Since when, exactly? Since 25 years ago when you were driving an Anglia? Park that next to a new Focus (the direct equivalent) and see the difference. The spaces aren't smaller, they're still the same Fiat 127-size they have been for nigh on 40 years. Cars have gotten podgy, that's the problem.

I'd put that at 86 or so, due to the 216? rover, and an early 205 and Shogun

 

Looking at the spolier, it looks like a moonraker blue 216 Vitesse, I wish still had both of mine.

 

I think the early ones were the best shape, I never really took to the smaller taillights and bootlid on the mk2. The extra weight of the spoiler on the mk2 was always good for a wack on the head.
