to replace a spring on a Van after MOT failure. Leave it be at the rear... I do have 4 (maybe 5 thinking about it) Picasso rims.... 15" 4 bolt, black steels. Yours for nowt. (Look similar to the 406 steel rim)

Which reminds me, I still have a set of VX rims for Claypole.... I'd best remind him!

I may have a 305 manual in my collection if it's any use to you, will have a root around in the loft later

I think you'll find that the 305 Estate has different rear suspension from saloons - in order to give it a flat loadspace - so the springs are probably different.

From what I can work out, this estate I've b[r]ought is a collision course of old school and nascent PSA technology that wouldn't change much over the next 15 years of so. The engine, from what I can see, is the one six TU that was still doing service in the 206 and was only phased out for the 207 because it's a lardy bastard. I also appear to have a BE1\5 gearbox. No idea what the SL5 spec denotes though.

The one cutaway of a saloon I can find does indeed depict coils almost rammed up the rear turrets. I can't imagine the estate being much different from the van's. Horizontal coil units sound about right. The front end looks similar to a 205s.

I'd love some HBOLage please. Lemme know the costs involved.

*sneaks away quietly, hoping no one will notice*

I've found that the place I bought it from has their own website, selling some top quality chods. And my car was originally £595. And it apparently has the same 94 brake engine as the 305 GT - according to my arse grasp of French, combining quite a 'powerful' engine with a really plebby trim level - from the GR

PHAKT! You can fit a fishtank sideways in the rear of a 305 estate and drive over a bumpy road without spilling any water!

What about a 309 rear beam? :D

OMFGBUBBLE!

The 305 estate marked the debut of the now standard PSA Peugeot Citroen rear suspension layout. This is fully independent using horizontal coil springs and trailing arms. It is very compact and was designed to minimise suspension intrusion into the wide flat loadspace, while providing excellent ride and handling. This was later developed (in other Peugeots) to use torsion bars and it was a key ingredient of the success of the Peugeot 205. The compression ratio was 9:2:1.

Not really much to add other than FWIW I think it'd look pretty good lowered a touch.

Get it done!

It could work but the metal might scratch the glass.

I agree, it would look fashionable

& it would ride like jiggly bouncy uncomfortable shit

but ultimately it would take the Safeway Parabolica almost a 100th second

faster than the bloke behind who probably still has his own teeth

your car / your choice

I hate lowered crap.

If was really that much better for a tenner,

Why didn't Peugeot do it that low?

Well, it was an idea I had. I have them sometimes. I'm talking about lowering it by 20 mm. 20 mm, because that's what I have [lowering springs] in my unit. I'm not about to lop coils off the damn thing.

From what I've read, it might not be practical to do so anyway. The front end appears similar to a 205 but the rear is a completely different ball game. I might just change the wheels & tyres, because those trims are rather horrid. Honestly, I'm not going to butcher it, you can ask any of the folks on here who know me personally. Can you imagine what would have happened if one of the Retro Rides wannabe - crew had got hold of it? It would be running stupid camber and dragging its arse along the speed bumps by now.

Wat said "Honestly, I'm not going to butcher it, you can ask any of the folks on here who know me personally.".

Didn't you tell me that you were going to turn your Amazon into a Mercury Coupe lookalike? (Only joking!)

Leave it stock. It's not worth the trouble when it looks ok as it is.

Lower it 8-10mm, its a compromise innit.

Dunno Bol. seems risky. :|

Somewhere in the deep fathoms of my brochure collection i do have the leaflet for the S5 estate....as you do say it was a mix of the gt drive line,gr trim but with the gt spec steering wheel, and featuring the roof bars of the gtx model, only available in the metallic red if i can recall. It was a springtime Special edition issued around May 1985.I can always remember seeing one in the peugeot talbot dealership in Torquay on holiday whilst waiting for my dad to order a replacement boot key for the one that had snapped in the lock of his Alpine. Engine should be the 1580 xu unit then also common to the Citroen bx trs petrols featuring a twin choke webber carb and be1 5 speed gearbox. :D

Peugeot, admittedly, were one of the best out there for getting the ride/handling compromise spot on.

However, your post leads me to say just one thing...

SLAM IT, WAT. 60mm DROP!

When you get it, see how easy it is to lower, if it's not difficult then give it a go. You can always swap back later if you don't like it. My Ginetta was a different heights while I figured out the best level for looking good and clearing speedbumps.

Or you can sell the 205 springs on ebay and spend the money on a nice pineapple to put on the roofrack :D

305s are quite impressive off road, if anything you should raise the suspension. Maybe see if Dangel have any bits kicking about off their 305 4x4 prototypes.

Wat, make sure you don't get any fat birds to sit in the back or it might lower the car too much. No dead bodies either in case you end up "beached" on a speedbump while on your way to dispose of them.

Or do what Garethj suggests.
