Actually, I'm not, but I might as well be. I am an existing member who has just used automated tools to create a new account. It took 5 minutes, I didn't need to enter the "verification code" the script did it for me.

All I'm trying to say is, if I can do it after about half an hour research in google and some cutting and pasting into a script, it isn't hard for real bots to bypass the user verification page.

The old autoshite needed a mod to verify each new member by hand, the new board uses a capcha system that got cracked 2 years ago. Maybe that's why we are getting so many bots.

At least I went to try and find out why, and it's because we have a fuggin huge "SPAM WELCOME HERE" sign. The first link I posted at the top is a thread with possible solutions in it (not viagra).

I suspected it from the number of spambots we've been getting, and already knew where to look for the shell scripts. Watching spambots and trying to understand how (rather than why) they operate is something of a hobby

 

By the way, every time one gets through it is posting our url into a database as a good target for other bots to follow.

That would be good, but deleting them after they get here is like baling out the boat with a bucket rather than fixing the leak. I'm going to try and find a better verification system than the one we are using - maybe ask each new member a random question about shite cars? Can't see many bots guessing the shape of an allegro steering wheel!

 

In fact, if a mod disables the ability to post links for new members (say <10 posts) that will leave the bots in limbo, unable to make their first post. Ever seen a spam post with no links in it?

I'm sure there's many ways around it, If possible then that verification system would be ideal, many other site used this system, they say something like 2 + 2 = and then you fill in the answer, That would stop the spammers.

Something here might be useful... I like the "verification justification" mod... asks you to submit (in under 250 chars) a reason why you want to join. Admin then read the reason and decide if you are autoshite material, or a spammer.

Thanks for this, I haven't had a spammer in at the Mk1 Mk2 transit forum for months and was about to switch from Admin to auto verification. I won't make the change now!

 

Just how many sign ups a day does this forum get? The only way to keep spammers out is to complete the sign up manually. I always do this, and have had a total of one spammer in nearly 2 years.
