Anyone driven a Proton Gen2?

A breakers near my work has a 2006 Proton Gen II in with some medium bashage around it's chops for not that much money. I always thought the Gen II was quite a fine looking so with my interest piqued I went onto Parkers who describe it as follows."Poor interior quality, dull to drive, high depreciation, sluggish performance, coarse". Sounds perfect shite!

The model in question is the 1.3 packing 90 odd break horsepower although it is the GLS so it has buttons to push inside it.

It's going to need a bumper, headlamp, wing, power steering reservoir, which I should be able to tackle my self. Any one driven one of these things or have a general ideal of parts costs or availability as there's not much on ebay.

Here's a pic

No idea, but I saw the one other day and thought it was quite smart. These almost became Rovers!

My Polish mate bought a new one last year, a 1.6 with factory fitted LPG option in black. The interior plastics are a bit cheap but it looks smart enough and drives quite well, though the engine is a bit noisy. Someone stole his number plates from outside his house last week.

I quite like them, they even have leather interior, If it's cheap enough then i can't see any harm in buying it, It's it a cat "C"?

Drove a 1.6 one some time back - decent handling and a bizarrely excellent gearchange action stood out.

They look really nice in the current range of modern cars, I love the Proton Savvy.

The original MPi with it's 1.5 Magma engine was a really good car.

They own Lotus don't they, I think they get them to breeze over the suspension on some of their cars.

This is why car magazines are such bollocks.

Yes, if subjectively tested against a new Focus, Astra, Golf etc. etc. the Gen 2 isn't that clever. Cabin plastics from tupperware, slightly weird driving position and unrefined engine, but who really gives a toss?

As a cheap runabout and an unexpectedly fun thing to punt around in, you could do a hell of a lot worse. One of the better disposable moderns, if you ask me. And rare enough that you could whip the badges off and nobody would know what it was.

It's cat C. It probably one of those cars that would be really good if someone else had built it. He wants £780 for it but I wouldn't want to pay that for it.

I rather like the modern Protons - their range is what Nissan's ought to be like if they hadn't gone all wanky over the last few years.

They're all quite good looking cars and I reckon should be fairly reliable - I'd certainly give one a go as a runabout. I was having a look at a Satria Neo that was in the garage when I was waiting for MoT the other week. My mechanic reckons they're fine though this particular example had had it share of niggly faults. May have just been an unfortunate example though. Humberside Police run a biggish fleet of Protons so they must be pretty dependable.

That's gotta be alright.

Buy it, hammer it to death, bin it, you'd still get good value.

It's not even like they look particularly spazzy (unlike the original protons, that instantly marked you out as a tight-ass duffer)

That one's got the better engine and similiar mileage. I think I need to price up the bits and see what's what.

There's no point paying over the odds and spending loads of time fixing then finding I could buy a better non tagged car for the same money.

If someone showed joe Focus1.6LX the Savvy and they didn't know it was a Proton they'd probably love it as it's a great looking little car.
