Rovershite!

So, my mate Davy's daughter recently passed her test, and he's been looking to get her a wee car. As the resident "mate who knows about cars", I've gone with them to look at various things:

973cc 3 pot litre Corsa - chavvy green, no power, generally awful.

954cc Spaxo - she liked it, but it was SALTY, and a bit rough

1124cc 106 - shite, and falling to bits, full of grot and wag

Davy was out and about yesterday, and saw a car for sale, and phoned me to ask my advice. As it wasn't too far away, I arranged to meet him after he'd picked up his daughter, and have a look at it.

"THAT'S IT DAD!" "I LOVE IT!!" cried the daughter upon seeing the car.

Here it is

£200, MOT and tax until the end of July. The seller looked a bit bemused (but was friendly enough) when we turned up. Davy in the brand new E Class, myself in the 911. One or two scrapyard bits are needed (peanuts money) and a damn good clean are all that is required. It's coming to me for fettling and to make sure it's safe etc., but if I say so myself, there ai't much I don't know about these cars.

LOVE IT! Can't wait to get stuck in!!! :D:D:D

Needs a bit of tweaking (i.e., a fucking good clean) and we've sourced various bits of trim from our tame scrappy for a score. I reckon a day with the power washer and power polisher will have this looking the business

The engine bay looks clean and that battery looks new. The rear tyres look OK, as well! £200 soinds very fair! It ticks all the boxes for a first-time driver!

The girl clearly has taste.

Have you got a 911?

Not like you've ever mentioned it before*

AYE. Want a PIC*?

Yep, Sir Boll, 8 valver. Nice and torquey at the bottom end of the rev range. I am going to give it the full power washer/power polisher treatment, and check the brakes etc. It's a whole lot of car for the price of a decent mobile phone. The stereo in it is worth half the purchase price.

The Goof will be evicted from the garage while I give this my full attention. Old Rovers are made of WIN.

Amazede how cheap these things are. As everyone knows it will have OMG HEADGASKIT FAILURE but still aren't going to lose much money

Posted

Bit of a result there methinks, can't go wrong at that sort of money. Nice to see one that hasn't got stuffed rear quarters too (assuming the passenger side is as good as the o/side) as most of the ones I've seen are covered in rust and dents. Probably a blind spot or something.

It's amazingly straight Billy, gonna attack it with the polisher and tyre paint. £200 is true Autoshite. I am just gonna love getting stuck in to it!

Challenge you to a shine off competition, Rover Vs Astra? :D

What's the 211 like to drive?

I'm quite fond of R3 200s, my 220Di was a laugh to drive. GR11 combination of hot hatch performance and Perkins Prima soundtrack.

How many 211s were ever sold, does anyone know? The only time I ever seriously considered a brand new car was when James Edwards were offering them at something like £25.00 deposit and £25.00 a week with nothing more to pay at the end. Fairly (very) dismal spec obviously but a good deal at the time.

Nice car, I do like these bubble 200s, driven a few and they comfortable and a nice place to be. Mind I've never driven a 211 before, they do seem pretty rare.

Posted

They are nice. I've driven a couple of CVT ones. The BRMs are stupidly cheap for the fun they offer - and that pimp-tastic interior. I can easily see me ending up with one.

One annoyance is the sunroof seal. Often fails causing lots of noise at speed. Can't really argue for £200 though!

These are starting to grow on me as a cheap method of transportation, I wouldn't kick a streetwise or BRM out of bed but i still wouldn't fancy a 211i, i bet these must be a miserable drive.

Posted

Is this a 211 then? If so you should call it the two-eleven (as in nine-eleven)

It's a bit too early to be a 211, it's a 214 8V, I was just being a MNG.

The statistics aren't that appalling.

I imagine it's quite a torquey and willing wee engine, like all K series variants.

The performance figures are on a par with my Golf diesel, quite acceptable.

Rover 200 insurance groups are quite high, I guess they hadn't sussed out the stupid gimmicky security kit they needed to fit to their cars to bring the ratings down.

Ultimately insurance groups mean bugger all though, especially at this end of the market. They just make up prices on a whim based on engine size, the colour of your hair, testicle volume, star sign, etc.

The 1.1 multipoint injection (in this) isn't too bad, as the car isn't that heavy, not a lot more than a Metro. It's no ball of fire, but surprisingly willing and low-end torque is better than my own 1.6 K Series 25. With my car you need to hit the 4000 RPM before it comes alive, with this, the shove comes around 1800RPM and goes away until you hit the high threes. Judicious rowing with the gear lever just to make sure you're in the right gear is important. However, it'll be good on fuel, and it doesn't cost a fortune to insure. I will also be able to look after it, as I know these cars inside out.

£200! Ace.

My wife has got a 220Sdi and it's a great little car!

Still doesn't appeal to me Len, 59 bhp 0-60 in 15 secs and to top it off it's an insurance group 7, The same as a 1.9TDI Octavia or a Subaru Impreza!

It is by no means a weapon, Mike, but it's quicker than that. In a way, it reminds me of my Nova SR, except the Rover isn't shit. The funny thing is, the girl knows I have a spare 1.8K with an Eaton M45 'charger. The exuberance of youth always wants mor POWERRR, but I don't think it is a good idea!

Top work for £200 - is the MOT more difficult over there? If so, even more of a bargain.

A former workmate of mine was given a 5 door 211 off his dad and was painted beige - surely the ultimate Autoshite spec? He was a great bloke and certainly not a bullshitter so I beleived him when he said that it was so quiet when on the motorway (his first car being a brown Maestro) that he hadn't noticed he'd got it up to 100mph (indicated). Are their speedos notoriously optimistic or something?

Posted

The speedo on my 25 reads 44 when shatnav says 40, so, by that measure, an indicated 100 would be 90/91 true.

The Google maps on my BlackBerry doesn't track properly, so when you complete a journey, it'll give you an average speed for a trip of something like 190MPH.
