Chevette Auto Saloon

I'm going to look at one for a chum tomorrow, I've never had one and know little about them or their value, are they shit and worthless?

RWD GR8 4 DRFTN!

Saloons handle better than the hatches due to different rear suspension set up. But I guess 1256cc + slusher won't be pushing the handling boundaries... should keep it cheaper mind as decent shuvs make strong money now. I bloody loves them I do.

SIlls, arches, inner wings, rear inner wings, etc.....

Got no experience of them, bar the vague memory of being squeezed in to the tartan loveliness of the back of a blue hatchback a couple of times in the late 80's...

...BUT:

for a girly appraisal... they are cute! I especially like the inny-eyes ones.

It's not my old one is it? CMA 12X I think. It was great fun to drive, not so slow you couldn't use it everyday and pretty good on fuel. You'd be radio not to buy one imho.

Value wise they'll rise slowly but surely. Rot most places, usual favourite inner and outer wings (esp near headlights) and arches.

It's gold and an A reg apparently so not yours Cav! Late one Lou 2 so is it cute enough for you?

Yeah! I like em. I was considering one when the 2cv was for sale (along with many other contenders I confess!) but couldn't find one with an MOT at the time.

Go for it! I can't remember the last time I saw a nice unmolested Chevette. :D

Nothing handles better than a Chevette hatchback.

I'll agree with that. Never driven a saloon, but the only Chevette I have driven is a hatchback and it was an absolute hoot. Viva with the same engine was dullness personified.

All it needs is an Escort Mark 11 body and it would be worth 6 million pounds.

If your chum is into gold Chevette automatics, why isn't he on here where we could worship him as some sort of Shitegod?

Mainly because he's not internet savvy and just getting into shite, he has a 635 and an Alfa 156.

I went to have a look, it had rust bubbles on most panels, small holes in others, the sills had had work & were covered in tar and the paint had faded, the engine needed a good service and the interior was tired, although having said that it was a nice original car. I thought the £500 he required was too much and mates offer wasn't accepted! It was in need of T&T imminently. On the plus side the engine bay and chassis looked good!

£500 seems a bit hopeful based on that description, sounds like a pretty undesirable chevette all told. Lets wait till it appears on the bay, where i'd say it will make about £261.84.

A mate of my dads had a Chevette hatch. He often loaded its roofrack with chod he was carting about. One day he overloaded it with timber and when he got home the roof gutters had bent over the top of the doors. He had to exit through the boot!

£300 was offered, apparently he's been trying to sell it for nearly a year, it needs work but it is charming and I think it was a realistic and almost generous offer

That one did end up on the bay but can't remember how much it made. Looked better on there than the content of this thread suggests, which after all was from someone viewing it! One of those "i'll make it look and sound good on the bay and some other poor victim can deal with the problems as long as it makes it to the nearest petrol station!" type sellers!!

Sad but true, a lot of people think because it's a Chevette it's worth a bundle, but it needs to be in good order to raise sensible cash or they have to take the best offer they get!!

Cheers,

Dave

Another overpriced example has just reappeared on the bay :

This was up for sale a few weeks ago but had no bids, the pics are different this time too. But look closely at the pics (use the enlarge thing on fleabay) and you'll see some stuff that shouldn't be there if it was only restored 18 months ago!! The most obvious is beige carpet which should be green! It's also missing the passenger door mirror (from 1982 on they were a legal requirement though i think you can scrape an MoT as long as it has 2 rear view mirrors of some description) and the seats look very tired for only having been sat in for 29027 miles!!!

Sorry I beg to differ with that. Plenty of post-1982 stuff doesn't have a passenger door mirror. Latest car I've owned that didn't have one was a 1987 2CV! Pretty sure the requirement is just for two mirrors, regardless of where they are (so one inside/outside is fine, but so is two outsides).

In some ways i agree with what you're saying. However, at the same time as passing the law on seat belt wearing (1st Dec 1982 was the day you had to belt up) they passed a law saying that each new car had to have 2 external mirrors, as well as the internal mirror. I suspect this was later relaxed to just 2 mirrors or it could simply be down to interpretation. When the law about dim-dip lighting came in 1986, every new car had to have dim-dip lighting. This seems to have also been relaxed as most new cars from about 1997 on that i know of don't have it.

I do however know that the Chevette in question should have had twin door mirrors so it's definitely missing one!

Posted

My first car, a 1984 Vauxhall Nova 1.2 Swing came as new with only one door mirror on the drivers side and it never failed it's mot for only having one. FACT.

Posted

But it had the internal mirror as well, right? That adds up to 2 mirrors. What i'm trying to say is there was some law passed in 1982 about having at least 2 mirrors and it seems it's open to interpretation. Most manufacturers simply fitted 2 door mirrors to cover their backsides. Without access to the original paperwork on the law i can't be more specific.

Posted

you could be right there, i seem to remember when i worked on cars a customers car failing it's test as it only had one mirror and the interior one had falling off.

I'm sure SOC will clear things up.
