Shite crash test

What a pointless waste. What kind of complete fuckwit came up with that idea, thinking it would achieve anything at all?

They did it to mark 50 years of whatever the car safety board is over there. I agree, a complete fucking waste of a beautiful old thing.

Surprised you didn't post this one up Mr Rhythm Thief. I present the amazing disappearing 2CV.

Ow. I'd forgotten about that one ... I remember a theory going around 2CVGB in the early '90s, something along the lines of "2CVs are safe in a rear end shunt because the spare wheel in the boot absorbs the impact". Didn't do much absorbing there, did it? :)

Exactly. Like any of us drive this stuff because we're concerned about car safety ...

I read that Bel Air was knackered, you can see some bits of orange metal coming out of the bottom as well. I'm sure there's loads of these still about, but I can think of better ways of destroying one other than proving how safe the latest Chevrolet Bean Counter heap of shit is.

It wasn't knackered, it was chosen because they knew it'd perform badly in the test. I've posted this before but I hate that video so here I go again:

The 1959 Bel Air had an X shaped chassis, instead of the more usual ladder frame. In an offset collision, there's nothing to reinforce the car body. In addition, the Bel Air has a vast engine bay. Look how much room there is around that V8. The test car had a much narrower inline 6 with even more space.

Result? The 2009 car ploughs through what is essentially an empty sheet metal box. No shit it crumples.

Any 1959 car would have lost this battle, but this model was chosen because it would come off worse and look it. I can see why they did it - they wanted a dramatic video*, but also because strong old cars often come out of accidents looking less damaged than their modern equivalents thanks to the lack of crumple zones, even if the occupants of those cars die.

* Probably also why that truck hit the 2CV first, and not the Granada, in the other clip.

The Polo didn't look like a good place to be, either...:?

There was a crash on one of these traffic cop shows with a real-life version of that 2CV crash. The back car (206 IIRC) fared no better than that 2CV, in fact the lorry driver thought he'd run into the next car along. It wasn't a big lorry either, it was the kind of thing a jobbing builder might drive.

Yeah, seen that. Its pretty grim. Young girl on her first day in a new job. The twunt driving was playing with his mobile phone and tried wriggling out of it. He did not even brake before he hit the poor girl.

In this photo of a car crushed between two trucks, the car is often claimed to be a Smart or other small car but it's actually a Ford Escape SUV.

It's just not good to be hit by lorries.

Yes and the picture is inaccurate too - the car has been pinched on one side and appears to have compressed the whole vehicle - which isn't the case
