Peugeot is planing a low cost brand ( à la Dacia )

Meh, I would be surprised if they did. Seems to be about the worst moment possible to launch a new car brand.

I must be behind the times - I kind of thought Peugeot was quite a low cost brand anyway...

I don't know what the point of Peugeot is anymore. Citroen are making interesting cars again, Peugeot just make the ugly bland versions. Hasn't Dacia proven such a success on the continent it's actually eating into Renault's sales?

its said that these new modern Talbots will be built in....

I think they spelt 'Latrine' wrong on that website URL.

It isn't that long ago that Citroen WAS a low cost brand. At least in the UK

I'm willing to bet that in the late 90's, 75% of their sales were basic Saxos and Xsaras with free insurance and cashback deals priced to compete with Daewoos and Protons.

If they bring back Simca and they are any good then I'd be tempted.

Still waiting for a RHD Logan though. Estate please. SRSLY.

Aren't Peugeot meant to be a low cost brand? The 107/207 and all that.

Is the estate the van-shaped one or is there an actual estate?

This one

What is low cost these days? Can you find any new cars for less than £5000 , if you need a decent specification car it will cost you over £10,000 now. If there is a budget Talbot  it would be doubtful if joseph public would buy it, they like all the toys and gadets, and get in debt with finance.

It is the absolute pefect vehicle for my family/work needs, but we are NOT ALLOWED rhd, instead they give us shit lifestyle soft roaders.

The only thing that comes close to the MCV is the VW Caddy Plus Life thing, but being a VW it is hugely overpriced and doubtless unreliable.

By the time it gets here if it ever does it'll be specced up and not great value.

Every Logan I've seen has been an estate, here's one I completely failed to capture in Glencoe.

Berlingo Multispace, Renault Kangoo or Peugeot Partner?

Peugeot lost the plot somewhere.

They were supposed to be the French "premium" brand. A sort of French Mercedes. The old 504 was just as tough as a Merc.

Renaults and Citroens were cheap, conventional cheap or wacky cheap.

I think that the last tough Peugeot might have been the 305, but it had a bit of an image problem.

The 605 was a total disaster.

Peugeots went all light weight in the 80s with the 205/309/405 which were all flimsy things and then produced the most popular small car in Europe (the 206), but it wasn't a premium product. Maybe the 206 should have been a Citroen.

The 307 was a disaster due to being too complex and fragile.

The 406 was actually not bad but the 407 is rubbish.

The 508 looks like it might be promising though.

I reckon the 205 pretty much saved Peugeot. They were great little cars that seemed to sell well, had a variety of models and weren't bad to drive. For me what ruins Peugeots is that they're so hit and miss: they can be either brilliant or absolutely awful and there are too many of the latter about so it's a gamble buying one.

Had three 206s now one (1.4HDi van) was fantastic and nothing short of amazing on fuel, one (1.4 petrol iirc) was a nice little car and the last one (1.1 I think) was just absolute dog shit.

Had similar experiences with 205s, 405s and 309s and now see Peugeots as something I'd have if I needed a cheap runner but wouldn't bank on keeping one long term.

The 205 was a fantastic small car but Peugeot was no longer a premium brand from then on.

They could have dumped the Visa and put a Citroen badge on the 205.

On the other hand if the 605 had been as good a large car as the 205 was a small one then maybe it would have been a different story.

A more robustly built 405 would have helped too.

Actually maybe the last proper Peugeot was the 505.

All of which are 5 seater, I need 6!

The Fiat Doblo has had a 7 seats option for a while and I think that the Berlingo does as well now.

I'd agree with that, had a 505 gti, which was one the best cars I've ever owned, mosty comfy velour seats of evah.

My FIL's old Doblo had 7 seats, the rear one's are removable, It has to be the Family version to get the extra row though, His was the 1.3 Mutijet Diesel version, which wasn't that bad really if you like driving vehicles with a van type driving position, but it was a bit frugal though, the 1.9 Mutijet Diesel would be my pick for the extra umph.

Anyway, as you were...

Were 405s badly built? I haven't found them to be.

If they do bring back Talbot..make mine a rancho please!!!

I'd kind of assumed from the thread title, that Pug would do what Renault have been doing for years in E.Europe, and selling made-over versions of old models, at knock-down prices. Or the same tactic employed by bargain basement S.E.Asian makers, when selling rehashed Astras and Mazda 121's back to us!

Interesting...

And I too have an impossibly bad pic of a Dacia Logan estate thingy: 'twas on Spanish plates, so presumably the theory about Dacia eating into that market is quite possible.

So does this mean that they are going to dust off some of their Rootes inheritances? Peugeot owns everything Rootes related don't they?... They can go with Brands like : Hillman, Singer, Sunbeam, Humber and slap some: Vogue, Scepter, Hunter, Minx and even Gazelle! I think Arrow was later used in the 80s by Chrysler to re badge some Colts though!.... I know, wishful thinking here, but can't blame me for trying...
