"Classic" Vs old banger.

I spent most of today blatting around Norf Whales. Some class old stuff out. Saw three ancient ('30s?) Austins pissing about near Bodelwyddan?, a cloth cap in a mint Stag (who wasn't impressed with being easily overtaken on a twisty pass by a certain Scouse geezer in an Alhambra diseasel), about ten TVRs in Llanberis, few old VWs, a bunch of nutters in XK120s who were properly having a good laugh, Corvette and AC Cobra playing near Capel Curig and a late '70s Coke bottle Corvette on the A55.

None of them were 'old bangers', and the Stag didn't appear to blow up as I passed it, so it was a good day for folks in old cars.

I've just taken a look at the programme for the 1991 Chasewater Transport Show; cars were divided into two classes. pre and post 1959, so 32 years old seems to have been a bit of a watershed in those days, but there were a few 1970s car there. I was actually there on a club stand in what was then a 15 year old Saab 96, but no-one questioned its classic status.

Today's show at the same place was a lot larger and there were a lot of newer cars especially on club stands, Jaguar XK8s and S-types and Nissan GTRs for example. So it looks as if no matter what the great unwashed public think, car enthusiasts were and still are a bit more open-minded when it comes to what is in and what is not.

As it was D.I.D, I got my A35 out of the garage and took it for a nice long run, and spotted loads of stuff. I waved at and got waved back by the drivers of: Rover 14, MGA, Ford Popular, Ford V8 Pilot, P5B and a lovely brown Wedge Princess. Ignored and got ignored by the drivers of: two Sherpa DHC's, Stag, E-Type and a MK1 Escort with huge OSF banner on the windscreen, huge forest arches and driven by a skinhead with tattoos. Maybe it's some kind of inverted snobbery?

Is it true to say that even up to the 1970's, far less people owned a car? So therefore, if you had a £50 Anglia at the time, it was quite a privelage, whereas nowadays cars are much more disposable?

I dont know, just surmising I suppose.

At least most people agree, who cares if its 'classic' or not.

Given enough time, and when a car goes from commonplace to rare, we will all want one. Especially if its a dismal old hack :)

Last year when I owned a Renner 18 I took it to Maxey classic car show. The woman on the gate said "show cars that way" so I trundled along to the show area. Some jobsworth in a hi-viz vest was marshaling and started shouting towards me.He seemed to think I should have parked in the car park.As I approached I manually wound the window down and said "yes it's an old banger but when was the last time you saw a chrome bumper Renault 18 ?" The car was 28 years old and to me not a classic but very rare and interesting though.Seemed an odd way to go about things when there was a Ford Orion and a '95 Escort with Mexico badges down the side in the car show area.

Seeing all those old cars and bikes driving about today made me smile. There was quite a variety on the A47 and I wondered if there was a show on
