OK how's about this one?

Renault found out that by only using 3 wheelnuts on each wheel they saved 4x wheelnuts in each car , multiplied by the millions they made they saved over a million francs per year? Citroen and Peugeot cottoned on and followed suit - it only ended when more stressed alloys made it impossible.

Well that isn't really a myth as simple economics. Like the dude who worked for a airline and deleted two olives from the on-board salad and saved preciesly one shitzillion dollars.

Under project drive MGR deleted the fucking plastic cap that went over the lower seatbelt mounting bolt to save cash, so I can see the rationale.

Hmmmm. A nice thread dredge. Can't be bothered to check whether this myth has already been mentioned but:

The following 'improvements' will DEFINITELY make your Land Rover/4x4 better off-road:

LOTS of chequer-plate

A row of at least six spot lights above the windscreen (Why does EVERYONE do this? I must be the only person who's REMOVED a set of these stupid lights from my 90 - they weren't even wired up!)

Moving the spare wheel to the top of the roof (yeah, always good to move mass higher up)

Fitting the biggest wheels you can find (preferably ones that then catch on several sections of bodywork)

Fitting a ONE LIFE LIVE IT sticker.

I've seen some amusing alternatives eg: One Wife - LIVID! One Wife - Leave it- One Life SECURITY etc etc.

OY... that's called patina that is...

Yeah I know, but it gets a bite every time

Anyway back on topic.....

If you swop the crank on a 1.6Gti 205 for a 1.9 crank, you get a 1.9 engine with 1.6 identity for insurance purposes. It's true. Bloke in the pub said.

For many years the chap who put the handbrake warning light into Morgans put it in upside down as he thought it was a picture of a handbrake rather than an explanation mark. Dis is a true story Tim

Everyone selling a Mk3 Astra diesel says it has the Isuzu engine despite the fact many were the GM slow blow lumps.

Here's a distinctly uninteresting fact for you though: the engine in the Mk3 Astra 2.0 SRi was a unique one and made from various parts of different 2.0 8V engines.

You'll thank me for that one day. Or possibly not.

^Ah!

Probably not heard before, but one to tell when you are selling your flame pink Astra to a 19 year old lad for £600 quid.

The Astra VXR has the exhaust tail pipe in the middle because - the Z20LEH engine was not durability tested for weighted towing, so this voided out the possibility of a towbar.

The prototype, below, had two exhaust pipes:
