HillmanImp Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 I have just started work on the DAF as I want to get it off my drive and back to the garage where it belongs. It needs a bit of loving in places but is generally okay. However I have run out of metal. I bought a huge sheet about 6 years ago from a place in York and it ran out about 3 months ago after I had used the whole thing replacing most of the Imp. Now I need to get some more but dont know what I want. Last time I just asked for some metal that people use for welding cars and they gave me a large sheet and away I went. What sort of steel am I after and does anyone know anywhere nearer Leeds than York where I can get some?
autofive Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 get yourself down to your local tip with your tin snips
HillmanImp Posted April 3, 2011 Author Posted April 3, 2011 I tried using a fridge a few years back but the metal was crap. Are washing machines better? TBH I would prefer to just buy a sheet like I did last time with no paint on it etc.
Rusty Pelican Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Local scrappys , bonnets , boots and roofs , ive used S/H steel like this for years , a bit more prep work but the correct stuff and cheap , pick a 60s car thats not Vauxhall for really good stuff , 60s Imps have fab steel.

Thats a good idea. Will give it a go. Ta.
meggersdog Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Try a paint & panel suppliers to the trade in your area.I use Granville supplies here and they stock 3 x 4 feet sheets or strips upto 3 inches with or without a lip on one edge. The last sheet steel I bought was about 7 quid.
Vin Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 As has been said above - I would try and find an old bonnet/roof/doorskin. If you'd rather have new clean stuff, I used to get angle iron from a 'metal supermarket' place near M621/IKEA junction. They'll probably have what you want.
Bren Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Try any local fab / engineering shops - they may give you some offcuts for nothing.
mattblack Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Electrical trunking is GR8 4 CHASSIS + OUTRIGGERS
M'coli Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 If you're stuck I've got some - pop over of an evening.
HillmanImp Posted April 3, 2011 Author Posted April 3, 2011 The chap across the road who owns that Mk 2 Cortina Estate I put on the news24 thread the other week, has said he will try to get me some from work. Ta for the offer M'coli, but I am going to need a fair bit, as have small bits on the DAF to do but then need to do the GT6 and then my mates Toyota which will probably use a fair bit so think I need to stock up.
M'coli Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Sure, no probs. I know you probably need loads, but if you need some to get you by, give me a shout.
Station Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Use an Astra mk3 bonnet. It's completely flat, only slightly curved. £10
swesson Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Have a look at this bloke. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sheet-Metal-Mild- ... 3f07ecc8cc He does thicker gauge also.
michael1703 Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 car sheet metal is 0.9mm, your daf might be a wee bit thinner last sheet i bought was 0.9mm 8ftx4ft and that was about £30
scooters Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 I'd be surprised - although they are small cars Dafs are built like tanks - no paper thin PSA stuff here - very similar in metal grade to volvos - you can see Daf styling in the volvo 240s especially round the indestructibility of them. No, dafs are made of serious stuff
