Freddie Cunningham Auction

An RIP thread that is actually relevant to Autoshite.

Freddie Cunningham was a lifelong car enthusiast and collector. He died last year and his collection was auctioned off today. L. Hatred and I attended, along with a non-shiter.

Leonard got loads of pictures but he's currently on a train so I'll start the ball rolling. Most of the cars are a bit old, but still shite.

This thing made me think of the Anthill Mob for some reason.

Quality rope work on this one. There were a lot of cars held together by rope.

What is 100MMX? That looks class.

Interesting stuff, albeit under sad circumstances.

Posted

It's 100WMX but I'm afraid I don't know. Leonard had the foresight to turn up with more than £3.70 in his pocket therefore he has a brochure. Failing that I'm sure somebody will know. It's a shame Barratt is out of the loop at the moment.

There is a lot more to come over the next day or two. I have a self-imposed quota of five uploads a day to Flickr and I used two of today's up on a dead bridge and a condom machine.

wow what a collection

the man obviously had the autoshite passion really bad, did they fetch much?

i feel a hankering for a 1948 Jag 1.5 litre on a scimitar chassis

Posted

We left just before lunchtime, by which time they were on Lot 111. There were over 700 lots of assorted tat to get though before they got to the cars

I'm sure the results will appear in the local rag though, when they do I'll report back.

Must have been an interesting day :D

100WMX looks like it was made by a firm that didn't survive long after the war. Lanchester came to mind but a Google hasn't thrown one of them up that looks similar.

Whats that '50s (? coupe look thing at the far left of the second photo?

Posted

I bet he fully intended to restore them all....... one day

Posted

busy day then

i look forward to the price update

about 10 years ago i went to similar auction, some old bod had died and his kids were selling off his collection - the highlight was a 1920's sentinel steam lorry which made stupid money from the crowd of enginemen who then left, taking their pajeros with them, leaving behind about 30 bidders and 50 more lots of mostly rotten morris minors, dead tractors and crawlers. 3rd to last lot was a marina van with a siezed motor which i thought i might get cheap, but some farmer had his eye on it and it ended at 450 quid

edit: just realised it was nearer to 15 years ago than 10 years ago

Don't think it's a Lanchester - the only post war Lanchester that sort of size that I can think of is the 14. It's annoying me though because I know I've seen a photo of one of those before, but I can't for the life of me remember what it is. I initially thought it might be a Delahaye or something similarly exotic, but it doesn't look right for one of those either.

I'd never heard of him, but it is always sad when a collection comes on the market for that reason

It's a Hotchkiss 2050, luxury French barge of the mid 50s. It looks quite restorable, I hope that it gets returned to its former glory.

Edit - 2050 is the model number, 'Anjou' is the style of bodywork

Posted

That's it! Delahaye wasn't as far off as I thought then - they're both luxury French marques that died out shortly after WW2.

It's nearly tomorrow so I've uploaded some more.

Some more traditional shite. Left hooker and leather, is it an 8-32?

Thanks. I'd also noticed it in the list from the auction when looking for the Hotchkiss. Crusty!

It's not apparent in the photo but I think he's quite young, about 16 and came across as an aspiring Mike Brewer.

Posted

Mike Brewer?

He looks more like some sort of mutant result of the coming together of two Norfolk farming brothers. Or a junior PRE-68 IZ CUMMIN racer.

Posted

where had these been kept? Out in the open in a field?

Hope Bickle's not watching, this would be like staring into the face of the ghost of christmas future.

Some epic stuff there, I hope a lot of it gets restored.

Ref the Hotchkiss, my Book of Obscure Oul Shite lists that car as a "Anjou". The car was available as a 4 cyl (2.3 litre) or 6 banger (3.5 litre). Most were equipped with a Cotal Badermatic, while the manual cars had no syncro on first or second. As as heen said, they died off about 1950 as a car maker, and went into partnership with Delage and Delahaye making trucks and military vehicles.

The Hotchkiss is great, it has knobbly tyres at the back. Great for farm hack duties. It's a 2.3 4 cylinder according to the catalogue.

When Leonard lifted the BMW's bonnet a load of cameras appeared from nowhere.

My boss founded the local car club so he knew Mr Cunningham pretty well. Apparently his house was stuffed full of tat, he was into clocks too. He had about 12 cars under his house- I'm not quite sure how that works but I'll find the house and take a picture soon.

There is actually an equally large tat haul only a few miles away from this lot- a church and churchyard full of mostly commercial stuff. These pictures, taken on the street, are just a small sample.

Hey some great pics here, nice one!!! Loving the people shots as well. I would have loved to check that auction out, good job I knew nowt about it!

The SVVC have posted up some prices on their website. http://www.svvc.co.uk/index.php?option= ... &Itemid=84

I found the SVVC's Facebook page and clicked on the auction photo album, hoping to see some new pictures of the day. Some of the photos looked rather familiar, in fact the majority are mine or Leonard's. I think I'll be sending them an email on the subject. I don't mind people using my photographs as long as they a) tell me they are using them and b)credit me.
